Around town where I live there are quite a few stair shops that specialize in making square nosings out of basically any type of flooring to match the rest of your floor. The back of the nosing is left with the original locking edge so all you do is cut a plank to complete the depth of your tread and boom! your tread is perfectly flush, perfectly color matched and you can order your desired nose overhang. Also I’d definitely recommend to use a more heavy duty adhesive that doesn’t dry hard and cracks like wood glue
@mrvvoo
@mrvvoo 2 жыл бұрын
I learned about these local options too that my flooring dealer made me aware of. The only problem is that this doesn’t work well for laminate and vinyl. The mitered edges that are necessary inevitably end up with super sharp corners (which will also be fragile) or gaps with exposed MDF below the finished surface. The sales guy agreed this isn’t ideal for laminate/vinyl because you have to address this gap with a commercial-grade wax crayon to match the finish. This does work really well, however, for engineered hardwood floors. Especially ones with thick enough of a veneer. You can even route out a tiny round-overed edge and it would be perfect. For laminate/vinyl, not so much.
@2008romboy
@2008romboy 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrvvoo That’s actually very surprising to me. What city are you in? I’m in Seattle area and the shop that I use makes them out of pretty much every type of flooring including lvp and laminate. And they ease the edges of mitered corners and color match with special blended stain in a way that it looks and feels like a solid piece of material. It sounds like the guys you’re using just aren’t using appropriate tools to manufacture them 🤔

Real simple straight through no music, one of the best I've seen on KZbin. And at Floor and Decor I ask a contractor and an associate about doing the steps and they went into a diatribe. I like that you used common sense from experience to do your thing. It just made sense and save hundred of dollars the tree and retread crapola they tried to sell me for 20 to 40 dollars a pop plus trying to get it stained to match the laminate. After I watched I said "I knew there was an easier way. Thank BRO. I've subscribed and shared. PEACE.

Nice job young man. I first started doing laminate flooring on stairs 24 years ago when PERGO laminate flooring was just becoming popular. I remember being a little intimidated on my first set of stairs as I had never done them before in laminate.. Now I can do them in my sleep. They are very simple to do once you get it down. The only time they get involved is if you have railings and spindles with open stairs on one side or both. This means you have to remove the railings and spindles, hole saw precise holes on the sides of your treads for the spindles to go back in after the tread is installed. You also have to 45 your front and side pieces of stair nose molding very precisely and then put the spindles and railing back together. One wrong hole or cut and you will be pulling your hair out doing the tread over!!!

Is there any other way about going about this with spindles? Is there a way to do this without removing spindles and railing?

Or just glue with pad attached? And on the stair nose… I found a simple nose to nail down (no track)… in that case, do you just have laminate instal on entire step? And not cut back as if to instal that track?

@JessedoesDIY

Thanks. As long as all the tolerances are tight, it'll handle traffic just fine. It you install it too loose or don't have it touching the riser below it, it'll rock and slowly fatigue. Some people have issues with it or say it's uncomfortable. Personally I don't even notice them

A contractor has just completed a replacement of carpet on the stairs to our finished basement with LVP and the finished result is very much like yours with laminate in the video. (Looks great!) However, with the build up of the risers to make the surface flush for application of the tile, the tread is now shorter and going down the stairs, I find that i must clutch the handrail and angle my feet, as the nosing is higher than the tread and quite a slick surface. I fear a trip/ slip hazard now. Jesse; what can one do to the tread or the nosing to prevent a fall, short of installing a carpet runner? Is there a way to texture the nosing ?
@lewisengr

Not surprising. By reducing the tread width the stairs may no longer meet Building Code, which governs the rise:run of stairs.

@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately you'll need to remove the underlay from the planks before installing them on the stairs for the glue to stick. Then I would use a construction adhesive after in case there is residue on the bottom of the plank. The nosing can be bought at any flooring or box store. They will probably have to order it in, and are generic so you'll need a small piece of your flooring to get the best match

How do we install laminate that has foam backing? Can we glue it down same way or remove the foam backing first? Thanks for all your help. Best video on this topic.

The rest of it is the same way yes, but unfortunately you'll have to scrape off the foam backing material first. Thanks for watching, glad I could help!

Thanks! I got mine at home depot. It's universal and you typically have to order it in. Take a piece of your flooring in so you can colour and species match as close as you can. My flooring is dark grey oak, so I ordered smokey oak nosing. Once it's in place you'll never tell

I've been looking for an inexpensive way to finish my 11 pine steps that used to have carpet on them. I want to keep my current risers. I'm going to have to hire someone to do this for me. Can I keep my current risers and will the bullnose on my tread have to be cut off? Where do I find the bullnoses to match the laminate? I've never seen them at Lowe's or Home Depot. I suppose I could use vinyl treads instead of laminate? What's the advantage of one over the other?

The only thing to keep in mind is building codes… most USA States adopt International Residential code. Per those standards stair treads need to be at least 10 inch from riser. If you build out your riser, you might not be compliant with code.

@1:45 What if you're replacing carpet where the nosing is rounded on the wood tread itself? Mine overlaps by 1" . Do I cut it just to the point that it makes a square overlap (remove the curve), or do I cut it back to the original riser?

Looking at doing this project next; my existing toe kicks are rounded so adding plywood to the riser won't create a square corner. Is there anyway around this or will I have to cut off the existing toe kicks?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 3 жыл бұрын
The plywood you add will come out to the outside edge of your existing toe kick. So round or not should make little difference because once you have your laminate installed over it, that will be creating a square edge, and the new toe kick will sit on the flat edge of the laminate riser. Only problem I can see is if it is a large radius on the existing toe kick you might not be able to get the metal tracking close enough the edge to hold up the new.

Informative video. It’s probably good you left the gold linoleum as the really old stuff had asbestos in it and you don’t want to mess with it. 👍 looks great. Any concerns that the bullnose edge is higher where it overlaps the tread? I would be concerned that you could trip over that edge.
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 4 жыл бұрын
No concerns to me anyways, after a couole days you honestly don't even know it's there, its really under a quarter inch or so higher
