All is fine and dandy..professional and such...until 1 week later you discover ...You cannot pull out the air filter easily for cleaning( it slides out to the right when facing the unit...which is now effectively blocked by the window jamb)
@dclaet11352 жыл бұрын
I noticed the same thing.
@bobkilla43010 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial. Although cheaper (and probably less of a hassle to maintain) to get a window a/c, plus this solution doesn't seem too difficult for someone like me who is a novice at woodwork, I don't think I can do anything permanent to my place I'm renting.
@dabmane7 жыл бұрын
This is a pretty high quality install, looking at all the other ones on youtube (and the ones i've done myself). Nice work!

We just used double sided tape to secure the plexiglass. Looks great!

You did this as a pro, which you are. I will use dome ideas when I build my rig. Thanks
@mikem96746 жыл бұрын
Im surprised with your skills you did not make it a double pane plexiglass, especially since it is a semi-permanent install. Nothing insulates better than a pocket of air. That's how you can stay warm in a house of ice in the arctic(igloos) they work by air insulation.

I just watch the video, great tutorial, thank you. When building your platform, did you simply use 1/2 MDF? I could not tell if you made a special cut to make the platform fit the the window sill or of you build it out of layers of 1/2" Thanks!
@wildwest5d58 жыл бұрын
Hi, 3/4" MDF is the thickness of the platform & we attached a 3/4"" x 2" piece under the front edge to give a slight downward tilt to the back side. Our window frame is just under 3/4" high. Depending on how high your window frame is, will determine how thick a piece you will need to add to get that slight tilt so that any water drains outside and not in your house.
@wildwest5d56 жыл бұрын
3/4" MDF with another piece of 3/4" inside under the platfrom to account for the sliding window groove height of about 3/4".
@pattimorey77662 жыл бұрын
Q: how did you stick the small width of riser board to the platform piece before placing it on the sill? Also, how is the platform able to tilt slightly downward outside when it is screwed in flush with the sill? Doesn't that put stress on the screws?
@tanawest1542 жыл бұрын
I shimmed the board from the inside of the house so it was a little higher. Then that helped it to tilt downward on the outside. That way no condensation will drip towards the inside of the house.
@tanawest1542 жыл бұрын
There was no stress on the screws. Maybe a carpenter friend could watch this and help?

Cool but how do you clean the filter? It slides out to the right if facing front of ac, yours is blocked by return and caulked in place.
@Airbender24B2 жыл бұрын
Did he use silicone adhesive or silicone caulk?
@AK-ky3ou4 жыл бұрын
How do you remove the ac filter? There is no room to slide to the right tucked up to that return.

Great,.. now, all I need are the tools 😖
@lass-inangeles75649 жыл бұрын
+jalcaraz612 You only need a table saw for cutting the wood ledge. Also cuts plexiglass. You don't need an angle grinder or a Miter saw, since wood frame on plexiglass is totally unnecessary. Stick plexiglass into opening. Seal up edges. Done.
@nightstringers6 жыл бұрын
Now how do you take the unit out to clean once a year ? Looks great BTW . thanks for your video.

our ac is broken so i wanna buy one of these for my lil tiny room. Walmart has one for 120 great reviews, The problem is my window is a sliding one and not one that goes up and down so I cant use the accoridan thing it comes with to seal it. I guess I'll have to do something like this which is pushing me away from buying the unit which also keeps making me sleep like shit
@reedallidap71736 жыл бұрын
I like the base part but the frame for plexiglass was so overkill. Who has all those cutting tools just lying around?

Where do you live? I am in Los Angeles, Ca 90275, can you install this AC unit in this area?
@dongdonger96099 жыл бұрын
Best solution I've seen so far. Is the unit attached to the base at all? I'm a little nervous having this on the 2nd story in Southern California.
@lass-inangeles75649 жыл бұрын
+Dong Donger Get good renters or home insurance. Also have a Licensed contractor install so you are off the hook for liability. And if you are renting, have landlord permission IN WRITING.
@wildwest5d58 жыл бұрын
+Dong Donger I did put a screw through the bottom front leg bar that goes through the MDF board and into the windo sill. It's been three years and all 3 units ( different sizes) that I had installed by my son are still rock solid!

@sandrahennessy14210 жыл бұрын
That was great! Would you just use additional screws for the support if your using a larger unit?
@d.l.255310 жыл бұрын
Probably not. The units are usually designed to just hang out of an unlatched window held on by just tape, so they're fairly well balanced, but it never hurts.
@esqueue8 жыл бұрын
+Sandra Hennessy This would be a horrible idea for a larger ac. you would also need an upper brace that secures the top part of the ac to the sides.

Very well done video and very complete in all the necessary steps needed to do a professional installation. Tighter editing could reduce video length by 50% but no big deal. You worry me not using a push stick and guard on blade and also firing 1-1/2” brads so close to your fingers but that is your choice. 10+ on video quality and installation workmanship. Thank you for sharing, certainly will help do my project.

How can I do this 80ft up?
@davidwest36698 жыл бұрын
+nick matalski I would make sure the platform is well anchored to the window sill and then place the ac unit on the platform and somehow anchor it with a few 3" screws through the platform and into the window sill. That way even if the window frame was broken somehow the AC unit would still be anchored down. Some people fill the upper void above the unit with plywood or plexiglass or something else that can be fixed in place with silicone or screws.
@MGWorldwide8 жыл бұрын
if we were doing this less high up, but perhaps felt our window frame was old and weakish, would you suggest 3 screws to bolt the platform down as well?
@davidwest36698 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 3 long 3" screws is what I used to anchor the platform.

Great job, but it would be easier to buy and install a casement unit that fits these types of windows.
@stoolie108 жыл бұрын
don't make this harder than it is. just set the unit as they did and fill in the hole with any kind of wood or plexiglass, if you have it. not looking for beauty just some cooling.
@wildwest5d56 жыл бұрын
the only reason I used plexiglass was to try and make the whole thing not quite so unpleasing to the eye. Let's face it, some people in my neighborhood probably think that anytime you place an AC unit in your window that you are lowering the value of everyone else's home.

I cant do this because I am renting and don't know how long I'll be staying, so its a lot of work and money invested for something that might only last me one summer. So I have to sit here and bake in 100degree weather wtf. I am surprised there are not more portable window units that can be installed in slider windows. Its not some engineering feat that you need the geniuses at nasa to tackle, Ill tell you this economy has gone to hell. Just mass produce for the majority of people.

+US VS them wethepeople Actually it does. Just after I purchased the house it started havving trouble in the middle of July! The compay I was insured with said it would take a couple of weeks to fix the AC. Well, I didn't want to fry for 2 weeks so I purchased 3 ac units. Since then my AC has acted up several times and boy was I glad to have backup. The 3 AC units can literally cool my whole 1400 sqr ft house to 72 degrees and for not much more money paid out to the power company. I do have peace of mind, knowing that I'll not fry as long as the power company is getting power to my house. Boy do I wish I could get off the Grid!
