I was feeling rather down lately with my playing and felt like everything I was doing was stale, bland and all the same. I came across this video and decided to follow it, I then grabbed the backing track and proceeded to spend the next 3 hours practicing with it using your advice, starting with a single string and then adding more. After that I spent the rest of the night watching your videos and playing. You really helped me turn around the negative view I had of my playing and progression and gave me a new enthusiasm as a result! This may not sound like much, but it means a hell of a lot to me. Thanks, Rick!

Probably the most informative thing I've heard/seen/read in 35+ years of hacking on a guitar. FINALLY! Someone that can teach the mental aspects of playing, rather than just another "how to play xxx scale at 180bpm". Subscribed!

You have the best teaching videos EVER and you can explain so good ! I hope you never stop doing this! Greatings from Finland.

Rick, you've explained brilliantly how you developed your style and touch . . . but most of us will just never have the "amount" of God-given gift you have! I practice hard and play very well, but YOU are blessed, and in turn, you're a blessing!!

That intro solo was mind-blowng! You have a great command of the fretboard, and you always seem to land on the right notes no matter where you are. I know I have a long way to go before my improvisation skills are as good as yours.

If I ever get to call myself a real guitar player someday, It would be all because of you Rick. This is such an informative video!
@coreyaudet7582 Жыл бұрын
Dear real guitar player, you are a real guitar player just by having the desire to learn. You have more tools at your fingertips than my generation had and while striving to be as good as someone great, you are the one that needs to be as good as yourself and when you realize that music can be made with minimal guitar flash you may find that your own playing has a magic that will make certain people love it. Neil Young has a 2 chord song that is still on the radio everyday. Not knowing a thing about you I dare say that you can play that and therefore you can make music anything you want. It's how you got into it in the first place. What makes you enjoy the music that you listen to? The answer to that is what will make you great.

I've been checking out YT guitar players and they are all great, but I'm here for a reason and that's not just because he's awesome, but he has a depth of knowledge that is beyond my expectations. He has a true love for the art, and is kind enough to make it obtainable even for me(a drummer). If he wasn't such an amazing teacher I would have been intimidated and lost all hope. Thank goodness for good people.
@ayan41093 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you emphasize on making music at the end of the day, most videos emphasize on modules or chapters these days, such as scales, pentatonics, arpeggios, sweep picking etc. You hit the right notes on how to make it sound great (given you abide by certain rules)
@paulcooper57489 жыл бұрын
This was very good advice on how to break out of just going up and down with the scales love your playing and the tone to much enjoyed it.

Improvisation is absolutely the hardest thing to teach, it comes from a place that's beyond the intellect. It's from the heart rather than the head. I improvised on the guitar from day one (over 40 years ago), and could never understand why people found it so hard. I finally realised that people tried to over analyse and intellectualise their playing, especially classically trained musicians. Great shot at trying to explain it aspiring guitarists Rick! Thanks for another super video

Great video Rick! I feel like my phrasing is not too bad, yet I really struggle to build momentum for the climax in a solo. Superficially, I understand it's all about 'tension and release', but if you could do a video on building momentum in solos that would be amazing! Thanks

Hey Rick, You and Joel Hoekstra need togo on tour with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.._maybe get Chris Broderick as well! Throw in John Petrucci and Gus G and it's Generation Axe 2!! how do you stay that relaxed while playing? you make it look effortless
@BearReportsss10 жыл бұрын
Not to speak for Rick - but the truth is just that, you have to be relaxed to play relaxed. You have to use the smallest amount of effort to make it look effortless. Be in a healthy mind space while playing - expect to play well, be confident, don't fret too much if anything goes wrong. Let your ears guide you. Listen to what you did afterwards to pick out where you were sloppy and where you need improvement, but while you are playing just perform!
