good explanation, always used #5's yrs back, but just got back into hobby after 30yrs. Always used styrene to adjust height, (the hard way), but this much simpler, kadee's are great.

I spent nearly $400.00 changing out wheel sets and body mounted Kaydee couplers from plastic wheels to metal ones. After all, trains in real life have metal wheels and not plastic. I did a little over 100 pieces of rolling stock. Took the time to weather each piece as well. For coal loads I used real coal smashed to bits with a hammer. All tenders have real coal in them. I did the same. I changed all wheels to metal and upgraded all rolling stock with Kadee couplers. I spent roughly $400 to $500.

I feel you cause decided change all my wheels to irons wheel's and #148 kedee Coupler change all my rolling stock kedee Coupler its was challenge, but I accomplish what I want to do😅

You are supposed to use some form of screw to hold the lid on so it’s easy to change couplers. Hope this helps you in the future. 😊

Next improvements: add some weight (lead), and replace wobbly wheelsets with metal wheels (like those Kadee sells). Trains run far better that way!

I just got back in the hobby and spent good money on rolling stock and locamotives too find out different manufacturers couplers don't line up in height. Maybe the NMRA should monitor this a bit better instead of making locamotives look so "Prototypical " and expensive. Especially for younger modelers just getting into the hobby. Great video though. One word of advice, if your going too have magnets on your layout to automatically uncouple don't cut the hose but bend it slowly up so it doesn't hit the frogs.

i dont install the draftgear box, i just replace the hornhook with the springbox and knuckle coupler. works fine for me. if theres room ill super glue a box on the frame

So, an undershank can only fit an overshank, not another undershank, or does it depend on the make and model?

Depends on the car and where the knuckle sits.

Yes they do. Kadee part number 501 is the truck with 33" wheel sets. There are others as well. Hope this helps!
