Just a tip. You could use a NanoPi R4S instead of a Raspberry Pi. The Nano comes with 2 Gigabit ethernet ports, but no WiFi - that needs an adapter, but you won't need the USB-to-Ethernet adapter. However, if you're going to connect it to a WiFi Router anyway, you can just use that WiFi from the router instead. Comes in 1GB RAM and 4GB RAM versions. I have a NanoPi R4S 4GB and have it set up as a firewall. Works great.

Rob, being a network engineer that goes back to the days of original thicknet and thinnet, arcnet and banyan vines, I appreciate many of your presentations, but this one is lacking in full capabilities. First of all, you should connect your gigabit Ethernet switch to your cable modem and then all your devices into that switch. This would give you a better throughput on your devices. There are a few other points I would like to help you with to incorporate into a part 2 that is needed for this video. I will reach out to you by email.

If I remember correctly, Google services use the Mac address to map the location of WiFi networks, so even if users with location enabled are not connected to your network, if they are nearby they can report your Mac address to google by using mobile data.
@robbraxmantech4 жыл бұрын
Yes. that's true of standard Google Android phones. But that's not your device Mac Address. That's the Wifi router's Mac address.
@longnamedude39474 жыл бұрын
You could just run a script to periodically change the MAC address, or just tell the router (via software/firmware) to not distribute it's MAC address to any device and instead force yourself to manually type in the initial MAC address on the client device that wants to connect to the router, there's other ways you could go about this too, you don't need hide you MAC address, you could use alternate methods of distributed networking, or you could implement active protection from such surveying methods by combating it..... You can look into that on your own time if you want more information on that subject. Don't ever "leave it to another day", protect your network before it even goes online for the first time, don't take any risks, and inform people around you of the risks they are exposed to. We aren't living in the 90's anymore, everything you do can be publicly monitored by any person very easily, even if it is digital. This is about a fight for continued freedom and a right to speak freely and live with privacy & security.

I've seen alot about pptp vs. l2tp with this. the Router is L2tp. which as the name implies is only layer 2 of the osi model. Whereas the pptp being i think layer i think it was layer5. Thereby the layer 5 protocol is inherently harder to see through by an ISP. Whereas the layer 2 takes a little doing but still can be seen through..... or so i've heard.

Cool vid. I have a question. Is the brax router necessary at all? Some routers have a built-in VPN configuration tool. Would that also do? What would be the differences? Another question: One downside to using a single VPN for every network user is that VPNs offer lower speeds and multiple users would make the experience even more frustrating. What happens if I set up a VPN both in my router and on a device? When starting the VPN on the device, will it bypass the VPN configuration in the router or would I then be using 2 chained VPNs?

Hi Rob, Raspberry Pi’s have an inherent flaw as they are all installed from images from the Raspberry Pi Foundation - they all come with the same network name and user name. Very few people will change this! If you spoof mDNS packets and send them to the Raspberry Pi using your public IP address then your router will forward them to the Raspberry Pi with no questions asked. When you flood the Pi with mDNS packets then you will cause a denial of service attack on the Pi’s Ethernet adapter, which in turn will cause the USB bus to fail as it is really a USB to Ethernet adapter (built in). And the easiest way to get your public IP is simply to use Signalling System 7... Merely using the baseband backdoor and lifting your WiFi password directly from any phone connected to your WiFi would allow an attacker within your WiFi range to connect to your WiFi using their equipment. It’s then as simple as typing “IP” into Google to get you public IP address. My advice would be to only use WiFi with devices that don’t have basebands. e.g. Tablets. No phones!
