How to Install a Doorknob and Deadbolt in 10 minutes - Kwikset Lock Install with Smart Key

In this video I show you how to easily change a door knob and dead bolt, a project that takes less than 10 minutes to do. We are installing a lock made by Kwikset that features the smart key technology for easily rekeying the locks throughout your home. This is a very DIY friendly project that will save you a few hundred dollars in locksmith charges if you have multiple doors to do.
What is great about projects like this one, is that it can have an outsized impact on the look of your door if you are replacing damaged, mismatched, or just ugly knobs. It can definitely improve the functionality of your door and it's a great project to build up your confidence in handling little repairs around the house. As you can see in the video, you can perform this install with just a screwdriver!

Kwikset's microscopic diagrams and lack of screw labelling make it difficult for people who can't see worth a crap. They also put the wrong screws in with the wrong part of the pack. Had to resort to youtube for what should have been a simple task, making it ten times more of a pain. Thanks!

What if the latch is stuck in the out position, preventing the release of the doorknob? No amount of WD40 will fix this. It's the main reason I'm replacing the knob in the first place. Great video! Thanks for the walk-through! Nevermind. I got it😊. For anyone struggling with this, I could not find tips on the internet for my situation. My door latch was stuck in open position. I could not turn door knob and latch would not push in. I remove the parts like Robert said but outside doorknob spindle was still stuck in latch. I gently hammered at latch at the edge of door until it moved in enough to release the spindle. I was afraid of damaging the door.

You would need access of the original key that is current to rekey the knob.

@@RemodelWithRobert Initially thought your Seagull to be the Intramatic. I have the Intramatic H38416711 and did look at other options, several that were even more expensive. Made absolutely no sense not to choose the Hamilton for a variety of reasons personally and too, purchased with a 25% discount; obtained 3 years ago through an AD associated with a KZbin channel. Not aware of a way to pass that info privately, but if you have a method, let me know and I'll share the contact with you. Had to search the Goofy Panda; yes, interesting and fun take... panda with an eye ailment haha.

All great, except that I am really confused about the keys. What is this about old key & new key. If it is a new deadbolt, why are we using an old key? Why do we need old keys to set up a new lock and key?

I had to replace 6 doors and I could not buy 6 matching sets with the same key code. So if you cant buy all matching, the kwikset locks with smartkey technology allow you to easily reset all your new locks to one key.

The manufacturer's instructions on the kwikset lock just need to add one very basic but key information: The keys that come with the lock work with the lock as is. You do not need to do anything to the key right away. The instructions give the impression that wreaking is a necessity and you will not be able to lock the door without that. This is more of a comment for the kwikset people, not for you.

You do not mention what door lock to buy based on whether the door opens back to the left or right, and whether the hinges are to the left or right from the outside.

You can, but if you are buying multiple sets, they may have different keys. If you want to set all of them to one key, then the smartkey option makes that a simple process.
