Very good video. You showed your audience using the ring terminals while everyone else used the alligator clips. Thanks. 👍😊

I've watched 15 videos before I got to yours. All I need now is a garage. I have a 2001 Mazda Miata, great little sports car but I don't drive it as much since my husband died. My mechanic gave me Battery Tender 800mA & assumed I'd know how to use it. I do not of course, watched your video, best description by far. Hope I can get it jumped, the battery is new.

Some people suggest disconnecting the negative terminal completely. If I do that where will the negative on the tender attach to on the battery? My main concern is the battery overcharging possibly starting a fire.

How many watts does 5A Battery Tender has? I have the same model and I plan to use a transformer (110v-220v) Can I use a 50W transformer for this?

@@fedde5920 it really depends how low your battery is, if they vehicle has been sitting a while it’s good to just leave it sit on the charger for a day or two, but if you drive or use the vehicle regularly then it should be a few hours and then the charging light should stop and turn solid green.

Very helpful! I bought a battery tender at the advice of the AAA guy, after my battery died while I was out of town for 2 months. Bought one from Amazon which came with useless instructions (in about five languages). Now it all seems a bit clearer, though Im wondering when you’d use the alligator clips?
@VinnieT
@VinnieT Жыл бұрын
You would use the alligator clips if you had the battery out of the vehicle and sitting on the bench. Or if the battery is still in the vehicle and is dead, then you can temporarily clip the alligator clips onto the battery to try and charge it up.
@succulentqueen7737
@succulentqueen7737 8 ай бұрын
Oh so do you basically use the alligator clips for a short time when you dont need to close the hood?
@VinnieT
@VinnieT 8 ай бұрын
Yes correct, usually a temporary solution, and some people have multiple batteries for different vehicles and things sitting on their work bench, and the alligator clips allow you to just clamp the battery tender onto the terminals temporarily. (Just like when you use jumper cables on a car)
@kenplatt1391
@kenplatt1391 5 ай бұрын
Clips would be used if you do not want to attach your tender in a more permanent fashion. But, you attach them to the battery terminals as if you were to jump start your car.

You should remove the clamps from the battery posts for thorough cleaning.

Your video was easy to understand and enough to know this won’t work for someone who doesn’t park in a garage with a power cord plugged into the car. Not practical if your car is outside in rain and snow but just gets less use than every day. That’s our problem in that we don’t drive as much anymore and our batteries are constantly dying and need to be jumped. It seems the motor industry could figure out how to prevent this without these constant worries. What good are these huge vehicles if they won’t start if you don’t use then for a week.. ? all because of a stupid battery. They can start a flashlight after not using them for a year at least but not a car after a week to start the ignition? And they are huge batteries to begin with. It seems like a design flaw to me! 😂

I have a 2023 Ranger with 2500 miles. Parked it for 2 months, dead battery. Dealer said it's because all the electronics continue to work and drain from the battery. I have now turned off what I could, like wi fi. I will hook my tender to the battery terminals, run the connector out from the bumper. Next time I leave, All I have to do is plug in the tender to the connector and plug the 110 into the wall socket. Mine will be outside also so I will use an outside safe outlet. Need to be sure that everything is placed where it won't interfere with closing the hood.
@kenplatt1391
@kenplatt1391 5 ай бұрын
Actually the tender will be placed under the hood, away from the battery and the 110 plug will be run through the front end of the car.

Good question, I haven’t tested that, I would give the company a call and ask. If I had to guess, it probably would work. But if you have to leave it outside, I would recommend trying to cover it up with a tarp or something.

I read that it's not a good idea to connect the negative charger cable directly to the battery negative terminal, but rather to a ground location somehwhere on the vehicle.
@VinnieT
@VinnieT Жыл бұрын
I’ve done it both ways and none caused any issues, I’m sure it would be fine either way. Some older cars do not have a separate grounding terminal, I’ve also seen some people make them at a specific location that works best for them. Both ways work, it’s your choice 👍🏼
@smuook1969
@smuook1969 10 ай бұрын
For newer vehicles, it is better idea to go to chassis ground. Most have variable voltage control circuits. If you read your tender instructions it will say chassis ground. If you read your owners manual for jump start it will say chassis ground. There is zero chance of issues that way. It may be fine by using negative terminal but why risk it?

That's what the manual on my battery tender states. But I'm thinking why that instead just of the actual ground terminal lol.

Both will work, your negative battery terminal is connected to the body of your vehicle, they’re both practically the same ground. This is a common known thing on cars, most mechanics can tell you this as well.

Goes in Float mode not trickle

Float voltage is the voltage at which a battery is maintained after being fully charged. It’s basically built in logic that senses when a battery is full, and then it will begin to the float mode.

i got a 50ma draw on my battery and the car is DEAD after ~7 days ...
@VinnieT
@VinnieT Жыл бұрын
Have you figured out the issue yet? Any other info would help diagnose the issue.
@ACommenterOnYouTube
@ACommenterOnYouTube Жыл бұрын
@@VinnieT Yes i did. 50ma drain per hr x 24 hrs = 1.2ah drain in 24 hrs. 1.2ah x 7 days = ~8.5 ah drain after 7 days. I have a 42AH battery in my trunk, a lot smaller than the average size battery. So 42ah - 8ah = 34AH after 7 days. Car has an inline 6 motor which is pretty heavy to crank over. So after 7 days i lost 20% of the battery capacity. I drive the car around for maybe 5 miles then park it and she sits for another 6 days. Now, that ~5 mile drive is not enough time for the alternator to fully charge the battery back to 42 ah ... So she sits another 6 days and looses another ~9 ah ... So now a ~36ah battery drops another 9ah to = 17 ah which is less than 50% capacity from a fully charged 42AH battery and not enough to crank the engine ... Normal draw from the average car is ~30ma AND with the factory alarm system adds another 20ma so now it has a 50ma constant draw to it. If this car was daily driven we would not have this conversation. But since she is only driven once per week and that drive is not long enough to charge the battery back up, she will be dead in another 6-7 days. The fix is either a factory size battery which i won't do OR drive the car more often which i won't OR take longer drives which i can do OR what i did was added a battery tender that keeps the battery charged all the time. So there was nothing wrong, its just a normal draw but from a smaller battery which will die faster than an oem size battery.
@VinnieT
@VinnieT Жыл бұрын
Yeah I always recommend just using the OEM parts for the car so it will operate correctly. Otherwise once you start modifying things that’s when you run into issues. But I’m glad that you got this figured out. 👍🏽
@ACommenterOnYouTube
@ACommenterOnYouTube Жыл бұрын
@@VinnieT It operates correctly and the draw is 100% normal. Its just that the battery is smaller and it was relocated to the trunk for weight saving and to free up space in the engine bay. If this car was daily driven, we would not be having this discussion.
