How To Install RAM In Your New 27" iMac
We take a look at how easy it is to install RAM into your new iMac. Now, this has to be a new 27" iMac as those are the only models that have user changeable RAM. This is a huge advantage of the new 2020 27 inch iMacs. If you and I had to pay Apple for their RAM it would cost us a small fortune. I ended up buying 32 gigs of RAM for about $150 which is considerably less than what Apple will charge you and I. And for about 10 minutes worth of work, this is so well worth the small effort. Anyone of us can do this. Hope the video will help some of you in your installations of new RAM in your brand new or older iMac. Please leave comments below. We have also provided some links to memory for your new iMac from Amazon below.

Thanks for the clear tutorial. However… don’t you think it a good idea to suggest either connecting an anti-static wrist band to the frame of the iMac or at the least before handling the memory ‘sticks’ to touch a metal point in the house such as a radiator with a finger in order to disperse any static electricity in your body which otherwise could damage the memory modules or soemthing lese inside the computer?

Worth mentioning that replacing the RAM cover is not as easy as it looks here . Took me about 10 goes to replace, so persevere. I was starting to panic. Was glad the delay when restarting was mentioned, as there was no sound or visible sign & quite a delay on my 2020 27 inch.

I really appreciate the video to help everyone out (including myself 6 months ago) however, I couldn't figure out why my iMac was still running so slow despite installing 2x32GB of additional ram. I contacted Apple and it turns out you should mix the ram capacity so channel A (slot 1 and 2) and channel B (slot 3 and 4) have the same total capacity - in my case 4 + 32GB in channel A and 4 + 32GB in channel B. My iMac runs much faster now! So thanks for the video but as far as I can tell the info in the video regarding the order in which to place DIMM plates is incorrect :-)

Thanks for this video. I have a query. Why it's showing the speed as 2400 after upgrade. Here is the timestamp in your video for reference. kzbin.info/www/bejne/enjEdGCcp7ameKc. It should be 2666, right? Please share your opinion.
@gregtoope
@gregtoope 4 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure why it did that. But my guess was comparability with the installed Apple RAM. I removed the Apple Ram and the speed increased to 2666. Plus I just installed another 32gigs or Ram (same as the original I bought) and it’s all running at 2666.

How has the iMac been for ya after these last two weeks?

I absolutely love it. I had forgotten how much I like editing on a computer with a large and high rez screen. I've edited so long on laptops (including my 16" Macbook Pro) and this is so much nicer!

I'll be doing a review on it soon. I just wanted to really work on it before I made a video with my thoughts. But its time. SO watch for that soon! Are you looking at getting one?

Cruisn Canada I’m on the fence about it. I’m at the newborn stage of starting my KZbin channel (which is about photo, video, and editing tech and tutorials) and I have the original surface book. Just a dual core i5 and no discrete graphics card. It’s fine for basic Microsoft office tasks... but not longer premiere pro editing by any means. The funny part is that I have a hard time downloading footage to my computer from my iphone since I need it to record me using my EOS RP. I apple computers have always done a better job moving stuff over from my phone... so I have been seeing if I should get this or wait for the newer silicon chips that might be announced soon.

Beer Chalermphol and you still have the original 2x4gb? Than leave the original in 1and 2 slots and the 16gb in the 3 and 4 . Should work at 2667Mhz

@@frecadore86 Yes, but some say by putting 4-4-16-16 to get 2667 Mhz, will not run the Dual channel. For now, I leave mine as x-16-x-16 and I get 32gb with Full speed 2667Mhz running Dual channel. But I still don't know what's the best option to maximize the rams potential.
@frecadore86
@frecadore86 4 жыл бұрын
Beer Chalermphol my opinion is that is dual channel. 1 or 3 ram Card will run in single channel when you have 2 ( in the 1 and 3 or 2and 4) or 4 will run in dual .

Beer Chalermphol you can check on system report on the memory tab. You will se that in my configuration Channel A have 2x16 and Chanel B have 2x4. Mixing 2 types off ram on the same Channel will reduce the speed. The producer of this video is wrong!!! They are other video on KZbin speaking about this ( I had the same problem and they make it clear for me) It is dual channel!! Since Chanel A have 32 GB and Channel B 8GB all whit 2667mhz
