Kudos for the video content! Sorry for chiming in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you heard the talk about - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (probably on Google)? It is a great exclusive guide for learning piano fast minus the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin finally got astronomical success with it.

This was exactly what I needed! I have been playing jazz for a bit now, and I haven't been able to work out why my ideas sounded so weak. I never would have attributed it down to the 'rhythmic weakness' of my chosen modes and ill-considered semi-tone choices. Thank you so much!

David Faria Yes, sorry I was running out of time. I'll make another video on minor chords to explain it in more detail. But basically the passing tones I'm using on that Gm are Ab, Eb, Db and B.

I don't know why people moan about the fact that the lesson's format is too fast for them, it's on youtube for goodness sake, just pause when you need time to take something in. And get this, maybe go back to a previous part, wow! Anyway, i like it as it's very informative, and work through it occasionally to keep my hand in, literally. Keep up the good work.

I have a masters in piano performance degree. Even for me the speed of your explanation is quite high. I would like to be able to understand how to fill up the chords better.
@Malcolm.Y4 жыл бұрын
IMO, multiple confusion starts at 4:00. Scales are mis-named, not that I like the names anyway. lol At 4:00 the so-called classical melodic minor does not descent G-F-E-D. It descends G-F-Eb-D. At 4:10 the so-called jazz melodic minor does not include a B-natural in descending. What he does at this point to keep the chord tones on the downbeat is to skip into the next octave to descend from A. IMO, what he has there is an ascending G Jazz Minor and a descending 8-note Bebop scale. FWIW, the idea of an 8-note scale to play the chord tones on downbeats is fine. However, you will find that long runs by great players don't always do that one "square" subdivision. The player "knows" where he has to end up and instinctively speeds up or slows down the run to make it fit.
@ezlam11422 жыл бұрын
@Tin Foil Hat S in jazz, you play the ascending melodic minor scale only, and not the descending. Just to clear up the confusion, the classical melodic minor scales and the jazz melodic minor scales are different.

Its a lot to take in at once, thats y i added it to my favorites so I can break it down and really utilize these tips. They should not define your playing, but rather spice it up a bit and take it from there and beyond! my dad is a professional Jazz Pianist John Colianni, and hes very against the use of scale formulas for jazz, and hes right to a degree, but i see something useful in this video that he cannot really get with but it is helpful for me because i use these as ideas, not to define my playing. All in all excellent, and you can tell that these ideas work to a degree from how this guy sounds when he does it in real jaz bebop time. Thanks again
@jazzpianousa8 жыл бұрын
Torre, please say hello to your dad from me (Reuel Lubag). I met him when he was with Mel Torme'. I was doing a different tour at the same time with the same booking agency and our tours both ended up in Akron, OH or someplace like that for the same two days. We all went to each others' shows. I do have to agree with your dad's approach as well. I teach from a chord perspective because melody dictates harmony and outlines it as well. Scales consist of ' passing ' notes between the important ones. The extensions beyond the octave do ' become ' chord tones, but it always goes back to 1,3,5 and. to a lesser degree 7 when all is said and done. Peace and blessings!

+Torre Colaianni This video only covers the introduction to the bebop scale, not the whole improvisation technique. Part 2 explains the minor scales, but also explains a bit the use of "Broken Chords" you are talking about. I hope it helps. Thanks for watching! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoPJm3SHq8plp68m7s

I have been looking for a channel which not only teaches the basic, but also the crucial element that make thing audibly pleasing and aesthetically appealing. I am looking forward to the online course and hope to contribute financially to make sure a regular run of this page.

I can tell by your knowledge that you are a very experienced jazz pianist and are good at teaching. There is so much to learn with different scales, it's mind numbing or maybe it's just me at 66 years old, I feel as though I don't have enough time to learn it all even though I have been a note reading player for many years and wanted to learn improvising but it just seems that you require an endless list of scalic knowledge to do it. Thanks anyway. Cheers

Great teaching. Thank you. Just wondering--what do you think about using fingering 1234 1234 1 in the bebop scale, rather than 12312341 3. You can end up on finger 1 on each C that way. I don't know....
@InsidePianoTutorials8 жыл бұрын
+Music @ Mission Thank you! Whichever fingering works for you is fine. You just have to be careful, because using different fingering changes the accent of the swing. Try different fingering and listen up for the accent, also do the same to find the right fingering on all the other 11 keys. Thanks for watching!
