The problem i had was the aluminum screen tearing/ cutting as i was installing the cord with the roller. It took me a few trys and wasted screen before i got one that came out decent.

Excellent presentation; but you should mention that spline comes in at least 3 thicknesses. On my first attempt I wound up trying to pound an oversized spline into the groove using a hammer.

We grew up with metal screens in our windows. We never had to replace them and they kept insects out. They also protected the windows when we cut grass and kicked a rock against the screens. They creased but did not break. Unlike the nylon mesh screens. All you have to do is look at them wrong and they have holes. My dad replaced all of his windows and they came with nylon screens. He swapped them for aluminum mesh. Say what you will buy aluminum mesh will still be standing when the nylon has fallen apart. With anything when you assemble it you have to be careful not to damage it. The first few you do may not turn out as well. But after you do 12 or 13 you become a expert! Great vid and glad some one is showing aluminum screens some love!

The duct tape can be used to hold the screen frame to the table so that I will not move when installing the spline.

I like using aluminum screens for the simple fact you can recycle them. As the Black plastic or whatever you may call them are non recyclable. Think of our future and not for yourself.

Use fiberglass, not aluminum screen. The aluminum is maddening to work with and you'll be pricking your fingers so get ready with the paper towels!

Mitre cut the screen, then trim it as close the the outer edge of the track as possible. roll in the mesh on one side first, dont try and to it with the spline the spline comes later. Also you need to stop the screen from moving, I use clamps at the top and bottom to hold mesh into position. this technique shown here works fine with little screens, but when you have to do a door it wont work at all. I cut the mesh to about 3 mm excess on the outer track, then mitre the corners. Roll in top and bottom of the door with mesh then add spline. Never try to roll in the spline like this. It wont work for larger windows or doors. If you add too much tension it will pull in like an hour glass shape and wont fit. Do about 300 a day of all sorts. Give this video about a 2/10 as it doesnt explain about the tension nor the tearing effect.

Thank you, Gary Reid. I have a door screen that has part of one side which has torn away from the frame, but the entire screen surface is undamaged. Is there a way to apply enough tension to the screen to get it to move over and be re-rolled into the groove?

You are absolutely correct. I started laughing in the very beginning with all the tools. That rag is needed for the blood and sweat that are going to go into doing this.

This job is very difficult, and there are a lot of things that can go wrong. I discovered how easy it is to tear the aluminum screen while creasing it, and how hard it is to keep the screen straight in the process. The end result looks appalling. These instructions also breezily refer to "tensioning" the screen without providing any details on how it might work. I find this video to be disappointing and misleading.

In case you're not rich or don't have the time for the proper tools: 1) Get any old roll of screen that will fit your frame. 2)Carefully use a Flathead screwdriver to indent the screen into the frame's groove, careful not to damage the screen. 3) Reuse the old rubber strip if it's still in 1 long piece. 4) Use a rounded tool , for me it was the back end of an adjustable wrench, to press the rubber strip back into the grooves.

I went to Lowe's for some aluminum screen and the size I needed (all 3 rolls) were crushed in the middle, basically unusable. The employee seemed to care less. I stopped going to Lowe's for reasons like this.

You can get typical fiberglass or aluminum screen.....or even copper mixed with another metal screen. You can get super fine screen for small no-see-ums or normal sized screen for most common sized insects. The choice is yours. The metal screen tend to give longer life and tougher if they get bumped but if it's not in a high traffic area and not getting a lot of sun light you can go for fiberglass. Even if it is in direct sun light it should still last many years as long as no one is pushing it or hitting it with sharp objects. Feel free to google search it for more answers and in-depth. That's what I did to answer your question. I know very little about this type of thing lol.

Depends on the kind if you want a fancy no-see-um mesh screen they run $25+ depending on length and with but for your typical screen it can be cheaper. Do a Google search and you will see the prices lol.

"Flat head" refers to a screw with a tapered head that is flush with the surface when installed. Flat head screws can be driven with slot, crosspoint (Phillips or similar), Robertson or even Allen drivers as applicable. You are using a slot screwdriver.
