Hi Jim, if I remember right, ADSL stands for Asymmetrical DSL because of unequal download to upload bit rates (speed). And, S(ymmetrical)DSL is more expensive because the upload speed is same as the download speed. Great video!!!

As a cable tech before I install equipment I verify levels from the tap, ground block to device along with verifying the integrity of the coax, inside and outside . If any of the levels don't add up I replace the cable. and before I show the customer that their service is on I run speed tests on my test equipment and verify speed tier rates on the billing side. Also that drop should have been replaced at the install.

can also be the default channel on your wifi and you find out everyone around you is the same and change it to an empty channel (mine being 11) and talk about a huge difference.

A few tips for getting accurate speed tests: 1. These type of speed tests are an estimate and cannot account for a lot of variables. Read the fine print in the test page for more detail. Some ISPs provide their own and require you use it to verify the bandwidth of their service. 2. Make your computer or any other computer on your local network is not also using the Internet. That will reduce the test estimate. Shut down all other applications and computers. Also, security software running on the computer may significantly slow traffic speed (because it is inspecting all incoming packets, as designed.) 3. If possible use an Ethernet-connected computer for most accurate results. Wifi is a radio communications connection between your device and the access point (and maybe not even the modem connected to your ISP.) There are many common fluctuations in wifi signal that keep your device from getting a consistent connection to the AP, much less the speed test. Note speed test and wifi signal are completely separate. Wifi connection is a completely separate issue. 4. Choosing the closest test server may not give realistic results as general internet usage regularly reaches for distant servers. Experiment with geographically distant servers. 5. In the U.S., another good speed test is at www.dslreports.com/speedtest which also has a community of people tracking and resolving speeds for various providers. Happy Speeding on the Internet! 🐱

Great video. I'm contracted for 150Mb download and got 146Mb. My upload is same as yours. Can I just add , it's easy to confuse Mb (Mega bit) with MB (Mega byte). 100Mb/s is equal to around 12.5MB/s.

Question for you that no one seems to know the answer...fiber optic cable coming into house...TP-Link Archer C700 modem/router...350 Mbps....hard-wired PS4 (game system)....husband fires up laptop wifi using 5G or streams Netflix, Hulu, KZbin, etc. and lags out my wireless controller, wireless headset....no one seems to know why this happens....any clue? My ISP won't do anything because it's not their equipment and TP-Link won't respond to my inquiry for help....

What probably happened in the KZbinr's case was that his complaining caused the central office to reconfigure the second router to bond additional chanels., rather than explain the facts of life to him, that 20mbps is not guaranteed, but maximum. Every quoted connection is always stated as "UP TO x mbps". With DSL speed drops with distance from the providers equipment . WIth cable it drops as the number of subscribers on the providers LAN increases. (AT&T uses scam advertising of a flat rate for connectivity, by quoting a speed that they can only provide to fiber-connected customers even in areas where fiber is not available, only DSL). ISP cable modems have from 1 to 8 bondable channels, with 1 being used for the lowest throughput service they offer, and 2 for "good enough" which is typically 25mbps (quoted) moderately loaded cable connection. One trick for areas that are new to cable internet is to initially bond more channels until the number of subscribers increases to the point where congestion is an issue. DOCSIS3 cable modems can be remotely reconfigured by the ISP to reset the number of bonded channels up or down whenever they please, which is usually 3 or 10AM, when most residential traffic is at its lowest, and whenever a modem is "upgraded" to newest equipment. Another scam is to provide customers with low quality WiFi access points, with 2.4GHz throughputs far below the 100mbps of a wired ethernet system. This becomes more apparent with newly purchased portable devices that have 802.11 ac modems and several people try to stream 1080 or better HD simultaneously. "Speedtest" tools are unreliable measures of performance, because they will show only the maximum possible speed. This test allows the ISP to buffer data before sending and starts timing from when the first handshake between servers is OK and the one at completion is received. You can observe a delay of up to 5 seconds before a test starts. The result is that the throughput is faster for the duration of the test than you will experience during a sustained data transfer such as a backupo and restore from cloud storage. It may show whether you have a substandard connection from your ISP, but doesn't guarantee that you will experience that speed during use. If you want a good indication of your actual throughput, MANUALLY copy a folder of mixed size data files that is larger than 100MB up and down from a cloud server. Time how long it takes to complete. Divide the file size by the seconds and multiply by 8. If you have Windows you can use the Task Manager to monitor the network connection and watch the throughput graphically. In practice, cable ISPs will buffer data for DOWNLOAD of the first 5 MB of transferred data to dleiver it after a delay at near the maximum advertised connection speed. Sustained throughput will be noticably slower, say 30% less. It's not uncommon for idle connections to be dropped and for it to take SECONDS to reestablish a connection through an urban ISP with oversubscribed systems. The best way to avoid this is to keep the connection active with a background process constantly polling a network server for small amounts of data. Every time I've seen poor internet service it's been either a DSL connection, bad interior wiring and/or cheap hubs. Wifi has its own problems with ISPs using default settings for channel operation, so that neighbors interfer with each other BEFORE mispositioning the WIFI AP.

I think I heard a 10 Meg baseline was needed for quality video streaming without buffering. The only question I have is how far my customer premise equipment is from the nearest ISP's network terminal, and secondly, what is that range limit coax wise before the necessity of amplifiers - a potential source of degradation?

Why not just say your internet speed can only be changed by your ISP from the exchange, you cannot increase speed from your home pc, laptop ect unless you are not getting the speed that your isp is sending to your house in the first place. This is called the speed at which your internet speed is syncing at. You at home cannot increase this speed, if it is even possible it is done from the exchange.

my internet is suppose to be 200mb/s. If i do a test on speedtest.net it only goes to about 95mb/s. But when I download stuff I watched it reach like 25.8 MB/s. why would there be a difference in the two. kafoure93 have you always had 200 Mb speed? Some NIC's only have 10/100 speed also. If you were using a computer with 10/100 NIC ethernet port with 100 to 120 Mb down internet speed your results will be 75-95 Mb down on a speed test. If you're using a 10/100/1000 gigabit port with a wired connection and your speeds are 75-95 Mb down, then you can complain to your ISP.

The by word they use is, "up to" 50mbs, then they tell you, that current network traffic lowers your actual ability. the second half of this is change your DNS to one that's not as cluttered like the one they supply.

I tested mine with ATT Speed test And Speedtest.net, and Iboth say I have a lousy Upload speed of "0.23 Mpbs" !!! Im VERY Unsatisfied with that! My Download speed 6.0 Mpbs...also very poor! I just found this out today.
