Great vid, very helpful. Can the uprights be cut as I'm using them to brick up a fireplace and want to avoid disturbing the jams?

What would you do in the case if you only need to extend out say 100mm and tie into the existing wall. I need to fill the gap between the existing garage door opening and the new garage door is 100mm narrower. Should I stick with timber instead or will this method still work?

hi can you use wall starter kit on stone wall were stone height and width is diffrent (making the wall bumpy and un even) if you cant what is best method to tie brick to stone thanks

Could you use these but only add half bricks to allow for a door liner to be screwed to the full brick would close it down too much and I didn’t want to knock the bricks out to create a 45 start many thanks.

Do you need to put any DPC.between the starter kit and existing wall .????

Hi 🙂, as a homeowner who's about to have an extension done I'm loving the video's, it's great to see quality builders in action who really know their stuff 😉. I'm about to brick up an old doorway that was roughly cut initially to open up. The bricking up is eventually going to support a couple of RSJ's to open up a room. Do I need to tooth in the bricks, which is going to be difficult to do due to the roughly cut bricks, or can I just use a wall starter kit ?? I was going to try and do a combination of both to try and make it as strong as possible 🤔. Cheers.

Hi Tiger GKW thanks for your kind words, It’s always better to tooth in were possible, but sometimes it’s not always possible. If you are load bearing Steels on the new brick work the engineer should be able to give you further advice. All steels need engineers detail with padstone detail and then passed off by local building control 👍 thanks for watching

Build With A&E - thanks for the quick reply and advice. I'm doing this well before the build starts and SE's and BC get involved, as I need to to make the house secure as it's an external doorway. I'll just have to risk it, worse case scenario is pull the bricks back out when the time comes for structural calcs and RSJ's. Cheers 🙂

Hi there, great video, watching this as I am attaching a porch to an old stone wall cottage that has rendering so unable to cut into the wall? Can I use these and if so what's the best method, please. The porch to outside measurements is 2m wide x 2.4 High.

From the information you have provided, I would say yes. Providing the surface you are fixing to is solid and fairly flat, you will be fine to use this system. Obviously this is based on the information you have given and I haven't actually seen it. Each job / application is unique, so it's always best to get a professional to have a look. Hope this helps. All the best, John 👷🏼‍♂️

Hi, would you typically add a strip of damp course proof behind the starter kit directly on the existing wall, or would you place it on top of the starter kit as the block goes in?

Do you have a video of cutting a doorway in a brick wall

Hi Gavin The next time we do a doorway cut out, we will film that process. I think Stu from Best Bricky has done one, great tradesmen check him out on KZbin 👍

Would you cut a cavity between the wall starters to meet the cavity on the new wall and stop any damp passing through the existing wall and into the house. I see a lot of mixed methods with this, some people doing it and some not but I rarely hear of any issues when it hasn’t been done. I’m curious of how necessary this is.

Hi Richard, If you were using a wall starter kit for an external wall, then it would be a good idea to run a vertical damp in behind the kit. This would help to eliminate any damp transfering through. The wall starter installed in this video was for an internal wall, hence why we went straight to brick. Hope this helps. All the best, John 😊

Of course you run a vertical DPC ..the mortar joint is subject to deterioration driving rain etc poor sand/cement mix/ lack of water inhibitors in the mix ... The cavity is fixed without cavity closers by most jobbing brickies on pricework or claiming to be " tradesmen" having watched similar videos . The external wall is best done by toothing in the brickwork ..these guys don't even join the starter strips ( they lock together ) so have to imagine the hole in the wall on the inner wall is going to accomodate wood or possibly a steel lintel ..but the prep of the brickwork is NON existing ..all the bricks are spalling n in poor condition ..far better to replace new Brick onto the existing structure ..the joint is only as good as the wall supporting it ..A better verbal explanation from this imagined foreman is required ..compare with industry videos for latest building regs ..that outfit would not ot be doing a place of mine

Rendered walls? I'm guessing strip the render where the wall starter is going to make sure you're drilling brick not mortar.

But what is the actual use of a wall starter kit?
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sir Xenon, A wall starter kit is used to enable a wall to be built perpendicular to an existing wall, without the need to tooth in. It can be used on both internal and external walls. Hope this helps. All the best, John 😊

@@BuildWithAE forgive me but what do you mean by "tooth in"
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
If you tooth one wall to another, you remove a brick from every other course on the existing wall. The new (perpendicular) wall would then be built up with bricks, of which every other course bridges into the holes in the existing wall. Hopefully this makes sense 😁 All the best, John 😊

My advice ? Ask building control ..too many well intentioned videos creating more questions than answers ..Shame no explanation of closing cavities on the external wall ..the importance of water inhibitors in the cement / dabo mix . Didn't explain how many brick courses between the metal fixers that sit inside the new brickwork .. the only thing reaching the New structures cavity on this job is s brick width of potentially porus pointing . BTW the wall fixers SLIDE together at point of installation unless they have to be separated eg by a beam/lintel etc .. the very least would be to use a Stihl saw to cut a deep groove to right of the external wall tie n double fold it in. The BEST way is to tooth the external brickwork ..it looks more like one structure ..n don't even get me started on expansion joints ..love the state of the brickwork at life's end they were proposing to build a new wall onto ..that required an explanation to avoid thoughts of doubt. Still ..that's how so many ppl learn these days..from videos .
