Here is a quick battery MOD I did on my Black and Decker Bagless Cordless Hand Vac. Model # HHVJ315JD10.
Before: Less than 20 min RunTime
After: 40- 45 min of RunTime
UPDATE- 5/4/20: The battery type that are used are 18650, and not 20650 as in the video.
Although the modification I did in the video work fine for the past 5 months, I recommend using the same type of battery. I re-modified this battery pack and use six 18650 batteries of the same brand, running them in 3s2p. It is safer this way.
UPDATE 12/30/21 - The vacuum and 3s2p battery modification is still holding up well. I use the vacuum for 3-5 min jobs daily and don't have to worry about it running out of battery. I would say I only charge the vacuum once every 1 to 1 1/2 week.
Disclaimer: Follow at your own risk. You must have proper knowledge of how to care for and work with lithium batteries. Lithium batteries can catch fire and explode if mishandled. I am not responsible for any damages or injury that may occur.

Much respect! It is great to see a diy Dad with the smarts & skills to rip into an appliance that is under-engineered and upgrade it himself. More & more, manufacturers are skimping on products to make just a little extra profit on each unit, and now there are tons of cordless appliances with NiCd or lithium batteries that only last a year or two and the batteries are not designed to be user replaceable. That means millions of perfectly usable devices off to the landfill each year simply because a user swappable battery pack was never designed in. This should be illegal worldwide! (Planned obsolescence is bad for Mother Earth) I just obtained a discarded Black & Decker Smartech Cordless Vacuum HSVJ520JMBF27 with 5 nearly dead Lithium batteries that look like 18650's, but they are tightly packaged into a battery holder & soldered to the controller board - which will make it a challenge to remove & replace. But hey: I love a good challenge from a manufacturer hell bent on discouraging diy consumer repairs. A high five and a fist bump to brother Jin! Thanks for showing me the way in...

I added three size 18650 Li-Ion batteries from a discarded laptop battery pack. I tested and charged them fist , and then soldered each one in parallel with each one of the existing batteries. There is barely enough room for the third battery , but it is possible to do it , I did it. Works fantastic now. The charger charges the whole new battery system ( 6 cell : 3S, 2P)

I don't understand how adding 2 extra batteries can work in parallel with 3 battery cells. This should be impossible. What did you actually do (you never show it in the video, curiously enough).

adding additional batteries in parrallel will increase the mah of the cell, resulting in longer run time. I have since replaced this pack with 6 new cells of the same brand which overall is safer.

It seems like connecting the 2 new batteries in parallel to the original 3 will reduce the voltage.

@@HBV90 If you add a set of 3 batteries (not physically possible in this case), then you are correct. I presume the original 3 batteries are in series making it a 12V max pack/10.8V nominal. If you add 2 more batteries in series making it into an 18V nom. pack, you run the risk of burning out the motor winding. If connected in parallel, then I believe you will find that the resulting pack (2 sets of series batteries in parallel) will be below the original voltage. The other consideration is that the charging circuit is based on a pack at 10.8V nom., when you add a 7.2V pack (2 x 3.6V in series) to this, the charging circuit will still be charging for a 10.8V pack. In which case, I suspect the added batteries will not last long or worse still - they will get very hot when charging and may catch fire as there is no thermistor on the added batteries.

Great video! I hope someone can help me answer a few quick questions. I was only able to find 3800mAh 18650s instead of 3000mAh. Will this cause a problem? Is there are risk of fire or explosion? Will the vacuum stop charging at 3000 and not fully utilizing the battery's capacity? Thanks!

if you increase total watt hours (VAC x Ah) will the battery monitoring/charging circuity allow? or are you risking damage from overcharging?

Li ion voltage varies with capacity. So votlage decrease as the battery runs down. So an example4.2v fully charge down to 3.2v. So the discharge curve is relatively flat. Now i know some will jump at me cause there is different voltages for different lithium ions batteries. Example your phone can go up to 4.35 and some higher.
@situbes.972
@situbes.972 11 ай бұрын
So in charging the lithium ion. The charger is set to constant current early on. Constant current and voltage rises as the battery gets charge. At certain voltage the charge switches to limit the voltagr and current starts to decrease as th battery gets fuller (in simplistic charger that would be constant voltage mode). So in case of more capacity (Amp hours) the charger would take a longer to chargre the battery.

Jin, help please - a quick question - how would you solder/weld the additional 2 batteries? I saw the 3 are connected 1 and 3, at positive, where 2 is negative and connected to 3, and on the other side (which you show in your vid) they are connected the reverse way 1 and 3 on negative and 2 on positive connected to 3 negative. It is connected in a very confusing way and I can't understand why, although I can do the same. The only thing I don't know how to do is how to connect the two additional batteries so voltage stays the same I assume 3 x 3.7v= 11.1v nominally 10.8v per product description.
@m80116
@m80116 3 жыл бұрын
I guess they're voltage sensing. Normally all 3 of the cells should be connected in series to form the advertised 10.8 voltage. For what I can understand he run the two additional batteries in parallel in a series configuration. Meaning that one single cell was stacked in series with two "supercells" which have two cells in parallel to themselves each. To be honest I'd try to double everything at all costs as this configuration (if this is the case) seems very unbalanced and unable to exploit the parallel cells' potential. + BATT - + BATT - + BATT - + BATT - + BATT -

@@HBV90 thanks for pointing this out. Do you know if there's a problem disconnecting the cells from the bms? I have bricked laptop and drone battery packs doing so, it's a feature they implement so that the user doesn't temper with batteries and if he tries he's met with a failure and inoperative battery that needs replacing anyway.
