This week we jump right into a more difficult lesson: "How to improve your sitting trot." Many of you have requested this one, so we're happy to show you our tutorial on how to properly sit and position yourself during the trot. Or find a VERY bouncy horse. I learn sitting trot on the bounciest horse I have ever ridden. And I must say it makes sitting trot on all the other horses a lot easier in comparison

if you would look at what her legs are doing. (most of the time) her legs arent just flopping around like noodles, they are giving aids. look at her heels and calves, they are making contact with the horse. the horse might be lazy and need constant pressure/reminder to keep pace, we have all ridden that kind of horse at least once in our lives :P. so she's not riding the sitting trot badly, she's probably riding the sitting trot how she needs to.

Her lower leg is just flopping around, it's not giving cues.

snowbunnycare It’s giving cues, in dressage you should barely see simple cues like that. They’re also allowing the horses suspension to go through both the seat and the ankle.

These aren't cues and this isn't dressage work. She's a wonderful rider but she needs to learn how to keep her legs still and off the horse when it's doing something correctly. Repeatedly, kicking into your horse's sides like that gets you a lazy horse. Not the other way around. Even if she were, you don't kick a horse to go, you slightly increase the pressure with your foot until the horse complies. Again, I'm not hating or insulting anyone. I'm just saying that it's something she should try and fix.

Its_BlueberryMuffin She was giving cues as well as allowing her heels to take the suspension rather than her body. If you watch ANY dressage rider you’ll see their heels move. Rather i’d be slightly or a lot. It depends on the horse. Some horses give more suspension than others.

One of the best bits of advice I can ever give anyone as well is have somone film you riding. It helps massively. I see how tense I look at times and think urgh!😁

Whenever I get bouncy in my sitting trot my trainer makes me ride with no stirrups and no reins on the lounge line, it's really hard but effective!

Tip of the day ... when you take your horses bridle off, first make sure you don't take his teeth out with the bit. Appalling.

Indeed, ouch! :/ With the horses I ride most often with, I usually wait a little while after getting the bridle away from behind the ears. Most horses are smart enough to open their mouth to get rid of the bit, haha

when i first started riding for real, the riding camp taught me how to saddle up and all, but they didnt give clear instructions. apparently, i have done things right form the start :) Now it's just left to master the gallop on big horses since im too big for ponies :) Your videos have helped me alot! :D

Wow we do those exercises at our riding school!!! You can really get a feel for horse! Cantering without reins is always fun, especially trying to stop the horse from going back to the other horses :P

I hate doing sitting trot. Posting might make you more sore afterwards but it hurts my back a lot to be bouncing so much. And my horse has trouble staying in a trot when I am sitting.

Abbey Grace omg I know this used to happen to me all the time! I finally learned how to sit the trot and I hope it helps you! first off it helped me to ride with longer stirrups so I could wrap my legs around the horse to sort of pull myself into the saddle I guess. then sit up straight so that your back doesn't wiggle around which is what caused mine to hurt, I don't know if its the same for you :) I hope this helps, good luck!

I feel you! It hurt my back for awhile too but eventually it got stronger and I was able to hold my back stronger. I’ve always had cue problems in the trot too, riding stirrup-less helped me quite a bit with that.

abbeymakesthings I'd recommand you a little daily workout routine to stretch your back and strengthen your muscles (abs and back). Maybe also work on the flexibilty around the hips, to follow the horse's gait more easily and better absorb the shock. I've been doing it myself to improve my position and it's done wonders. If your back still hurts, you should probably take an appointment to get it checked - maybe a vertebrae moved and needs to be put back in place. O:

my old trainer used to make me do lunge line lessons with no stirrups or reins for months at a time, it was torture but it helped so much

Same!!! I will be just fine without stirrups or bareback but when it comes to with stirrups I bounce, I think its because we use our feet to keep us steady not absorbing the shock. Thats my guess

this really helped, because i have a 4 year old mare called italy and she has a huge trot and she lifts her legs really high up and she hasn't got a very comfortable seat, and this helped a lot with it, because my trainer said that I'm doing much better and i asked my trainer if i could do the lungeing excersise and it helped alot, people out the who want to learn, you should really do this excerises they, really help your seat, xx

one thing u didnt mention is u must keep ur pelvis/hips opened and in neutral. if ur pelvis is tilted forward (hips closed) arch in the back then its going to be very hard to follow ur horses movement. great video!

I'm grateful for how damn patient school horses are every day. I know that I thumped around like a sack of potatoes for about 6 months before I could sit the trot acceptably, it was when my trainer let me use no stirrups. Is anyone else 300% better at sitting the trot with no stirrups? I find it so much easier

i find that sitting trot without stirrups is easier than with stirrups but i tend to pull the reins even if my position is good but these were very useful thanks for the advice

I don't know how people learn riding in other countries, but in Germany we learn that from the beginning on... I've also learned to walk, trot and canter without stirrups pretty fast. I even think riding without stirrups is better and easier; with stirrups, I always tend to pull up my knees. Without stirrups, my legs stay way better on the horse's body and that's also how I learned to actually sit in the saddle and not always putting weight onto the stirrups to make it easier for me.

The only thing I learned in Germany when I was riding is how to do rollkur and make your horse miserable by showing who is boss and continuously kicking, hitting and yanking on the bit. The things you described I learned them in Hungary
