Problem: Illegal command is when we type a wrong name, or the executable is not in the current folder and there is no path to the folder. Solution: Switch to the folder of the executable with the cd command and/or change the current drive letter, or use the path enviroment variable with the path command.

+Rilnator ive just figured it out I had the illegal command too! do not put your games in any subfolder say for instance if you have doom unzip it so it is in its own folder then just drop it into your c: drive and type cd DOOM exactly as the folder is named(do not know if upper and lower case makes a difference), then type DOOM.exe . this was driving me nuts but I have just got it working now. hope this works for you too, best of luck with it

If you have - Unable to access CD Drive. Just do: mount e e:/ -t cdrom mount c c:/dos c: cd heroes heroes.exe E for cdrom drive. My game is heroes.

Thanks for the tutorial! One question - is it OK to have more than one game in the DOS GAMES folder? I presume one would just load the application file, so there shouldn't be any confusion? Regards, Metalhaid

No limitation. But if there is only one folder with many games inside we hope that all file names are different, else we have a problem. A file can be overwriten with a file with the same name. So if only a text file is missing like a read.me text file it is not a very big problem. The best is to put all games in an own folder inside the game folder.

thanks.. But why do we need DOSShell for? in another video, they use both. The DOSShell ask me for the icon of the file.. but i cant open the file and thus cant create the icon.. So you saying i should be using the DOSBOX command to open this .exe file and from there i can use DOSShell to run it

There is no registry inside DOS/DOSBOX. That means DOS does not know if a DOS application is installed or not. So the installation process of a DOS application/or DOS game only have to make folders and to extract a packed archiv and nothing more. After a DOS application or DOS game is installed one time it can be easy copy to an other PC to run without a second installation. The configuration file of a DOS game is mostly located inside the game folder. Some config files are text files with *.ini or *.cfg file extension and some other are only in binär form. I always look inside files with a text viewer.

I downloaded King's Quest 7, but there are more than one file with "application" on it. Though I extracted it to DosGames on my hard drive, none of the file names that say "application" will work. It says "illegal command". I tried using DOSBox with the game used as an example on this KZbin video and it worked. Suggestions?

I try to help, but i need more information on what is going wrong. Do you mount a folder with the mount command on the DOSBOX command prompt? Or do you edit the configuration file of Dosbox for to place your mount command at the end of the file in the [autoexec] section? Do you switch the drive to the mounted drive letter example with c: and return key? Do you see the DOS game on the DOSBOX command prompt if you type the dir command?

I'm having a huge problem with all this. All the DOS games, once loaded, are completely hidden - they can't be found anywhere on my PC - even if I tell it to show hidden files. They are currently tasking up about 30gb of diskspace - yet can't be deleted because I can't find them. I even thought that DOSBOX might have created its own Win95 partition where it's put the games, but for the life of me I can't find it. It's really annoying and I'm at the point of of just scrubbing my hard drive and reloading everything. Can someone tell me how to find these files and delete them?

Ansi.sys driver with ansi escape seqences in text form also for printer. But the driver is much to large for colors only in the framebuffer. I use my own executable.
