Windows 10, 8.1, and 8 all have fast startup and will leave your system hung with an already mounted disk if you dual boot. It doesn't matter what the second operating system is. I'm surprised no one has got back on here and commented that this locked up their pc. You can delay this by turning off Fast Startup, but Windows will turn it back on. You will lock your system. Otherwise this is a very good, clear easy to follow video.

Completely agree, this is a good, general, user-friendly solution to get the best of both worlds, but this won't be the best solution for everyone. For those who are comfortable with using the PC BIOS and opening up their physical computer, I would ideally recommend purchase of a new hard drive, install the secondary hard drive into your machine, and install Linux directly onto that machine without affecting the Windows 10 drive.

This is the first video I’ve found anywhere that shows you a step by step install of an operating system. I’ve used Linux before with windows and for me to install it as as a noose back then, years ago, was hit and miss to have a dual boot system but I got it working. I’ve been out of using windows and Linux for several years now and just bought a new laptop with windows 10 on it, but want Linux on it since I like more privacy and a better system. This makes it easy for beginners of Linux to get started. Great job man and keep up the good work. Thank for the refresher.

Very good tutorial for windows users ! Slow and details with all windows alert stupid popups and program installation process. For the GNU/Linux users the 3 first steps (about 12 mins of videos) can be explained in 1 min : -1- Go to the Linux Mint website, go to the download page and copy the url of your prefered mirror. -2- Use the command "wget" to the download the file (wget mint-mirror.gwendallebihan.net/isos/stable/18.2/linuxmint-18.2-cinnamon-64bit.iso) -3- Get your flash drive device name with the command "sudo fdisk -l" -4- Write the iso image into the flash drive : sudo dd if=linuxmint-18.2-cinnamon-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=5M status=progress;sync" -5- Have fun and welcome in a free word

This is a great video on how to dual boot Windows and Linux alongside each other, and I would like to pass along MY experience as a novice to doing this. Just passing along my experience with dual booting Linux and Windows, If you want to switch from Windows to Linux ---- or---- from Linux back to Windows, for one reason or another, DO NOT use the restart, Do a complete shut down of your computer, reason...... once the operating system you are using takes charge of sound, and or video, That system will NOT release those particular items if you use restart, it will continue to control those particular items, and the system will NOT release those applications unlesss you completely shut down, in other words if you are using windows and switch to Linux using the restart sequence, Windows WILL NOT always release those applications, and you may or may not have sound in Linux, or visa versa, as either windows or linux still has control over them, so when switching from one to another save yourself a headache and shut down and start up again. On another note, I am not sure how the grub (which stands for Grand Universal Bootloader) is installed, or whether or not the grub is installed on the windows partition or not, as windows will seek out a better performing bootloader and either disable or eliminate the windows loader. This happened to me on an old Windows 7 machine that I ran Windows and Linux on the same hard drive as described in this video, if for some reason you decide that you no longer want Linux in your computer and you decide to somehow remove it, BEWARE, you may or may not be able to boot windows, as when you remove Linux, you will also remove the grub, and if windows had decided to eliminate its own loader and use the linux bootloader ( which is a far better bootloader) you will not be able to boot windows, so if you decide you no longer want to use Linux,, just leave it alone, and let it stay where it is.

Very patient and easy to follow. Used it on Windows 10 HP laptop to install Mint 18.3....everything works, but I am left with an issue: 1) during the install from USB, followed suggestion to use Third Party software, which brought up box to disable UEFI to allow that. Required establishing a password to disable, and said it would use same password later during install (I guess to re-enable?). Never saw that dialogue or anything like it again. So now I have this cryptic password with seemingly no use, and I'm not really sure what the status of my security is. Just a user, who doesn't understand UEFI or Third Party conflicts, but I understand password protection and am unsure what's been done here, nor why the dialogue never reappeared...or if it matters. Maybe it's just some arcane trivial difference between 18.2 and 18.3 since tutorial was made....??
