im trying to dual boot windows and linux mint 22. i want linux mint to be installed on external ssd, can you try if the grub can be installed on external ssd? i have seen videos that automatically put the grub on the windows ssd

@misha_wu, don’t remove the install device when it prompts before restarting after installation. Instead press ENTER let the computer restart and when restarting hit the F12 key to show the BIOS boot device menu. This key may change by device to device. Then select the disk where you installed Mint and press ENTER. It will boot into installed Mint. Then eject the Live USB drive from within Mint just like you do in Windows. DO NOT DO DUAL BOOT WITH WINDOWS. USE A COMPLETELY SEPARATE DISK TO INSTALL LINUX AND DETACH ALL OTHER DRIVES BEFORE STARTING TO INSTALL. After first time booting into Mint, shut down the computer. Plug in other disks. Power on. Use the same F12 key at the time of booting to bring up the BIOS 'Disk Selection Menu'. Select which disk to boot. Press Enter. Problem solved. Hope this helps. Note: While writing this comment, I was installing Mint following the same process as I mentioned and the installation finished. Now I am going to install Nvidia driver. Then Davinci Resolve. 😊

What if you already have linux? I tried to figure it out in VM, watched a vid on it, run MintUpgrade but it detected the old version as the new version. I have a ISO and mounted it not sure what to do next.

for now you have to manually update the sources file to update mint.

@@TechSolutionz I tried. Rebooted and now wallpaper, task bar, menu are gone. Desktop is black, only icons show up. On second reboot the wallpaper shows up for 1 second and it's black. Windows don't work, the bar at the top is gone, all buttons too, so can't minimise or exit. Can open terminal. Basically the upgrade failed. If it was a real pc not a VM it would have been bricked.
