I’ve looked for the perfect video to answer my questions and by god I’ve found it, thank you very much! Best of luck!

The thimble tile is required to be sealed to the flue with refractory cement. Also make sure there are no gaps where smoke can escape the liner. A better, albeit much more expensive option is to reline the chimney with stainless steel.

Thank you for your comment. I am sure there are better options BUT this seems to be working OK.

Just trying to offer some constructive criticism. I have been a professional in the hearth industry for over 20 years and could tell some real horror stories about doing it incorrectly.

its an old thread but i am curious i have a clay thimble going into a masonry chimney for my wood stove the opening is 6 inches can just slip in a six inch stove pipe? is it ok for the stove pipe to be tight against the thimble?

From my experience, NEVER mortar the thimble into the the chimney. When it expands to heat, it only has one way to go, into the chimney. It will press into the flue liner and DETONATE. I use furnace and stove ropes, surround the thimble and refractory it in. Then butyl caulk it. The chimneys I’ve opened to see carnage to, usually always begins at the saddle and thimble. The taller the chimbey, the worse.
