Around town where I live there are quite a few stair shops that specialize in making square nosings out of basically any type of flooring to match the rest of your floor. The back of the nosing is left with the original locking edge so all you do is cut a plank to complete the depth of your tread and boom! your tread is perfectly flush, perfectly color matched and you can order your desired nose overhang. Also I’d definitely recommend to use a more heavy duty adhesive that doesn’t dry hard and cracks like wood glue
@mrvvoo
@mrvvoo Жыл бұрын
I learned about these local options too that my flooring dealer made me aware of. The only problem is that this doesn’t work well for laminate and vinyl. The mitered edges that are necessary inevitably end up with super sharp corners (which will also be fragile) or gaps with exposed MDF below the finished surface. The sales guy agreed this isn’t ideal for laminate/vinyl because you have to address this gap with a commercial-grade wax crayon to match the finish. This does work really well, however, for engineered hardwood floors. Especially ones with thick enough of a veneer. You can even route out a tiny round-overed edge and it would be perfect. For laminate/vinyl, not so much.
@2008romboy
@2008romboy Жыл бұрын
@@mrvvoo That’s actually very surprising to me. What city are you in? I’m in Seattle area and the shop that I use makes them out of pretty much every type of flooring including lvp and laminate. And they ease the edges of mitered corners and color match with special blended stain in a way that it looks and feels like a solid piece of material. It sounds like the guys you’re using just aren’t using appropriate tools to manufacture them 🤔

The only thing to keep in mind is building codes… most USA States adopt International Residential code. Per those standards stair treads need to be at least 10 inch from riser. If you build out your riser, you might not be compliant with code.

Nice job young man. I first started doing laminate flooring on stairs 24 years ago when PERGO laminate flooring was just becoming popular. I remember being a little intimidated on my first set of stairs as I had never done them before in laminate.. Now I can do them in my sleep. They are very simple to do once you get it down. The only time they get involved is if you have railings and spindles with open stairs on one side or both. This means you have to remove the railings and spindles, hole saw precise holes on the sides of your treads for the spindles to go back in after the tread is installed. You also have to 45 your front and side pieces of stair nose molding very precisely and then put the spindles and railing back together. One wrong hole or cut and you will be pulling your hair out doing the tread over!!!
@velvelhertz9698

Is there any other way about going about this with spindles? Is there a way to do this without removing spindles and railing?

Real simple straight through no music, one of the best I've seen on KZbin. And at Floor and Decor I ask a contractor and an associate about doing the steps and they went into a diatribe. I like that you used common sense from experience to do your thing. It just made sense and save hundred of dollars the tree and retread crapola they tried to sell me for 20 to 40 dollars a pop plus trying to get it stained to match the laminate. After I watched I said "I knew there was an easier way. Thank BRO. I've subscribed and shared. PEACE.

Great....I hate using the metal strip....over time it does come loose(5 years later came loose in a job)if somebody kicks it. By accident .it flys off...flood it with liquid nails and use finish screws....not nails screws...you can tell tju e fill but make it look as part of the design...works every time.

Same here, they don’t last. I do not like this system with the junk bull nose. It’s actually cheaper and easier to use the oak treads with the built in bullnose and design. Plus the real wood just looks better.

@@JessedoesDIY I got my flooring! I have a question before I start putting it on the stairs. I am finding mixed information about putting the stair nosing on multiple stairs. I have 13 stairs I need to get done. Can I put stair nosing on all 13? Will it handle traffic fine up and down?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 жыл бұрын
As long as it's nice and flush like I explained and resting on the flooring, not a gap that allows downward flex it will be fine

You did very good job. How I wish he use the same idea as you did your stairs. My stairs it isn’t done yet but he didn’t put any glue to prevent squeaking.. my stairs squeak .. hope that easy to re do it but it isn’t easy money wise .

great video.Sort of thinking start with a full width board at the top of the stairs then work back into the room..saves any small infill pieces
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Typically the stairs are the last thing to do so you are making due with scraps anyways, might as well use them up. Plus any seams will just match the rest of the room anyways, just only make sure to do seams on the risers and not the steps if you can avoid it to avoid any potential squeaky spots over time

Looks great. However when video ends, looking down from the top, if you are not familiar with house you can't differentiate the steps from flooring at lower level, Potential Trip Hazard. In which case you may want to use a different shade of stair nosing but complimentary to flooring to highlight steps. Like on ramps to highlight between 1/2 landings and the ramp itself. (Yes I know I work in construction and don't walk by is the mantra to all site safety)
