I followed everything you did but unfortunately I saw this video after completion, I used 30 grit sand underneath the putting surface and it is too soft when you walk on it even after tamping and rolling. Im guessing 20 grit sand on top of the hard layer would get rid of that then rake 30 grit sand into the top putting surface not below?

You guys are awesome with concrete, I could never do what y’all do. But I install turf for a living. Used many techniques, but this was not good. Sand on top of the base is horrible. Sand will shift. Always. It’s loose and will shift. You want to use a thin layer of decomposed granite (grey fines), fills low spots, packs smooth with a vibrating plate and now you have a smooth surface that doesn’t have any exposed rock, doesn’t make crunching noises when walking on it, and more importantly, will never shift. The big staples? Bad idea. Always visible and ugly, and if your ground is compacted hard they bend. Use the 3.5” finishing nails or seam tape/glue they are way less visible than those hideous stitches. Sand as infill? Sand has dirt and dirt will attract molds, fungus’ and can potentially grow weeds, and holds in moisture, you have to use a silica, vinyl type infill that contains no “sand”. And lastly, it’s ok to “Frankenstein” pieces in so long as you can’t see the seam, and all your grain is going the same direction. It appears there were parts where the grains weren’t lined up in the fringe, Which doesn’t look good with pieces going a different direction, and Bc of that those seams are visible. There were other techniques you used that I don’t, but I thought were ok, because there are many ways to skin a cat. But those ones I mentioned are a big deal. I’ve learned a lot about concrete from watching you guys, but take my advise on these things. For Turf is my jungle and I know it well. 😎😄

That’s very helpful, thanks for the tips!

I also install turf for a living and this was hard to watch. I will completely agree with the gentleman who first commented. I glue everything then stake the perimeter. I would have been fired for putting in all those SOD STAPLES.
@J9XXL4 жыл бұрын
Matt Duffey terribly sorry as I’m just seeing your comment. The guy who just commented was the only alert I have ever got off this comment lol. Hope your green turned out well. But those 3.5” nails are finishing nails, and you can get at any hardware store. Even in a years time, I have changed my technique. I now create my entire outline of the putting green, with 2” bendaboard. My fringe and green line up and get cut to the shape, and I staple it all down. No putting any nails on any side of the turf. Secure, strong, and you can’t see any nail head marks. 👌🏽
@viliamilatu12714 жыл бұрын
I also form putting green with bender board but...i wrap the green over the bender board 2inches then staple to the side of bender board. Then base material for fringe goes up against that and kinda sandwich it in. Then when i lay fringe i tuck edges, 1/4" or so, with carpet tucker and mini sledgehammer.. its just how i do it.
@OMGWTFLOLSMH2 жыл бұрын
I was surprised by the staples. I had a friend that had a sizeable putting green in his backyard and I don't remember there being any staples holding it down.
