This is just what I needed! Right down to the... "you'll want the window bigger". I had a size in mind but I really think with all the work I should just go bigger, once it's done its done and I'll regret it if I don't. Your pond is pretty much what I'm planning on doing myself so to actually see it at different stages is fantastic. Thanks for the great video. I'm excited to get started on the pond!

So I am just about to install a kockney koi skimmer box on my pond just wondering how best to install it. The skimmer box is around 1 inch above the main water level on my pond. well I hope it is the pond seems to be level know. So what advise would you give about fitting a skimmer ? the skimmer seems to be a 1/4 above what will be the water level. I in vision the water level of the pond will be about 1 inch below the top of the sleepers. Above that will be a capping piece of wood which is about 50mm in thickness. 2

Hi Andy, I'm new here . You are a natural in front of cameras. I love your calm laid back approach to teaching us about fish. I binge watching your work....I have a 13 year old pond , although just shubunkin , goldfish and ornamental goldfish ... Just love how you explain things so clearly .... I've a feeling your in UK, but perhaps up north. I cannot hear well, I'm trying to guess. Where are you based , if you don't mind me asking ? I agree on a window at the side so you can watch them from the garden seating area. But it still looks wonderful. We are hoping to move house in the near future ...we are based in Wales. So I'm taking great tips from you. We bought a wooden fish pond for when we arrive there..... ..then over time we will build a brick pond similar to yours but more rugged and natural on the outside . Now you've enticed me to get a window ...very interesting . Absolutely loved how you covered the window in thick padded material during the winter . Also loved your winter roof system too..very clever . Looking forward to watching many more videos . Thank you . 👍👍👍

Acrylic tends to be better than glass. It doesnt shatter from impact like tempered glass does, resists cracking a lot better, is cheaper, and much lighter in weight. The only downside is that it can scratch easier than tempered glass.

I love the idea of the window but not sure about your approach, I'm going to build the cut out like yours but I'm going to make it a frameless window, I am thinking along the lines of fitting a roofing lat a couple of inches in from the inside edges of the concrete cut out on the inner walls and then fiberglassing over it all, then get a local car window fitter to sicoflex around it and fit the glass, no frame required and only a single place where a leak could develop, no screws, no frame and 1 point of failure... what do you think ?
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a plan. I only put the frame in as I didn't have the experience of cutting out the recess. Once it was cut there was no going back so made the frame Instead. Can't knock it till you've tried it. Let me know how you go on with your idea..😉🤔👍

Mine are a 2 metre window an a 3metre window both 40 mm thick. The 3 metre was just shy of a quarter of a tonne. Glass suckers just couldn't handle it but because the 316 stainless frames were embedded in the walls and the front was flush with the outside of the pond we set the glass on trestles on the ledge inside the pond and then rotated them upwards into the frame and onto the silicone. All very stressful. My frames were made by Atlantica of 316 stainless. Not cheap but brilliant..
@joeyj6526
@joeyj6526 2 жыл бұрын
I've been looking at the Atlantica frames because the window is at the front. Would you recommend them a year on then? I've seen they are pricey but once they're there they should last forever. Did you build your pond from blocks and if so did you have them laid down or upright mortared in?
@willp358
@willp358 2 жыл бұрын
@@joeyj6526 Yes I would still highly recommend them, they are a major piece of quality engineering. I keep the frame outers clean with a soft damp cloth. They were a fair bit of work to put in but they really do the task well and the koi are constantly at the front especially when they see the food coming..
@willp358

@@joeyj6526 my construction was 7N block on flat with mortar to ground level, then I put a reinforced concrete collar around at that level so I had a base to put the facing stone on. The frames were sat on the block at ground level and the blocks were built up either side. The frames protruded from the flat blocks by the thickness of the facing stone. I also put re-bar down through the frame lugs so that there was no chance of buckling or movement.
@joeyj6526

Thanks for the reply! I've just seen another video by this fella and seen how he had blocks laying down flat and then blocks upright, so the bottom is stronger against the water pressure. Oh and don't cut the tops out if you are doing infinity windows until the frames are all set in because that keeps them all square. You can cut the top while supporting the other end and vice versa then carefully file the exposed frame ends to a polished finish and jobs a goodun.

@@KoiPondLifestyle I bought mine, and named him Shadow, because he was black backed with scales there, but a silvery/bluish along his sides. Paid $8.00 at Petsmart two summers ago as a baby 3.5 inches long. Last summer, he turned into this beautiful pale blue along his sides, dark blue scales on his back and a fiery red belly. Then, this year he spawned with my white female and has now lost virtually all of his color afterward. The babies were co-spawned with a golden version of him, black scales along his back. If I am building a 500 gallon pond with the front glass, what do you think the thickness of the glass should be? Pond is 5 feet x 3 feet x 5 feet (not too large in US).
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Liz, I would say you could get away with a single 15mm thick piece of glass if your pond is only 500 Gallons. I would always suggest to over engineer everything for that piece of mind and check with your supplier as most are able to calculate the water volume and pressure against the glass? Good luck with your pond build. Have you seen my video on pond building? That should help with your planning.😉👍👍 Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6SXXoiuetRqmbc

Hello sir what type of glass you used in your glass window?? Tnx sir
@KoiPondLifestyle

Hi, the glass is 2 sheets of 12.5mm tempered glass between a lamination. The majority of glass suppliers can supply this type of glass. The thickness will depend on the size and volume of water you are looking to hold behind it... Hope this info helps.. 😉👍

Hi, I have seen others using 'Bond it' HA6 silicone which is a marine grade safe for the water. I wouldn't opt for the cheap bathroom stuff due to it high content of non marine chemicals and how good it would be with its long term underwater tight sealing that isn't needed in you bathroom. Good luck if your fitting a window and thanks for watching...

Great video and 100% will take on all the information!.. can I ask, where did you get the little plastic pieces that you put into the bottom on the glass for support?.. Also other then the visible screws you used to hold the frame in did you use anything else is sealant or anything else to keep it to hold in place? Thank you
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, glad you enjoyed the video. The spacers are used when fitting house hold window frames in so you can get them from most DIY shops. The screws were there just to hold the frame in place. As soon as the fibreglass goes in that will hold the frame. Then it's the sealant and water pressure that holds the glass in the frame, hence why you need to get the water in as soon as the sealant has gone off... 😉👍
@porklehgoguy
@porklehgoguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@KoiPondLifestyle oh I see.... So I could potentially have a tidy light layer of sealant around the frame as well as 2 screws each side and 3 along the bottom for example to half the frame in place. Then spacers along the bottom with sealant/mastic until glass if fixed and fill with water. Also I wasn't going to fibre glass the pond as I was thinking to concrete the inside of the pond and then apply 3-4 layers of black G4 Pond sealant which I've been told is more then enough to make the pond waterproof and will not leak. What are your thoughts on that?
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 3 жыл бұрын
@@porklehgoguy I would suggest to go as heavy as you can neatly get the sealant in place as more sealant is better than not enough as you'll get one chance at the fitting or you'll make a mess of the window if you have to have a second go. Yes the sealant will also work. What ever liner you put in, make sure you go over every inch to ensure there's no sharp edges for the fish once they are in.. 👍😉
