Thank you for the great video. I am planning on putting in a pocket door to my master bathroom. I loved the way you cut the sheetrock. I am hoping to salvage my sheetrock so I don't have to buy some.

Great detailed video - we’d been told it could only be done while the house was being built and therefore too late for us. We need a door between the dining room and kitchen for more than one reason and because I’d given up on the pocket door my search criteria was for butler door installation. Don’t know how this turned up but I’m sure glad it did. Thank you for sharing!

Best video I’ve seen showing how to install a pocket door into an existing wall. Will be having this done when we remodel the bathroom. Any suggestions on a door for the bathroom closet in a small space ? Would like something maybe that doesn’t have a doorknob. Maybe a door that closes with a magnet ?

Neat job & not as easy as you made it look. If the door had to be just there, a couple of things to note ... 1. Cutting out the diagonal metal brace makes the wall weaker. 2. Lintels need support from underneath so the jamb studs should be checked in to the lintel. 3. Platerboard direct onto brickwork @ 4.47 creates a concealed termite access, so you would need additional termite control.

Maybe I'm missing something but what is stopping the door swinging like a pendulum inside the frame and scraping the door finish? I don't see any guides or rails at the bottom. Does it have something in the frame like a rubber wheel either side or something to keep it centred? Been thinking of fitting one to my bathroom but I don't want to have to refinish the door regularly.

I'm planning a pocket door for my house too. Other than the obvious reason, that the pocket door does not take additional space on the wall when opened, what would be some pros and cons of a cavity vs a wall mounted sliding door. By the way, great video!

Can you tell me if anyone has ever done a pocket door that goes into the ceiling, slides up and down instead of sideways? I'm adding a bathroom to my master bedroom and building the wall with 2×2 footer and 2×4 studs facing wide side out to make a skinny wall and take up less room. I have plenty of room in the attic above to do, just wondered if that was a new concept or not

My Method: use one of those Multi Function tools: 1) Use the Multi Function to cut the nails holding the noggins to the studs, then roll/peel the noggins away from the wall. 2) Same tool but with the with the FLUSH Cutting blades. Fit the blade to the Multi Function tool at Right angles and use this to cut through the studs at a point say 150 mm in from each end. 3) Next peel/roll the studs away from the gyproc. this seems to do the least damage as mostly the paper comes away with the stud where the glue is and nothing more. If there are clouts then they pull through the gyproc and seem not to bother the surface on the other side of the gyproc. 4) Use the same Multi Function to cut the base plate into pieces and lever them up with chisel and patience. I used the above method to disassemble a wall on one side (the dirty area) leaving the entire wall in place and leaving the bedroom on the other side dust and noise free till I was ready to break through and finish the job. I employed patience and measure twice cut once. çheers

+yeeha 123 That's ok mate i know what you meant :) No its nessesary as most of the heads are designed to have a track that will take the weight of a door. Generally speaking you should avoid fixing through any heads of door frames or windows because they can sag under a roof load and deflect windows and doors. That is also why a 10-15mm gap should always be left at the top of a door frame or window in case a door or window heads sags or deflects under a load. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching.

Minor concern, mate: that tubesteel corner brace you cut out at the beginning... isn't that cyclone protection? What did you do to put some lateral strength back in, once the pocket door was hung? Could you have gone with a header for that reason even though the wall was not load bearing? As a side note, I see some comments hung up on the english side of things - they should try talking to a Scotsman, and get a little perspective.
@OurBuild

+Flinch Thanks for the comment material. As for the bracing always check with a structural engineer. Ours was ok due to bracing further along the wall and also in the roof. Haha I can talk a little fast sometimes 😂

Just make sure you seal up for air tightness inside these cavities. Spiders love coming in from the roof from these types of doors and they aren’t great for trying to condition a space. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3PUoH55n9GJjbs @ 9:18 Great video.

Well.. you not pulling down a load baring wall, but a bracing wall which is also a structural reinforcing wall that gives stiffness to your house, if you see the diagonal steel brace you've cut out... Bad example, and can be misleading..
