I am a newb at tub install, but am well respected in building envelope evaluation and installation. Is there any concern for placing mortar directly on untreated plywood? Seems like over time the direct contact of the portland cement to the plywood would cause a dry-rot condition? Why wouldn't you use a layer of 15lb paper/15mil plastic/waterproof membrane between the plywood and mortar to prevent moisture to travel out of the plywood?

Always think of the next guy remodeling and put some painter's plastic, or any type of plastic sheet ,under the mortar so the tub comes out easily in 30 years leaving the subfloor clean and undamaged.

A lot lighter than the old cast iron tubs. I had to take a sledgehammer to mine to remove it. I replaced it with an American standard with americast steel, about 120lbs. I put down a mortar bed like Steve did, that makes it very solid.

much much lighter!! Mortar beds are fantastic and we highly recommend using one if in the directions. Americast tubs are great options

If there is microfilm attached, leave it on until the final cleaners remove it!! Use polymer modified thinset instead of mason mix especially over osb or plywood.

We had two acrylic tubs with surrounds installed when rebuilding after a house fire. Both cracked all across the bottom. High profile disaster restorations firm employing very marginal subcontractors. The plumbers repiped the house with PVC. I believe the copper that they took out was their pay for the job.

I returned this tub and bought a American Standard one from Lowe's. Just wasn't comfortable with how flimsy this one was.

I agree. This tub is a flimsy peice of hell. The brace for the apron is useless because it only aligns the center. The ends are still floppin in the breeze. In my opinion this tub was not finished being manufactured as it comes. Delta should be ashamed of this product.

Aren't you supposed to use adhesive to install the apron support and not sealant?

The brands recommended by Delta in their install guides are dual-purpose sealant and adhesive, e.g. DAP Premium Kitchen & Bath Adhesive Sealant.

Home Repair Tutor yes, I suppose ;) I bought a MAAX bath and I have to put them 1/8 inch BELOW the sides (under the lip) of the bath. So I am a bit surprised it’s not a general thing . Mine has a whole plywood structure underneath imbedded in the fibreglass

that's tough, we don't really have a great fix for that. However, it might be a good idea to call the manufacturer and talk with their technical support. Frequently they have fantastic advice but temper your hopes a little on this one.

use the drill in reverse. forward motion can crack the fiberglass/acrylic.

There should have been an apron. If there wasn't one in the box, exchange it for another.

Tubs crack continuously around drain section. Installed two that have. Poor design and very cheap. Installed 100% by manufacturer specs.

Mortar is used not so much to support the tub, but its to dampen the sound of the water hitting the base. Otherwise it sounds hallow and loud like a cheap motel tub. Support comes from screwing the apron into the studs and the plywood you have under the tub
