Glad to hear from you again! Started playing bass with that exact same model like 12yrs ago. Modded it with new pickups, a bridge and sanded its finish to be matte. Will never sell this stupid thing because of its sentimental value to me although I will never play it again, too. 😅

What I learned from opening iPads - reheat when necessary. The glue will harden again when it cools down, so keep heating the parts where you're about to pry, so the glue remains malleable. *Also, try using a 5-in-1 painter's tool next time instead. It's about as flat as the thing you use now, but has a very wide, flat chisel tip. It's perfect for taking apart glued wood (and general demolition too ;))

I love this. Interesting that I just learned that when electric power was introduced, wiring was often done in molding like this since walls were plaster. 2 channels were cut on the back side with a grooving plane and they ran the hot through one and the neutral through the other (sometimes without insulation 😮). Stanley even made a plane specifically for this task that was cheaper than a combination plane. So I’m going to say you added LED markers in the traditional method 😂

A note for the fretboard removal. You have to do it slowly and carefully, otherwise you can break or warp the fingerboard. If you know the fingerboard is glued with hide glue, you can add a little bit of denatured alcohool (also called methylated spirts) inside the breach and that will dissolve the glue.

Nice one, always thought about trying that out on my neckthrough bass since the truss rod seems to be broken and it would also be multiple birds killed with one stone. The icing on the cake would have been to drill the side markers to the fretboardmarkers and fil lthem with glue as well, so the light might shine trough to the side of the fretboard
@tchiksguitars4 ай бұрын
I'm not entirely sure that would work but I love the idea, maybe with a second set of LEDs. A broken truss rod is the perfect excuse to try this. Like. Per-fect.

1:12 I've never seen this technique used with the solder before, only the iron itself. Is the solder necessary or more beneficial?
@bassimprovjams37723 ай бұрын
Same, I’ve seen people just take the rod to the frets to heat them up, seems like added work to redress the frets
@tchiksguitars3 ай бұрын
It's not necessary, it's just quicker if you don't mind the fumes. The solder allows for (a lot) more contact between the tip of the iron (which is not even flat in my case) and the fret itself.

Edit: "I'm not reading all that": I have this same bass (in red) and got it at the same time. The paragraph below is a love letter to this entry level bass, but the first gen, not the new, cheap feeling ones you can play in GC now. The quality was there for me as a kid, vs now things feel like $200... Lol bro I have the same series Ibanez as my first. GSR200 in red. That thing has been a work horse for sure. Quality build for how much it sold for. That being said, I have played on the newer 200s to see, and they definitely feel like and cheap. Best way I can make a comparison, if you'r in the drift world, you want that early model Toyota Corolla 86, but you are not drifting a more recent generation. I have vowed to not sell it since it was the first guitar my dad purchased for me 15+ years ago. It's tone is arguably still competitive. Now-a-days I play extended range stuff with my band, and in fact have purchased 2 fanned 5 strings. One of their first in the bassshop series, and their headless variant in seafoam. The seafoam has become my favorite tool to use, no fucking doubt. Brand loyal because of that GSR200. I may have to try this and upgrade that old entry level bass, just for kicks and because who would I sell it to!? Lol, cheap piece of driftwood with high end stuff in it? For shits and giggles.
