Nsima, I didnt know you trained at Cassio Werneck. When I trained back in 2011, I went to a tournament in Sacramento. Saw one of his black belts (purple at the time) Davin Maxwell compete. He was incredibly talented. Hope hes still training

I agree with more mat time but, “just roll more” is short sided or rather an over simplified statement. As you surmise, “get more mat experience” but, that should be elaborated on more. If you just roll more that comes at a cost to your body given that the layman will take that at face value & try to roll harder and more often. More mat time for conditioning can be a lot of things that will also preserve your joints & those things can be: 1. Fast paced drilling for time 2. Positional rolling 3. Hand fight with take down entries or setting up angles 4. Positional rolling mixed with fast paced drilling 5. High paced flow rolling

@joshuasettlage I train three times a week BJJ. I am 47 years old. I am struggling to find the balance between being overtrained and working outside the gym to be in peak physical condition for BJJ competitions that I try to do 3x a year. It seems like really fine line for dudes my age. There is a reason we don't have a lot professional athletes in their 40s the NFL, or NBA. Recovery is way harder as you approach 50 years old and beyond. What advice would you have to me? I am trying to lift once a week, full body, compound lifts. Just trying to slowly gain strength over time. Trying to be disciplined with my diet and sleep as well. The older you get the less margin you have for error in these areas of life. Do you have any experience working with guys my age who want to be in peak condition for tournaments, but struggle with overtraining. I just hate that feeling of being completely zapped that happens to me sometimes when I show up to class. How much should I realistically expect myself to be able to handle outside or class 3x a week? Thanks for any help you can offer me! Zach

People cut weight in jiu jitsu because there isn't enough weight classes and their most likely in between weight classes so they cut 7-10ibs
