So Matt first, I want to say Thank you. I purchased your video series on cb750top end rebuild for my 78. Worked perfectly. Had the carbs redone and did a rewire of the bike with an m.unit blue. I bought new oem switches from Cognito Moto, and everything was working great. I was fine tuning the bike, and it was running pretty good, but I couldn't get the bike to run quite as good as I liked. I still have the oem coils for now and have the Dyna S to put in a bit but when doing the static timing my test light never goes off. I ran my volt meter from the battery to the switch, then to the coils, and then down to the blue and yellow wires from the coils. I have 12.6 volts at every point of testing. What else should I look at? Keep in mind this is in BOTH blue and yellow wires.
@HTMR
@HTMR 9 ай бұрын
I like to disconnect the blue and yellow wires and simply use the continuity *beep* function on my meter instead. That way you don't have to have the ignition or headlight on killing the battery.

@13:58...about the nylon spacers. That's not mentioned anywhere in the installation directions and well...holy shit I think that's pretty relevant information! I wonder if that's why I have power to the coils and no spark still. Do you think that could've cooked the coils?

I spent a few thousand shipping 2 bikes to HVC to have the Dyna S installed. Brad personally delivered the bikes from Nebraska to Ohio...and they only sparked on one side... The magnetic pick up's died when the iginition key was left in the on position. Nick Pastore of Vintage Smoke sells the Dyna S. The Dyna S is not a complete CDI system as I later learned. Now I am installing the Power Dynamo. Wish me better luck. A video on installing the Power Dynamo would be great!

Morning Matt, wondering if you can help. I'm currently restoring a early 90's Zephyr 750. I'm not getting spark, looks like the previous owner found this out and sold it. I've run tests to the best of my ability, and pretty sure its the Cdi/ecu, also maybe the junction box/fusebox. My question is, rather than replace an old broken ecu with an old working ecu. Can I just swap it out for a more modern set up? Cheers NMM

I just put some new Dynatek coils on my 1975 Honda CB750. This video was really helpful, so thanks, Matthew! It's weird, the bike has always run a bit rich but with the new coils the spark plugs look great, maybe even a little on the lean side. Is that because it wasn't generating a strong spark with the old stock coils? It ran fine before, but now it seems to start better and run with a little more pep.

MatthewMCRepair i used the 5 ohm black ones. I did a lot of research and most people said to go with the 5ohm since the stock coils were 5. I also have the dyna ignition that I installed a while ago. Ive been doing some tuning on the carb air screws, hoping I can dial it in. I’m not very skilled at reading spark plugs, so they could be fine. I’ll probably swing by my mechanic this week and have him take a quick look at the plugs to see what he thinks.

So how do you know what plug wire goes to which cylinder? I know you have one coil with 1-4 the other 2-3 but how do you determine the right firering order? I found out recently. It doesn't matter...as in a wasted spark doesn't matter.
@gorflunk
@gorflunk 3 жыл бұрын
It's called wasted spark. Both cylinders (1 & 4 ) fire at the same time from the same coil, one of them fires during its exhaust stroke, the other during its compression stroke and then vice versa. The one that fires during the exhaust stroke is the "wasted spark". The same thing happens in cylinders 2 & 3 when their coil fires.

Hey Matt, great videos. I purchased your CB550 rebuild video awhile back and it helped a ton with my own CB550 rebuild. I also used your video on tank lining to help get things just right. Nice work! I've got a question. I'm running a Dyna S ignition set up with 5ohm Magna coils on my 1974 CB550 along with a Motogadget M-unit blue. My charging system is working correctly, but I can't seem to keep my battery at an appropriate voltage level. When it's at 14V and I turn the ignition key switch "ON" the M-unit app tells me the ignition system alone is using up 5.0 amps = 55W or so. Does that seem like a lot to you? When just at idle that power consumption drops the battery pretty quick. I'm running a Shorai battery if that makes any difference. Thanks for any input
@HTMR
@HTMR 6 жыл бұрын
That current draw seems fine. The CB550 was not designed to provide 14V at idle. Try revving it up to 5k and see what voltage you get. Keep this in mind when cruising around town, you will need to keep the RPM's up in order to keep the battery charged.

Hi Matthew, than you for providing such a great educational video, can you also please explain why there are so many different resistance of the coil what i mean is different ohms of coil, and how to choose between them? and why?
@HTMR
@HTMR 6 жыл бұрын
Best to talk to Dynatech on your application. However, the lower the "Ohm" rating on coil, more power will be consumed resulting in more sparking power. Running lower ohm coils will draw more current, generate more heat, and usually for racing applications. On the other hand, I had a customer buy the wrong ohm coil (higher ohms) and the bike started sputtering at higher RPM's, the spark was simply too weak to ignite the fuel.

If I'm interested in putting a dyna ignition in my 1975 Honda CB750 do I need to replace with Dyna coils as well or will it work with what I have on the bike now, which is all the original stuff. Also, did I hear you correctly when you said your previous Dyna blew up on you? Does that happen often with those units? That's a crazy looking bike by the way. Never seen one done quite like that. Love the color.
@HTMR

Usually with electronic ignition, you can run "hotter" coils for more spark output. The dyna on this bike blew up since once of the coils cracked and shorted the system out.

Just got my Dyna S and I'm debating whether I should install it myself or have a professional do it. From what I've seen it doesn't look that hard to do, there's just a couple things I'm confused about. That black wire with the white stripes that has hanging down the side of the engine, was that a wire that was already hooked up to the bike or did you connect that wire just to test the ignition timing? I know how to use my test light to check my points timing, but not with the Dyna. Was your test light touching the end of that black wire...and what was the other end of that wire hooked up to? (I know the clamp from the test light was hooked up to the battery.) Thanks. There's also that red wire you have to spice into the wire going into the coils, but I think I've got that part figured out.

I set the gap on each side the the rotor with two .015 feeler gauges. My problem is I am unable to line up the marks for the 1-4 and 2-3 coils with the pickup coil as I run out of adjustment room on each pickup. The timing light on the Dyna unit lights up about one or two degrees early for both pickups. The 1-4 pickup on the right wants to be pushed all the way up and the 2-3 pickup on the left all the way down. Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I don't get any spark yet and 2 questions remain unanswered for me. In the installation manual is no mention of the CDI. It only says connect white and black wire to left and right coil and the single red wire to one of the coils orange wire. Obviously I don't have any orange wire. So: Question 1: As far as I understand, I won't need a CDI with the Dynatek ignition. Is that right? If I do need CDI, why does the wire go to the coil and not to the cdi?! Question 2: What is the orange wire in the original loom? Coil to CDI or power supply of coil? Mine have different colors. I really appreciate your help!

I'm a little confused. So the ignition is supposed to fire the coils at two different points? Once at the advance timing marks and once at the firing "F" mark?
@HTMR
@HTMR 7 жыл бұрын
At idle, the ignition fires at "F" mark. Once engine speeds up, the mechanical advance kicks in and advances the timing. The full advance mark is to check at a higher RPM.

Hi Matt, I have a 1989 Ninja ZX10 with an aftermarket Dyna2000 ignition. The ignition box has a red light indicator on it and its not coming on, and im also getting no spark. Drove it one night all fine then the next morning it turns over but wont fire up. Replaced ignition coils and still wont fire up. I did notice that when the red light is on the bike fires up, but that night the red light would blink for a sec instead of stay on and now will not come on at all, can you guess why my bike will not start? Ah, I read the answer online. 1 and 4, and 2 and 3, fire alternately, although only the cylinder ignites that is on the compression stroke. I.e., 1 and 4 plugs fire at the same time but only 1 ignites when it's on its compression stroke.
