HOW TO Install Interior Motion Light Switches | Single Pole & Three Way

Welcome to RidgeLife. In this video, we show how to install motion sensor light switches in our log home. These are easy to setup occupancy sensor switches. We install both single pole and three-way light switches and show the wiring differences for each.

Hmm. I am not familiar with a 4-way mechanical switch sorry.

Won't work with a 4-way switch. What a 4-way switch does is controls the set of travelers. In one (switch) position it is parallel and the other position (instead of top to bottom) it crosses from top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left. There are many diagrams of them on the internet. Let's keep learning! @@RidgeLife

Take tagged wire off, take off traveler and wire nut together. How will switch work with only a ground connected?

I know that feeling. When remodeling a house, wife said did not want a light over the sink. after I was finished, she changed her mind. I installed a ceiling light for her with a motion detector. Lights continually went off and on as dogs walked under it.

What brand is that motion switch? I tried a Legrand but does not work like it’s supposed to with a 3 way switch

What makes this difficult is that simple fact that WE DIDN'T GET INSTRUCTIONS ON TAGGING A WIRE, :"WHICH WIRE DID WE TAG?"

You should see a picture in your specific switch instruction showing which one to tag.

I see this is 6 months old but here are my 2 cents. I assume he is referring to a tag wire as the wire that was attached to the black screw on the original 3-way switch it is important to know if that wire goes to the load or is the hot lead from the breaker box. I will tag that wire as hot if it comes from the breaker and the wire going to load as load. Note that these wires will not be in the same junction box The hot wire will be in one box on one wall and the load wire will be in the box on the other wall.

I'm in the middle of trying to install one of these and the hot wire is in the opposite box with the standard 3 way switch and the box with my motion sensor has the direct connection to load. What I can't figure out is how to wire the other box with the switch. I know I'm jumping the hot wire to one of the travelers but does it also connect back the switch? I'm thinking the sensor needs to be on the load side.

Do not know what you mean by tagged wire. Is that the blue wire? Or did I miss a step somewhere? Would have been great if the actual wiring up was illustrated.

The instructions call out a wire you mark before unwiring. This is the tagged wire.

You really didn't describe the 3 way scenario adequately. You didn't show how that new motion sensor device gets connected to the existing switch. Instead you jumped to the second switch, and even with that, the camera was so far away from it, we couldn't see what you were doing?

This is a screwdriver. The screwdriver removes the screws that are holding your switch on to the wall. You need to remove the switch before you can replace it.

Your verbal explanation of the three way install is very confusing. I played it back five times and still didn't understand what you meant. Instead of only talking, you should show the connections, a close-up of what you did because your verbal explanation had me running in circles for a long time. Where does the red wire go? You don't say or show it. You said to disconnect the black wire and that caused the switch to stop working. I went back and forth to the breaker box, super frustrated with your confusing explanation, drove me nuts. Wasted lots of time and extra effort.
