My Man!!! I struggled with the oil pump part for 2 hours. The engine is in the truck, and it's a K10 4X4. I'm doing this all alone, on top of it all. Finding TDC was a mother, but I finally figured out that if I just stick a rubber cap into the spark plug hole then use a breaker bar to turn the engine, the compression stroke will pop the rubber cap out of the hole. Then I just followed the rest of your video, FIRST CRANK, she started right up. Just a few degrees of time to adjust, and then she ran like a kitten. THANKS!

Thank u. My brother gave me his 1980 Chevy c30 1 ton. On truck says 4.1. I believe it's a v6. The engine that's in there is a small block v8. Don't know if it's a 5.2 or what. But it has the same distributor. The engine doesn't run. So I tested the compression. Getting compression. I removed the cap. Jump started from the starter. The rotor doesn't turn. When I removed the distributor from engine. Turn it freely by hand. Turns freely. Before I did all of that. The distributor looks brand new. I found out several spark cables were in wrong. So I replaced them in order. Driver 1357 passenger 2468. Then I recorrect the cables on the distributor. 18436572 clockwise. Then I did a spark test. No spark. So when I removed the cap. And all jump start the truck. To watch the rotor to turn. Does not turn. Is that because the timing is off? Where 1 is not at TDC. To be marked at 0. And the rotor was not at 11 o'clock and 5 o'clock psosition. And distributor pointing same direction your showing. Or can it be because the oil pump where the shaft is? Good sign block is not locked. Where should I start? I could not find the markings on the block and harmonic balancer. I do know when piston goes down. Builds up compression. Then goes up releases it. I removed sparkplug from 1. Held my finger over the hole. Then I jump started the truck again. To feel the pressure. As it released the pressure. I took screw driver insert it into the spark plug hole. Felt the piston. But not fully sure is at fully TDC. One way for me to find out. Is by removing the head cover. Then turn the crank clockwise. To watch the spring go up and down. I know if it's all the way up. Then the piston is up. I also know the marking on the crank harmonic balancer. Has to be at 0. Does that mean if the timing is off. It could cause no spark? Or doesn't let the rotor to turn?
@scottsinfl3 жыл бұрын
If that dist. didnt turn when you jumped the starter then the timing chain or top timing gear is broke. Im sure you have fixed by now or found what the problem is.

Awesome and VERY helpful! I'm about to replace the points distributor in my '70 Corvette with an HEI like this one. My Corvette has a tach-drive distributor and just got to figure out now how to connect the power wires to the HEI. Have read many different opinions on how to do that part...some say I must add a relay, others say I don't so still confused about the power wiring. Thanks so much for this helpful video!! Top notch and I will follow your instructions on the installation.
@scottsinfl4 жыл бұрын
I think the 70 vette used a ballast wire that dropped the volts on the coil to 9volts it will have a braded like wire case on the outside and the HEI needs 12V is why they want you to run a relay. The relay just is used as a trigger with the stock hot wire and you get 12v from a good 12v source through the relay to run the HEI. I hope that helps you know why they want you to use the relay. I ran a wire straight from my ign. switch threw my wiper door cut-out knob for a theft-deterrent but I have a 73 front end so didn't need the wiper door cut out with no wiper door now.

If you have a points distributor you need to set the balancer to at least 8* BTDC on the timing tab rather than 0 or else you will hit the intake with the vacuum pod if your initial timing is set at 14*. If you want the timing higher then you won’t be able to set it if you dropped the distributor in at TDC on #1 comp with the balancer at 0 on the timing tab. Restab it at TDC like you would normally but first move the balancer to 10* BTDC and the rotor still pointing to #1 plug wire distributor cap post.

You get #1 TDC on comp. stroke on 0. Use an oil pump pump primer shaft to line up the distributor to the oil pump shaft. It doesn't matter. Point the rotor at #1 terminal on the cap. Turn the distributor way back opposite normal rotation and then install it. Then adjust for normal setting. Turn the crank ONLY in normal rotation direction. This causes the chain to be tight.
@scottsinfl6 жыл бұрын
The reason why I install it this way is that most of the time Im starting a rebuilt motor and want it to start in the first turn or 2. I dont want to be turning the motor and wiping the break-in lube off the camshaft to line up the oil pump drive even if its 1 turn. Thanks for watching.

I was doing so many corvette motors back in the 80's that I thought of an easy way to do it. Also when you build a flat tappet cam motor you don't want it to wipe the break-in lube off the cam by having to turn the motor too much. You want it to start the first time around if posable.

Do I need to have the #1 piston at 0 degrees tdc or 10 tdc before firing up the motor?

Yeppers good job just watched your vid to verify I'm doing it right, works every time, and I would add just put a wire on number one set the crank on 10` btdc with ignition on rotate slowly till it fires number one and lock her down , your timed at 10 degrees before tdc and she will run like a top

Great, I'm glad it helped. I had to put my dist. in my 73 vette 1 tooth counterclockwise to make the tach drive cable angle just right so it wouldn't bind. I think the midyear didn't have that problem so much that is only if you're using a tach drive dist still.
