I don’t understand why the slit is facing up at 1:17. Wouldn’t it be better to be pointing down so that if water gets in between, it would run past the hole? About to fix siding at my house and want to make sure I do it right. Thanks!

What about the flashing and 1/4 inch gaps at the top of the blocking? Isnt flashings and gap required
@doctorpickles792 жыл бұрын
Correct. The way he constructs the block and trims the siding around it is correct but this should have cap flashing with a 1/4" gap at the top and NO CAULK. Horizontal surfaces should never be caulked with fiber cement siding.

Like this part around the copper pipe. Very good. Also good tip on making the cuts, my first few I added 1/8" and joints were huge I had to tear out and redo. I will take your advise. Thanks, Ed

make sure you have at least a 3/16 to 1/4 inch gap between the siding and the block.

How does the top of the block shed water? Or is it not a big concern due to the gable overhang. Thanks and great build series
@JasonAtNovaleaf6 жыл бұрын
should put flashing on top, and he should have caulked the pipe as it penetrates the wall before putting the block in place.

Should of put z-bar on top of the block

james hardie reccomends flashing above all penetration trim. also, angle grinder with a cement wheel. makes it suuuuper easy to back cut the edges of your cuts to fine tune a notch. otherwise great video, imma use it for training purposes... my guys will get a ton of mileage out of "pile on this caulk" 😂

How would you approach this install if you were using JH vertical siding (board and batten). Is there any reason to cut the board around the mounting block? Or can you just put the mounting block right on top of the siding?

Any idea where i can buy fiber cement mouting blocks to do this?

I think it was explained, but Im not sure why the slit on the ice/water shield was needed. Why not just cut the hole and slip it over?

Why wouldn't you use a premade J-block

Im not throwing shade on this video, since I did learn a few tips. But, I feel I need to mention that there is something concerning about the suggestion to adding caulk to the top portion of the pipe trim board. I got the following from another website: "All fiber-cement manufacturers specify minimum clearances where siding hits a horizontal surface. This can include horizontal trim, such as above the head trim on an opening, above the mounting block for exterior penetrations, or where the siding lands on the top edge of water table. At least 1/4 inch is required, and this gap should remain uncaulked."

No caulking should be applied on top, There should be a piece of z flashing there, with min 1/4" gap to the plank. This is per Hardie installation instructions. I'm not sure if the piece of ice and water is needed. Not per manufacturer instructions.
Why does he say “um” practically every sentence? Furthermore their is a product called a hole saw and it makes a hole in material so one does not need to cut any blocking in half. Furthermore, the flashing can be cut in an “X” pattern where hole is and it will slide right over the pipe. This guy does not know what he is doing. Silicone is not what you want either…
