Great video. ISO burner app I had never used before. Nice UI. Rufus most common one in the states it seems? Mint XFCE v. 20.3 Install was going great till the end. Got a grub install error on the root directory. So I went to the Mint forum page and found a solution, which was to disable the Legacy Mode boot sequence in BIOS. Booted the system back up and clicked on Mint Install again and it gave me several options, chose format and re-install, which worked perfectly. Did updates on the system, easy to use and I used a 17 year old ThinkPad with 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, AMD Dual Core 64 bit processor. Old ThinkPads are tanks;) Integrated Gigabit NIC a + too.

is it possible to install linux mint on a school laptop, ive seen someone in my class do that with a usb
@PulsarTECHАй бұрын
Hi, Yes, it is possible to install Linux Mint on a school laptop using a USB drive. The process generally involves creating a bootable USB with the Linux Mint ISO, booting from the USB, and following the installation process. However, there are a few things to consider: Many school laptops come with administrative restrictions set by the institution. These restrictions might prevent booting from external devices or making changes to the operating system. You'd need to ensure you have the necessary permissions or ways to bypass these restrictions if allowed. Installing Linux Mint usually requires modifying or formatting the internal storage. Make sure to back up any important data beforehand. If the laptop needs to retain Windows or the original OS for school purposes, you can set up a dual-boot configuration where both Linux Mint and the original OS coexist. Modern laptops might come with UEFI firmware and secure boot enabled. You may need to disable secure boot or configure UEFI settings to boot from the USB. Hope this helps!

Linux is a rabbit hole. It does not always install on every PC. In windows, on the other hand, its installer {Media Creation Tool} just works every time on any PC. I tried to install Linux four times on my old laptop without success. I put Win 10 back on my PC with no problems. Say what you will about Microsoft and their greed and control, which is true, but at least it works without a thousand excuses!
@PulsarTECH6 ай бұрын
Hi ,there are definitely pros and cons on each side. I still use Windows 10 because Adobe software is not available on Linux. The installation can be tricky for Linux because there are so many different PC hardware manufacturers and so many Linux distros (which are free, by the way). However, Linux doesn't keep up as well with all sorts of hardware as Windows does, simply because Windows is installed on about 90% of all home PCs in the world. On the contrary, Mac designs its OS for only a handful of models, which is why I've heard that their PCs, even with weaker specs than Windows PCs, can outperform them.

How do you choose which drive you want LM installed on?
@PulsarTECH7 ай бұрын
Hi! If you already have an operating system on your computer, such as Windows 10, and choose a clean installation during the Linux Mint setup, it will automatically format the system disk where Windows was installed and replace it with Linux Mint. Therefore, it's very important to copy everything you need from Windows before proceeding. If you choose to install Linux Mint alongside Windows 10, you need to prepare a separate partition using disk management software, or you can use the built-in disk management app. There's a link to a video on how to create a dual-boot system in the description. Hope it will help.

Before i can install on my HP laptop I receive a notice that I need to turn off my Intel Rapid Storage Technology Program. However, I can only uninstall the program of which I am then told I need to omit the Optane (intel program)......
@PulsarTECH Жыл бұрын
Hi, to address this situation, you can consider the following steps: Before making any changes, ensure you have a backup of important data on your laptop. Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings. You can usually do this by pressing a specific key during the startup process (common keys include Esc, F2, F10, or Del). Look for an option related to Intel Optane in the BIOS/UEFI settings. Disable or turn off the Intel Optane feature. After disabling Optane, uninstall the Intel Rapid Storage Technology program through the operating system's control panel or settings. Once both Intel Optane and Rapid Storage Technology are disabled and uninstalled, proceed with the installation of Linux Mint. After successfully installing Linux Mint, you can check if Intel Optane can be re-enabled in the BIOS/UEFI settings. After the installation, ensure that your system is stable and all necessary drivers are installed. Test different functionalities to confirm that the changes did not adversely affect your laptop's performance. Hope this will help!

how long should the first boot take? Mine is stuck at windows screen after i removed the flash drive and pressed enter (windows surface laptop 3). Thanks
@PulsarTECH Жыл бұрын
It's not uncommon for the first boot of a Linux distribution, like Linux Mint, to take a bit longer, especially when it's being installed on hardware that may have unique considerations, such as certain laptops. However, if it seems to be stuck at the loading screen, there might be an issue. If you haven't already, try restarting the laptop and see if it successfully boots into Linux Mint. Check UEFI/BIOS settings to ensure they are configured correctly for Linux. Secure Boot might sometimes cause compatibility issues. Also make sure that in the boot device priority the drive with Linux Mint on it is in the first place. Hope it will help!

@PulsarTECH Жыл бұрын
Hi, If your Wi-Fi is not being detected on Linux Mint, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue: Some laptops have a hardware switch or function key (e.g., F2, F3) to enable or disable Wi-Fi. Make sure it's turned on. Make sure your laptop is not in airplane mode, which can disable wireless connections. You can check this in the system settings. This command will restart the Network Manager service, which controls network connections: sudo service network-manager restart Ensure that your wireless adapter is recognized by Linux Mint. You can use the following command to list your network interfaces: ifconfig -a Look for entries like "wlan0" or "wlpXsY" to identify your wireless adapter. Ensure your system is up to date by running the following commands: sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade Linux Mint often provides additional drivers for hardware components, including wireless adapters. You can open the "Driver Manager" tool from the System Settings and check if there are any proprietary drivers available for your Wi-Fi adapter. Hope it will help!

Hi, f your Linux Mint installation doesn't detect or install the necessary WiFi drivers automatically, you may need to manually install them. Here's how you can do it: First, you need to determine the make and model of your WiFi adapter. You can do this by opening a terminal window and running the following command: lspci | grep Network This command will list all the network devices on your system. Look for the line that describes your WiFi adapter, which will typically include information about the manufacturer and model. Once you know the make and model of your WiFi adapter, you can search for the appropriate Linux drivers. You can do this by searching online using the make and model of your WiFi adapter along with keywords like "Linux drivers" or "Ubuntu drivers" (since Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu). Once you've found the drivers, download them onto a USB drive or transfer them to your Linux Mint installation using another method (such as Ethernet or Bluetooth tethering). Then, follow the instructions provided with the drivers to install them on your system. This may involve running installation scripts or using package management tools like apt. After installing the drivers, reboot your system to apply the changes. Once your system has rebooted, you should be able to see WiFi networks in your network manager. Click on the network icon in the system tray and select your WiFi network to connect. You may need to enter the WiFi password if it's a secured network. Hope this will help!

I created a new flash drive on a different USB stick, no luck. I tried in Compatability Mode but it still failed at the same point. Does anyone know what's wrong and how to get around it - in novice terms
@PulsarTECH4 ай бұрын
Hi, sorry to hear that. Sometimes I hear people having issues and some don't. Here's what you can try: Boot into the Linux Mint live environment (from your USB), connect to the internet, and install the Boot Repair tool: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair After installation, run Boot Repair from the terminal or the application menu and choose the recommended repair option. This should attempt to fix GRUB issues and reinstall it correctly. If your laptop uses Secure Boot (common in UEFI systems), try disabling it in the BIOS/UEFI settings. GRUB sometimes fails to install when Secure Boot is enabled. Fast Boot can interfere with the installation process as well. Disable it in your BIOS/UEFI settings. Hope this will help!

Hi, i wanted to install on a laptop installed with win 11. . . i don't need the win 11, but I want my old files intact. Can that be done ?
@PulsarTECH Жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes, you can install Linux Mint on a laptop that already has Windows 11 installed, and you can typically keep your old files intact. Before making any changes to your system, it's always a good practice to back up your important files to an external drive or cloud storage. This ensures that your data is safe in case anything goes wrong during the installation process. Download the Linux Mint ISO from the official website and create a bootable USB drive. Insert the USB drive into your laptop and restart it. Boot from the Linux Mint live environment and choose the option to install Linux Mint. During the installation process, you will be prompted to choose how you want to install Linux Mint. Select the option that allows you to install Linux Mint alongside Windows. This option is often labeled as "Install Linux Mint alongside Windows" or something similar. This will create a new partition for Linux Mint without affecting your existing Windows installation. Specify the amount of disk space you want to allocate to Linux Mint. This space will be taken from the free space on your hard drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process. Linux Mint will install alongside Windows, and you'll have the option to choose your operating system each time you start your laptop. After the installation is complete, you can access your old files from the Windows partition directly from Linux Mint. The Linux file manager should show the Windows partition as a separate drive. Always backup your data before making significant changes to your system. Be careful during the installation process to select the correct options to avoid unintentional data loss. Hope this will be helpful!

@PulsarTECH Жыл бұрын
Hi, the "Verification Failed, Security Violation" error during the boot process of Linux Mint from a USB drive can occur due to various reasons, including issues with the installation media or problems with the system's UEFI/Secure Boot settings. Some systems come with Secure Boot enabled by default, which may prevent the booting of unsigned operating systems. Try disabling Secure Boot in your system's UEFI/BIOS settings. Access your system's UEFI/BIOS settings during the boot process. Look for the Secure Boot option and disable it. Save changes and exit. Ensure that your USB drive is set as the first boot device in the UEFI/BIOS settings. This ensures that the system attempts to boot from the USB drive before other devices. Some systems may have issues with UEFI booting. Try using compatibility mode if available in your UEFI/BIOS settings. If you're using a USB 3.0 port, try using a USB 2.0 port instead, or vice versa. Some systems may have compatibility issues with certain USB ports during the boot process. Hope it will help!

What if linux cant see the drive i want to install it to?
@1rfan_saeed Жыл бұрын
Hello, can I use my SD card instead of USB?
@PulsarTECH Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, it is possible to install and boot Linux Mint from an SD card. However, keep in mind that the performance may not be as fast as when installed on a regular hard drive or SSD. Additionally, SD cards have limited read/write cycles compared to other storage media, so constant read/write operations (common during the operating system's normal usage) may impact the lifespan of the SD card. During the installation, make sure to select the SD card as the destination for the installation. When prompted, install the GRUB boot loader to the SD card. Complete the installation process, and after it finishes, restart your computer. Ensure that your computer is set to boot from the SD card. You may need to adjust the boot order in your BIOS/UEFI settings. Hope it will help!

Whenever I install Linux the way you tell it. It says there's no os on my ssd can you diagnose my problem
@PulsarTECH7 ай бұрын
Hi, check your BIOS settings to ensure that the SSD is recognized by your system. You may need to enable AHCI mode or ensure that the SSD is set as the primary boot device. During the Linux installation process, make sure you're selecting the correct drive to install Linux on and that you're partitioning it correctly. Sometimes, if the drive is not partitioned properly, it may not be recognized as having an operating system. If your system has Secure Boot enabled, try disabling it temporarily during the installation process. Hope this will help!

@@PulsarTECHIs it common for the preparing ubuntu-driver installation process in the multimedia codecs to take a long time?
@PulsarTECH7 ай бұрын
@@boredbrewer1998 Yes, it can be common for the preparation phase of the ubuntu-drivers installation process, including multimedia codecs, to take a significant amount of time. Several factors can contribute to this: If your internet connection is slow or unstable, downloading the necessary packages and dependencies can take longer than expected. The performance of your computer, including CPU speed, available RAM, and disk I/O, can affect the installation time. Slower systems may take longer to process and install the packages. The ubuntu-drivers installation process may need to resolve a large number of dependencies, which can take time to download, unpack, and configure. Sometimes the repository mirrors used to download the packages may be slow or experiencing high traffic, causing delays.

Hi, sorry to hear that. It seems like there might be an issue with the bootloader installation during the Linux Mint installation process. Ensure that your computer is set to boot from the correct drive. Access the BIOS or UEFI settings of your laptop and check the boot order. Make sure that the drive where Linux Mint is installed is set as the first boot option. If it still doesn't work try to reinstall Linux Mint, paying close attention to the installation options, especially the bootloader installation. During the installation, make sure to select the correct drive where you want the bootloader to be installed. Hope it helps. Let me know how it goes!

When I selected the linux file it didn't appear in etcher what could be the issue?
@PulsarTECH7 ай бұрын
Well, it could be due to various reasons, though I haven't experienced that before. I would suggest redownloading the ISO file and placing it in the Downloads folder. When selecting it in Balena Etcher, ensure that you choose the .iso file and not any other downloaded files. If the issue persists, try using Rufus to flash the ISO onto the USB stick. can i used a external hard drive?
@PulsarTECH11 ай бұрын
Hi, yes, you can use an external hard drive to install Linux Mint, although the process may vary slightly depending on your specific setup and preferences. Here's a general overview of how you can do it: Prepare the External Hard Drive: Make sure your external hard drive has enough free space to install Linux Mint. Back up any important data on the drive as the installation process will erase everything on it. Follow the Installation Wizard: The Linux Mint installer will guide you through the installation process. Follow the prompts to select your language, keyboard layout, time zone, and other settings. When prompted, choose your external hard drive as the installation location. Once you've selected the installation options and confirmed the settings, proceed with the installation process. Linux Mint will be installed on your external hard drive. After the installation is complete, you may need to restart your computer and adjust the boot order settings in the BIOS/UEFI to boot from the external hard drive. By following these steps, you can install Linux Mint on an external hard drive and use it as a portable operating system that you can boot from different computers. Hope it will help!

@PulsarTECH7 ай бұрын
Hi, try switching to another USB port on your computer. Sometimes certain ports may have compatibility issues. Try formatting your USB drive and re-creating the bootable USB. Make sure your BIOS/UEFI settings are configured to boot from USB. You may need to access your computer's BIOS/UEFI setup menu (usually by pressing F2, F12, ESC, or DEL during boot) and set the USB drive as the primary boot device. If you're using UEFI firmware with Secure Boot enabled, try disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS/UEFI settings. Some Linux distributions, including Linux Mint, may not boot properly with Secure Boot enabled. If you're having trouble booting with UEFI, try enabling Legacy Boot mode in your BIOS/UEFI settings. However, note that this might not be an option on all systems, especially newer ones designed for UEFI. If none of the above solutions work, try using a different USB drive. Sometimes certain USB drives may not be compatible with the bootloader or firmware of your computer. Hope it will help!

every single video on installing linux, downloading the iso, downloading the flash to usb program, or using optical drive dvd iso , setting up hd partition for dual boot etc etc always for me at least meet a stumbling block somewhere. I download the iso no probs, download the flash to usb program but the later wont open, even the rufus version, if I try to just use the dvd to boot from I cant access the right bios screen to get the boot choice and on it goes. I am on a win 7 pc with high specs trying this. My advice, take your pc to computer shop and get it done, make sure you get instructions for future installs. Secondly, and what I have decided to do is leave this working fine pc alone and buy a 2nd hand pc which in my country will cost around $140 for one with way more req's needed for Linux and take that to the shop. I know that is money spent, but what price do you put on massive frustration.

Hi, that's strange why Balena can't open, I'm not sure but maybe it doesn't support Win 7. Well, otherwise Rufus should do the job. @@PulsarTECH Hi, thanks for your reply. It will be some tiny glitch in my system which is all it takes to remove it from my capability. I did read on the rufus site that win 7 was unsupported but tried it anyway. I thought I might of got lucky with burning the iso to dvd and trying the boot from that but just could not get the correct screen bios to have a shot. Tried every key from 1 to 12 plus the del key but could only get the safe mode etc screen which has no option as far as I can see to choose a usb or optical boot up. I am thinking of doing a reinstall of my win 7 os but it will probably only fix any glitches regarding drive partioning and maybe the flash to usb usage if I'm extra lucky, but I dont see how it could change the bios screen which is my main hesitance towards bothering. Does anyone reading this know the secret to gaining access to the bios screen with boot options , I know that is dependent on the mother board and not windows but is there a kind of universal work around on the safe mode screen?, BTW thanks for the time you spend doing this, there are many as I can see benefiting and thats a great thing.
