You didn't show the most important part, where the three runs come together.

You are right. I also didn't have the finishing cap. Next roof I do, I'll try to make sure and get that.

That is exactly what I needed to see so I can add that to my list of construction knowledge!

Cut them square,fewer cuts no scrap and the square edge helps line them up.nice hitahtci gun.also pop a line,and also nail on the tar line.two nails per cap.

Is this the same process for shingles over ridge vents?

Correct! 👍

My ridge caps are showing signs of age , but the rest of the architecture shingles are ok. Can I replace ridge caps only ??
@NYAG2 ай бұрын
Yes, you can! If you have a ridge that runs into a slope like this one does, then it will be tricky getting it underneath the others.

Depends on the kind of shingles you want.

Had a roofer tell me it was "against code" to cut your own caps. Who's got a code reference for me???
@NYAG9 ай бұрын
Probably varies per state / county. Could be, but I wouldn't see why. so I honestly couldn't tell you.

You are cutting way to much off of each side of the caps. A 1/4" is more than enough. The reason that manufacturers make pre-made caps is so that there are 4 nails in each cap. And you don't cut the outside factory edge. The way your installing each cap is only getting 2 nails.

4 nails on each side!? Seams like more then needed... Good to know bout the ¼" as I was just eye balling cuts.
@larrycrookshanks16468 ай бұрын
@NYAG When you use 2 nails they catch the previous cap thus holding each cap with 4.

Also, manufacturer specs are to cut off 1" . Mr 1/4" over here is making it up as he goes. Read the specs my guy, you're talking out your blow hole.

@spaciouscake Hate to inform you but all pre-made shingle caps manufactured today have straight perforated cuts. I started installing in 1968 and at that time the old timers used to taper cut the caps about 1/4 -1/2". This was done mostly on hip roofs where you could see the shingle edge and miss cut edges were unsightly. If you install each cap at the proper exposure then each piece will have 4 nails holding it in place. If you cut each piece with taper then only 2 nails will secure it.
