While I was working on my custom brake fabrication I found Cronetec. They sell CNC manufactured brake conversion parts for first gen YFS200 Blasters (88-02).
This kit is awesome really. No welding needed and no grinding if you don't want to with a second left side footpeg. It can be installed in a few hours or faster once you know what you're doing.
Having searched for solutions to convert a cable pull rear brake system to hydraulic and built my own conversion previously I really wanted to try this kit. Plus this system will work with the original carrier housing. No need to search out an expensive second gent (03-06) carrier for a swap.
The Quad: This kit will work with Blasters from 1988 to 2002. (Gen 1 Blasters) In this video is my 2001.
The parts I used are from Cronetec: cronetec.com/
Update: The full kit is available these days. With that you don't need to search out the parts below. Just bolt and go. Keep it up Cronetec! This is simply an awesome way to get more out of my Blaster.
Cronetec is currently offering a 'Trio' pack which is all the parts I ordered. cronetec.com/s.... the parts are: Master Bracket, Pedal Adapter and Caliper Bracket.
Other items you'll need:
- Rotor and rotor hub for an 88-02 Blaster from Ebay if you don't still have it. (They are different than an 03-06 but you can convert a newer one to work.)
- Brake pedal. I used a Yamaha Warrior pedal which is easy to find on Ebay but the ideal is a Second Gen Blaster pedal. (03-06). These are tougher to find. I had to go for OEM at Partszilla.com for one. If you use a Warrior pedal you'll need to make some simple linkage. Yamaha part is: Yamaha PEDAL, BRAKE Part # 5VM-27211-10-00
Caliper - I used a caliper for an '04 Yamaha Raptor 660. Linked here amzn.to/3CVHFLj. Make sure you get some hydraulic line. The factory lines from the Raptor are what I used. They are a bit long. Ideal length would be 50cm or roughly 20in.
- Another left side foot rest unless you want to grind and cut your existing right foot rest to remove the pedal mount and boot guard. This was an Ebay search as I didn't want to cut into the one I had incase I reused it.

Are you running front disk brakes? Bought mine from a scrap 2004 blaster. I believe the rear 2004 blaster rear hydraulics will fit without much hassle?

Front on this one are still drum. I just did a swap on my most recent Blaster build project on the channel. These rear’s are easy. No fabrication needed. Now that I’ve done a few it take me 15min plus bleeding the lines. It’s a nice kit. One of my upcoming videos will feature another install.

How do you bleed the brakes i order from the same place and lost on how to bleed them

Tons of videos on it but essentially… open the nipple on the brake, depress the brake lever and before you release it close the nipple, then release. Keep repeating and you’ll get the air out. I would say though to do a YT search on reverse bleeding. I’ve found it works quite well if you find you have air bubble that you can’t quite get out. (It’s easy once you see it in a good video. )

It took a little effort but having a good hydraulic rear brake made the quad much more rideable when hitting it hard. I used to pop the front end up all the time trail riding and at that point... there was no way to set it back down. :)

Did you have to grind off the piece where the old brake line was routed?

Mine was already mostly ground off by the previous owner. I didn't look like I would have needed to grind it off though if it had still been there.

Total cost on the conversion with kit?

About $130 for the Cronetec kit on their website, another $20 for the used hydraulic lines, cylinder and caliper on ebay, (You can get it new on amazon for about the same price which Iooking back.. I should have done.) Then another $30 for the pedal from BikeBandit.com OEM. Still works awesome and given the price of quads post Covid still worth it for me with Blaster's going for $1700 - $2700 up here in New England.

@@willyloehman2812 I like these quads for what they are. Fun, simple, light weight, easy to work on and can take a beating. I keep thinking one day I'm going to do a full tear down on this one and do it right. Vitos 240 would be on my short list. Too bad they are getting more expensive.

@@VermontLife always wanted a blaster as a kid, found a good deal on one 1k for a 2006, until it blew up on day 1, to be safe i did top and bottom vito stroker 240 big bore, moto tassanari reeds, toomey pipe, new bearings anything i could find for it. It was an absolute beast but i sold it shortly after cuz it was so loud it was impossible to ride in the burbs (and i was offered more then i put into it) without cops coming, block was smoked out. Sold it to buy a 4 stroke for the noise but the blasters can be such a great deal for what you pay. Quadless now and need a new money pit
