How to install a water butt

I don't understand why the connector pipe has to be a maximum of 500 mm between rain down pipe and water butt. Mine has to be 200 mm longer to go around a corner. Will it still work or is there a hydrodynamic issue??

The only issue is that the connector pipe supplied is only 500mm long. I don’t think B&Q sell longer pipes. You can get longer pipes on eBay or from garden centres who sell pond supplies.

I guess we need to avoid any sag in the diverter pipe? Hence they suggest to use rigid overflow pipes as extenders?

Can the diverter be switched back to drain pipe mode with a valve, if the water butt starts overflowing?

You don't need to divert the flow manually.Once the barrel is full the water, it overflows inside the diverter and runs on down the lower section of the down pipe and to the drain 👍

If the waterbutt is full, the diverter kit makes sure the water goes to the drain so the waterbutt will never over flow 😊

Put a teaspoon full of cooking oil in the barrel when full it stops lava fly

​@@MrBoltonleeVery true. The one shown here is the older Sankey butt, there are significant gaps in the lid where the handle is, and where the locating clips are. The newer ones by Ward have better fitting lid, but some bugs still find their way in. Thanks for the tip about the oil, didn't know that 👍.

When the barrel is full the diverter diverts the water back down the down pipe to the bottom drain.

If the gutter downpipe is overflowing at the top then you may have a blocked drain or soakaway.

The rain diverter is hollow and continues down the original drainpipe. They should have shown this. When it rains the water sticks to the side of the drainpipe due to waters surface tension and it is this water that is colected in the water butt. When the water butt is full, and the water backs up the hose pipe, it "overflows" into the original drainpipe.

My pipe.is round no square so it it a universal type one for round and one for square just asking

Mmm...divert the rain water into the tank. How the water get into the tank with the connected hose if you don’t install a diverting unit where you turn the knob to divert the water tank or let it run through when the tank his full. This set up the rain just run through to the drain. 😳

You don't need to divert the flow manually. Surface tension means the rainwater doesn't fall straight down the down pipe- it flows down the inner walls of the pipe. It then flows outwards along the pipe to the barrel .Once the barrel is full the water " over flows" the inside "saucer" in the diverter and runs on down the lower section of the down pipe and to the drain or soak away. It's very clever and has no taps or switches. Just water filling then backing up, then overflowing back into the original downpipe.

Whilst water captured in a water butt is perfect for watering your garden, it cannot be guaranteed as safe to drink. This is due to: The water butt is not sterile and will be potentially harbour insects and vegetable matter (eg leaves). The water will probably arrive via a roof, this may be dirty or have bird waste contaminant. Water can become stagnant, especially if unused for a period such as during hot weather.
