How to Install an Air Vent Grommet in a Drum

This is one way to install an air vent grommet in a drum. This comes in handy when refurbishing old drum kits with the grommet style air vent/badge. This kit is a old Slingerland drum set I re-wrapped for a customer.

I gave you a "like" rating, but with reservation. I would have used a brass grommet that you can buy from most Ace hardware stores. Secondly, the split sides creates a final look that resembles exploding metal shrapnel. This look is a turn-off for drum lovers who would rather have an undetectable install process for a replaced grommet. My method to install is to NOT saw the grommet, except to only shorten the length so it protrudes about 1/8" beyond the shell thickness. Then, just use a large, round headed screw or toggle bolt, and hammer this into the grommet end on the inside of the drum. In other words, you use the round - headed bolt like a metal die to stamp against the raw edge of the grommet until it flattens out. End result looks like factory install. :)

If you are looking for the neatly rolled look on the inside and out, look up the guy on here that uses a ball bearing. This is good but no grommet looks this way from the factory.

haha yeah... my brother caught a knot in some oak once that threw his thumb directly onto the blade of a table saw. It was gross. There was a perfectly straight line of blood up his chest and face, across the ceiling and down the far wall. None in his eyes though as he was wearing his goggles. We put the guard back on the saw, and he wasn't allowed to use it ever again.

Great job man !..Extremely helpful..I'm restoring a vintage Ludwig kit and the one thing that worried me the most was having to do this.. Now i will use this procedure to install my grommets..Any thoughts on removing the grommet without damaging the shell ?..

I'm sorry, but this is not correct method, and as a vintage Slingerland collector I hate to see it. First, you should have used 2 pieces of blue painter's tape on each side of the air hole- to position and hold the badge in place on the front of the drum. Then- you should have used that dremmel tool to cut the grommet tube to proper length. (sticking up no more than approx 1/8' up from the inside of the shell) You should NOT have cut a cross pattern into the grommet tube. Bending it and hammering it down that way, basically forces the inner walls of that grommet tube- into a sort of square shape. And looks awful inside. See the Chicago Drum Co. grommet installation video for a proper method.
