I’ve been having problems with my horse going hollow when doing the walk to tror transition. I will think og this in my next ride. Thank you!

Great, let me know how you get on . If the horse parks out and stops behind you’ll often get hollowing . The moment you cluck to keep them jogging behind and they step up to your contact , they should soften . The transition could go for ten steps while they are figuring it out

Thanks for the post. Please help me to understsnd why rider moves her hands/arms so much?

Any stiffness in the riders trunk( back shoulders hips) will show up in the extremities. So if your legs move around a lot it’s generally coming from your lower back and if your arms move around it’s generally from your shoulders and upper back. The other reason riders arms move around is they don’t have the horse truly moving forward into the contact , they are still pulling back to get the horse round. When this rider works in sitting trot , her hands get better showing she pulls back rather than riding into her hand consistently. Another great exercise for hands that move too much is putting your thumbs together ( I made a video on this recently )

I just love your videos! I do find that I'm missing something here, though: what exactly are the steps your lovely rider is taking to achieve the good walk to trot transitions? When you say, go for piaffe, for bubbling up, what is the rider doing? Added leg? -- and is that both legs coming on? Is there a half halt? Thank you!

Hi Jenni, aw that must be a gap in my explanation. Sorry 😢 To create that piaffe, jogging feeling you need to brace your core to slow the front end, belly button up but still hug the horse to keep the energy behind. I find when I’m teaching a young horse I cluck as I’m asking for the downward transitions to teach him to jog behind a step or two to stop him , jamming on the brakes and parking out behind . The half halt is how you start and try to control the horses energy with your core

Hi. I've been struggling a bit because when I use my leg in the transition, my horse wants to run. What can I do to change that?

If your horse is really sharp on the leg, you could try just a very gentle hug with your legs or a constant cluck during the transition. Your trying to teach the horse to jog behind and be held in front with your core. Can you get your horse to slow down by bracing your oblique muscles( that’s the side muscles in your stomach )?

Could you do a video showing how to help this rider with her hands and what causes it? There are so many core and seat issues that cause symptoms like this or are a result of issues in other place in the rider’s position and balance or incorrect use of their body. I always go back and start looking at the rider’s seat and core and find many issues above and below the seat of the rider come from clack of or weak core and an incorrect seat position or incorrect use and movement in the rider’s seat when moving with the horse.
