How To: Improved SSK

This video is to teach you how to do the “improved slip slip knit” stitch. This stitch is a game changer, because it makes an exact mirror image of your k2tog. Since I have discovered this stitch, I have not found a single place in my knitting where I didn’t prefer this to a standard SSK.

I like the ease of this method and it is neater; however, on the purl row the stitch loosens and I end up with that visible loop sitting on top.

I've been doing a test swatch for all the many ssk improvements on KZbin and so far this one is the best! Since I'm a looser knitter, I have to add a bit of tugging but it looks great. Wish I'd had this as I knit the first 1/2 of my t-shirt top. Well this side will just have to be my front!

Do you think this can be converted to a clean 2 stitch decrease, like k3tog? I’m working a pattern in garter stitch and the k3tog options I’ve tried leave a bumpy line down the middle of the block.

I’m not sure! That’s a good question, I’ll have to try it out and see. I didn’t originate this stitch method, I am just showing it for my followers because I use it in some of my patterns, but I would be interested to see if it could be adapted for a 2 stitch decrease

I think this is the same as slip 1 knit-wise, slip 1 purl-wise, knit both together through the back of the loops.

Agreed! It's not quite the same as ssk. Going through the back leg of the second stitch has the effect of twisting it (slightly clockwise). It looks nice. It isn't quite the mirror of k2tog, as ssk is intended to be. One could do their decreases this way, but then the right-leaning version would be: slip 1 st purl wise, then slip it back to the left needle (twisted slightly counterclockwise from its previous orientation), and then k2tog.
