I spent a few thousand shipping 2 bikes to HVC to have the Dyna S installed. Brad personally delivered the bikes from Nebraska to Ohio...and they only sparked on one side... The magnetic pick up's died when the iginition key was left in the on position. Nick Pastore of Vintage Smoke sells the Dyna S. The Dyna S is not a complete CDI system as I later learned. So Matt first, I want to say Thank you. I purchased your video series on cb750top end rebuild for my 78. Worked perfectly. Had the carbs redone and did a rewire of the bike with an m.unit blue. I bought new oem switches from Cognito Moto, and everything was working great. I was fine tuning the bike, and it was running pretty good, but I couldn't get the bike to run quite as good as I liked. I still have the oem coils for now and have the Dyna S to put in a bit but when doing the static timing my test light never goes off. I ran my volt meter from the battery to the switch, then to the coils, and then down to the blue and yellow wires from the coils. I have 12.6 volts at every point of testing. What else should I look at? Keep in mind this is in BOTH blue and yellow wires.
@HTMR10 ай бұрын
I like to disconnect the blue and yellow wires and simply use the continuity *beep* function on my meter instead. That way you don't have to have the ignition or headlight on killing the battery.

It's weird, the bike has always run a bit rich but with the new coils the spark plugs look great, maybe even a little on the lean side. Is that because it wasn't generating a strong spark with the old stock coils? It ran fine before, but now it seems to start better and run with a little more pep.

@gorflunk3 жыл бұрын
It's called wasted spark. Both cylinders (1 & 4 ) fire at the same time from the same coil, one of them fires during its exhaust stroke, the other during its compression stroke and then vice versa. The one that fires during the exhaust stroke is the "wasted spark". The same thing happens in cylinders 2 & 3 when their coil fires.

Hi Matthew, than you for providing such a great educational video, can you also please explain why there are so many different resistance of the coil what i mean is different ohms of coil, and how to choose between them? and why?
@HTMR6 жыл бұрын
Best to talk to Dynatech on your application. However, the lower the "Ohm" rating on coil, more power will be consumed resulting in more sparking power. Running lower ohm coils will draw more current, generate more heat, and usually for racing applications. On the other hand, I had a customer buy the wrong ohm coil (higher ohms) and the bike started sputtering at higher RPM's, the spark was simply too weak to ignite the fuel.

Hey Matt, great videos. I purchased your CB550 rebuild video awhile back and it helped a ton with my own CB550 rebuild. I also used your video on tank lining to help get things just right. Nice work! I've got a question. I'm running a Dyna S ignition set up with 5ohm Magna coils on my 1974 CB550 along with a Motogadget M-unit blue. My charging system is working correctly, but I can't seem to keep my battery at an appropriate voltage level. When it's at 14V and I turn the ignition key switch "ON" the M-unit app tells me the ignition system alone is using up 5.0 amps = 55W or so. Does that seem like a lot to you? When just at idle that power consumption drops the battery pretty quick. I'm running a Shorai battery if that makes any difference. Thanks for any input
@HTMR6 жыл бұрын
That current draw seems fine. The CB550 was not designed to provide 14V at idle. Try revving it up to 5k and see what voltage you get. Keep this in mind when cruising around town, you will need to keep the RPM's up in order to keep the battery charged.

From what I've seen it doesn't look that hard to do, there's just a couple things I'm confused about. That black wire with the white stripes that has hanging down the side of the engine, was that a wire that was already hooked up to the bike or did you connect that wire just to test the ignition timing? I know how to use my test light to check my points timing, but not with the Dyna. Was your test light touching the end of that black wire...and what was the other end of that wire hooked up to? So: Question 1: As far as I understand, I won't need a CDI with the Dynatek ignition. Is that right? If I do need CDI, why does the wire go to the coil and not to the cdi?! Question 2: What is the orange wire in the original loom? Coil to CDI or power supply of coil? Mine have different colors. I really appreciate your help!

If you have cdi, you don't need this system.

Hi Matt! I've got a quick question about the spark plug boots. Namely how do you connect the fresh cut dyna wire to the spark plugs? Did you re-use existing boots or buy new ones ect thanks! It would be really sweet if you could give me a link but, I understand if you can't find it / don't want to.

So I 'm a dummy. I forgot that the spark plugs have a little metal piece that screws onto the top. Everything is all good now and thank you for this vid / replying!

Hi Matt, I have a 1989 Ninja ZX10 with an aftermarket Dyna2000 ignition. The ignition box has a red light indicator on it and its not coming on, and im also getting no spark. Drove it one night all fine then the next morning it turns over but wont fire up. Replaced ignition coils and still wont fire up. I did notice that when the red light is on the bike fires up, but that night the red light would blink for a sec instead of stay on and now will not come on at all, can you guess why my bike will not start? Fully charged battery as well

I'm not familiar with that model, contact Dyna support.

Hey Matt. Great video. I am suprise how sloppy that plate is considering it's function. U thought it would have been a more precise fit
@HTMR7 жыл бұрын
The size of slots? Maybe they use the same plate across many models?

Dude, may seem like a dumb question but how do I know which tower on my dynatek mini coils goes to which cylinder? I know its 1/4 and 2/3 but which is which on each coil?
@HTMR5 жыл бұрын
The coil will fire both plugs at same time. It is a wasted spark on one of the cylinders.

So i just bought a honda cbr 900 rr and it has one of the dyna digital performance ignition and what exactly does it do to your bike and what does it replace? Id rather go stock since i dont how it works. Can it fuck with the engine
@HTMR4 жыл бұрын
Not sure what system you have but generally it is to produce a more powerful spark.

can I install these coils to my 1974 kawasaki Kz 400?
@Stripping_Bolts2 жыл бұрын
Why do I always see people putting dielectric grease directly on the wires/leads?? Dielectric grease is an insulator and should not touch wires/leads. Am I missing something?

I'm a little confused. So the ignition is supposed to fire the coils at two different points? Once at the advance timing marks and once at the firing "F" mark?
@HTMR7 жыл бұрын
At idle, the ignition fires at "F" mark. Once engine speeds up, the mechanical advance kicks in and advances the timing. The full advance mark is to check at a higher RPM.

Is it accurate if you leave the ignition key in the on position for a minute or 2 the magnets will be fried?
@HTMR5 жыл бұрын
I don't know but haven't fried anything in 20+ years. I'm sure I left it on over the years.

Have you put a Dyna system on a 3 cylinder? How robust are the Dyna systems?

I wired one up a few years ago. I feel they are pretty reliable.

Your stock coils are just fine. Spend the money elsewhere.

Curious, did this kit come with plate screws? I have a cb750 I'm putting a dyna s on, and the plate screws are totally stripped to the point where I definitely need new ones. If the kit comes with them, happy me, if not, I need to source some new ones.
@ianloughney95707 жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, when I say plate screws, I'm referring to the 3 screws along the perimeter of the plate the hold it to the case.
@HTMR7 жыл бұрын
No, does not come with screws. They are stripped because they are not phillips drive. They are JIS and people keep using the wrong screwdrivers. I use these screwdrivers and they are awesome: amzn.to/2w33HJI amzn.to/2uFop2F
@ianloughney95707 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've got some JIS sets, but apparently the previous owner didnt :( Any thoughts on where to find a set of screws? I was planning for junkyard, but that seems like quite a trek for 3 screws.
@HTMR7 жыл бұрын
Why not just order OEM screws?
@ajs39947 жыл бұрын
I take the screws to the hardware store, replace them with cap screws. If they are stripped you need to tap them out to the next size - that sucks.

hey matt really like your videos and how you go into detail when making them they help out a lot. how ever i just put this same dyna s ignition system on my 77 kz 1000 and i did exactly what you did, by setting it to the most advanced mark on the advance unit, and when i turn the advance to the fire mark my test light lights up like it should for both 1-4 coils and 2-3 coils, but the light stays on till i turn the crank all the way to just past the t mark. is this normal? or am i missing something here. any thing helps.
@HTMR7 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, thanks for all the compliments. The light should be on for some time and "dwell". Not sure exactly how much though.
@mr_gervais4577 жыл бұрын
no problem any time, keep up the good work. and yeah a few guys from some Kawasaki forums said the light should stay on till the trigger mark and not to worry to much. as soon as i clean out my gas tank, im going to throw it on and put some gas in it and see what happens. i will let you know the out come.

The important part is when it first comes on or fires. Let me know.
