The CP on the main screen is the total of your top 4 characters. At least according to the game when you click it. So boosting the CP of characters that aren't your top 4 won't effect it unless they are upgraded into your top 4.

Lv 80 item giving 690 stats and Lv 40 item giving 816 stats. Game is right Lv 40 rainbow item is better than purple. :p
