How to Install Cygwin on Windows

Complete Walkthrough on How to Install Cygwin on Windows.
Instructions:
First step: Check the System type of your computer (32 bit or 64 bit).
Second step:
cygwin.com/install.html
Download the Cygwin corresponding to your system type.
Step 3: Install and set-up Cygwin with the packages that you choose.
I recommend the following packages:
gcc-core
make
openssh
ssl
vim
Step 4:
Wait until Cygwin finishes downloading and installing the packages.
Step 5:
Finish and add to environment variables of the computer's system properties.
For 64 bit, add C:\cygwin64\bin; to the end of the environment variables.
What is Cygwin?
The Cygwin tools are ports of the popular GNU development tools for Microsoft Windows. They run thanks to the Cygwin library which provides the POSIX system calls and environment these programs expect.
With these tools installed, it is possible to write Windows console or GUI applications that make use of significant parts of the POSIX API. As a result, it is possible to easily port many Unix programs without the need for extensive changes to the source code. This includes configuring and building most of the available GNU software (including the packages included with the Cygwin development tools themselves) as well as lots of BSD tools and packages (including OpenSSH). Even if the development tools are of little to no use to you, you may have interest in the many standard POSIX utilities provided with the package. They can be used from one of the provided Unix shells like bash, tcsh or zsh, as well as from the standard Windows command shell if you have to for some sad reason.

Works like charm! I installed cygwin mirror files from a different source than yours. Read reviews that some cygwin mirror sites missing files, although it is claimed that mirror sites are regularly checked for complete files. Just fyi for those who may be searching or failing in setting up. Also a word of caution when multi downloading. Thank you very much indeed!

I'm having a very strange issue when trying to run C programs. I wrote a very simple hello world C application that works fine on my desktop computer, but when I try to run it with the Cygwin installation on my laptop it doesn't work. It compiles the program fine, but when I try to run a.exe, the executable just disappears completely. I have no idea why it's doing this.

You've probably already figured it out, but once you click "Edit", just click "Add" and copy and paste the directory path. Don't bother with the semi-colons.

You run the Cygwin setup program again and select more packages to install. This is probably normal, since there are so many Cygwin packages that you probably do not know all the packages you will need at first. Also you can install updates to the packages later.

It's a good question! :-) If you have node.js and npm installed, than you can invoke the following command: npm install -g windosu After installing "sudo", you can use it as you would normally use it in Linux. For example: sudo net session

The file could be hidden: www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/show-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-vista/ OR the file was never created, so you can create the file in the folder.

MicrowaveSam Its not hidden, I unhid all files. I also reinstalled cygwin 4 times and C:\cygwin\home is still empty. How do I generate all the files(including .bashrc) for C:\cygwin\home. Can you point me in the right direction?

Cygwin is supposed to generate some of these files for you, but If it's not inside the folder, then you can create files like ~/.bashrc manually by: touch .bashrc
