An OBD dongle is an easy to install and very handy tool to give you some key information of your EV including State of Health, State of Charge and battery temperature plus a whole lot more!
NOTE: it is not recommended to leave it plugged in all the time. To quote from the manufacturer;
'As it uses low energy Bluetooth, you can leave the device plugged in from days to 3 weeks depending on the battery condition. However it's always recommended to remove it when it's not in use.'

Thanks for the informative video. Have just ordered one from Amazon Au as I live in NZ. $57 delivered. Will share my BSoH when I get it. 2018 ipace se imported from UK 2 years ago.

Seems my earlier reply got lost, so to update. I fitted the dongle and downloaded the app. My result for bsoh is 96%! Car is a 2018 SE Jag Ipace, 45 k Kms. Mostly charged on 16A granny charger at home overnight. I normally charge up to 80%, but increase to 100% before a long journey. Have had the BMS updated last month. Also my dealer replaced the front loom which is prone to damage under high acceleration. Very happy with my car. Nothing to touch it here in NZ, unless you want a Musky!

So I have just taken a look and it states SOH 78% which I find hard to believe. Not sure on everyone else’s range but I get a real 240 miles on eco with a max of 260 on the stated range. Confused !

Doesn’t sound right. I believe it is just an estimate and battery temperature plays a part so you might want to try again. Only really accurate way is to get JLR to do a proper test of each module as I had done.

@@electricfocus1710 did they charge you much or is it a full hour of labour. Also what true range are you getting ?

No charge, I asked for it to be done when it went in (for the second try) to do the recall update. First they said it couldn’t be done but when I questioned this they then said it could. Average range I get is around 225 to 235 over the year but as low as 190 on the motorway in minus temperatures and up to 290 in warm weather. I’m talking about on long journeys here….

@@electricfocus1710 thanks that’s really helpful and I will ask for them to get this done while it’s in for the MOT 👍

from the layout it looks like the same app that Bjorn Nyland uses on lots of cars, very useful anyway, thank you do you also use ABRP trough that dongle ?
@electricfocus1710
@electricfocus1710 Жыл бұрын
Correct it’s the same app as Bjorn. Yes I’ve used ABRP with it although not a big fan of the Sat Nav interface on ABRP in the car (Apple car play) it seems a bit glitchy and not that keen on the layout.

Hi , thank you for your video. I both an I Pace and checked the health of the battery the same way. My question is if you have a new car what can you see like battery health %? Because we can read that from 90kWh we can youse 95% in reality. What can we see if check a new car in % health of battery?
@electricfocus1710
@electricfocus1710 2 ай бұрын
Hi, you would see 100% as it’s measuring the state of health of the usable capacity (84.7 kWhs).

Best way to use this to check your SoH is to charge to 100% and do a reading.

Hi, Do you know if this turns itself off after say 30 minutes or if not could it lead to 12v battery drain? I thought I had read some of these do not turn off and can indeed drain your 12v battery?

Hi I don’t believe it does and thanks for raising as on review I said once it’s in you can leave it there. However it’s not recommended to leave it permanently plugged in. If you use your car daily it will probably be ok but it states in the blurb that whilst it should be fine even for a few weeks with a good battery due to the low power it draws it’s not recommended. I’ve just removed that comment as it could be misleading so again thanks for raising. I’ve also made reference in the notes to this.

Doesn’t matter how the battery is at moment of check? I meant if have to be 100”%?

No it doesn’t matter what the state of charge is. However I’m not sure how accurate it is but gives you an idea.

Hi, I can’t get it to connect to the Bluetooth on my phone 😟 is there some special trick to this?
@electricfocus1710
@electricfocus1710 9 ай бұрын
Hi, if you have an IOS device you need to follow these instructions; ‘When using with iOS devices (iPhone or iPad), no need to & do NOT pair with "VEEPEAK" through the Bluetooth menu. Please start the app, make connection setting and directly connect in the App. If you have tried to pair (resulting in a Not Supported error), please restart your iOS device and follow the instructions.’ Hope that helps.

Your state of health (93.5%) is suspiciously close to the max usable of 94%, is that what the reading is do you think?
@electricfocus1710
@electricfocus1710 Жыл бұрын
Hi, It seems to be a degradation reading as it says ‘degradation 7%’ on ABRP however I’m still trying to find out how accurate it is. I think the battery needs to be at optimum temperature (21 degrees c) for the reading to be accurate. It said 93% when I first connected up and now says 93.5%.

@@electricfocus1710 What's your mileage, and have you done a lot of DC charging? Do you mind if I ask is that dongle and app able to read fault codes, and read live data from all modules in the i-Pace?
@electricfocus1710
@electricfocus1710 Жыл бұрын
Hi, just under 28,000 miles. I mostly charge at home to 80% and DC charge maybe once every couple of months. Yes you can check fault codes with the dongle but no it doesn’t monitor every module, just gives you an overall for the battery. Hope that helps!
@martyndavies1482
@martyndavies1482 Жыл бұрын
@@electricfocus1710Thanks, not that I'd need to read fault codes, its a JLR vehicle after all ;-) My i-Pace has just over 22k, similar charging to you, and recently it showed a range of 282mls at 100%, not believing it could do that, but shows the car thinks the battery is in good shape still.

I would be very wary of plugging in an OBD of this type and an associated app unless it was certified completely virus and trojan free by a reputable supplier as this potentially is a perfect way for malware to be delivered to your car’s system. There are a number and growing instances of EVs losing control due to hacked on board software. Think about it!
