In the settings of DDU there is an option to have a safe mode dialogue when opening DDU, this automatically creates a restore point as well. There is also an option to disable windows update from installing Nvidia drivers. This has to be disabled when you're finished installing the drivers. Maybe a slightly more optimal method, maybe not. Also NVCleaninstall is a great tool to debloat and install the Nvidia drivers, also has a MSI enabling function in the install process.

Hey Panjno, if it's no problem to answer: is it worth it to format Windows before changing the GPU or does DDU do an 100% job as in not leaving traces and not leaving modifications to the system behind? Yes, it's on the neurotic side, but if there are marginal gains in doing the boring time-consuming long way job, I want them, it's not like I'm formatting daily. I always had this doubt.

No need to be neurotic. DDU is fine. It does a proper clean install. You'd only want to reinstall/format Windows if you messed up something major that makes your Windows experience horrible (slows, stutters, viruses, crashes, random restarts).

Great advice and thanks for the video, Panjno. One additional step I do when using DDU, I remove the ethernet cable from the system before running the uninstall. This will prevent Windows from installing the graphic card driver at re-boot when you get to the desktop.

I formatted my computer and I'm having problems installing the driver for my GPU again, every time it's installing the screen freezes and doesn't complete the installation, I tried installing the driver in safe mode and it almost worked, the installation complete 100% but when I start windows in normal mode the screen goes black and windows doesn't start, I also tried using the DDU according to your tips but it doesn't give the same problems.

Tip No1, do research for said GPU on THE SPECIFIC GAME you be playing 90% of the time. Download the most STABLE and Best performance drivers REGARDING THE SPECIFIC GAME. Never blindly download "latest" drivers they tend to be buggy, worse and set for less performance especially around summer time in purpose for boosting next years new GPU sales.

You find the most efficient driver on your favorite game and the tricky part is finding it cause usually the very best performance/stability drivers are old and they might not be on Nvidias manual driver downloadin section . In my case im on rtx4090 runnin one of the very first drivers 536.23

If you never use any of the Geforce Experience or Nvidia app features then I wouldnt use either of them, just the main driver - but if you DO want those features, I'd install NV APP over Geforce Experience :)

With express you are installing all the other crap you dont need from nvidia. From hd sound to all the other crap plus the custom you can check the box for clean install and adjust nvidia control panel .

Can you help? I have a 14900k with a 4090. Fortnite crashes on me and says something about not enough memory. I just noticed my motherboard shares lanes so it knocks my GPU down to x8, could this be the issue or will updating the drivers work?

Hmm, it would be worth researching your motherboards manual as it should show you which m.2 slots to use depending on your setup, if you have a 4090 I would see if you can use a slower m.2 slot than giving up GPU bandwidth

you have to replace your NVMe-SSD in an other Slot. many Boards share the Graphiclanes with the 1st NVMe-Slot above the Graphiccard.

Why are you saying that to avoid windows from installing an old driver by switching off the wi-fi or wired connections when all you need to do is start windows in safe mode start up DDU and the options page will automatically start up, then just goto bottom and check the box "prevent downloads of drivers from "windows update " when "windows " search for a driver for a device" And this will stop windows from installing a driver

I would usually stick with the latest, some drivers can perform better than others but it's usually not worth giving up features/game support for them

For AMD gpu do you need to reinstall the chipset (motherboard) drivers ? when you perform the fresh download. I saw in an older video about using ddu that AMD needs to get the drivers for their mother board also.

Had the same issue. Uninstalled everything relating to ASUS all apps, etc, using revo uninstaller. Mouse and keyboard now work fine in safe mode, weird.

Make sure to have your mouse and keyboard connected to the motherboard directly, and not on a hub or the front IO.

When I set my highest refresh rate 75hz the resolution kinda stretches. This occurred after installing a new Rx 550 into my old system and not only that I also have less fps more fps drops and mouse stuttering in games. I have a aorus master 4090 and asus tuf 7900 xtx oc. I swap these gpus once a month almost. When swap to the 4090, I go to safe mode and usee ddu to clean amd gpu drivers, and use "amd cleanup utility" which doesnt uninstall chipset drivers as i have 7800x3d. The go to windows without the safe mode and install nvidia gpu driver. Same when swap to the 7900 xtx, in safe mode first I use ddu then "nvidia cleanup tool" and then returning to windows without safe mode I install amd adrenalin drivers..Only ddu doesnt remove everything. Need the cleanup tools its must. For intel idk lol..

I just bought a gt730 ddr3 4gb for 30$, after installing it into my pc everything was working fine but the drivers version is 383.13 and i want the latest 473. Nvidia has stopped supporting the GT 730 due to it's age. It looks like GeForce driver 391.35 is the last version for that card.

When using DDU, is it necessary to use safemode, or can you use it in regular mode? I've done both, but to be honest, I don't see or understand the difference. Could you please explain? Also, with regards to Bitlocker, is it necessary to have it on? I'm asking, because I usually have to input my entire Bitlocker code just to access safemode. Thanks a lot!

Safe mode as in regular mode some of the elements are in use by the os and cant be removed. It'll still work but leave some files/processes behind. In safemode all removed
