Matthew: Great comprehensive video. One thing: There is a tapped hole in the block at the slotted timing tensioner bracket. When desiring the tensioner to be lax, a 6mm bolt can (and should) be inserted into this slot, tension pulled up slack, and the 6mm bolt snugged. Tension is now lax, freeing up that 'left hand' during the belt replacement operation. Hope this helps: as I stated, this was a fine in-depth lesson. Thanks.

12:30 if you wanted to check the timing belt on a car you buy (such as this car) all you would need to do is take off the valve cover. you can see the belt from the other side with out removing all the other stuff, at least to see if it is intact or covered with oil. you can also get a good look for any sludge with the valve cover off.
@mkrp411 жыл бұрын
There is simplified procedure (if you are changing only T-belt) a) match mark old belt to the timed sprockets b) remove old blets and transfer marks to the new belt c) install the new belt using reference marks on the sprockets. This will assure no slack between the pulleys (#1 mistake done while changing t-belt))

Good video overall, shows a lot of what you need to do and watch out for. A couple of errors though. The crankshaft damper (or pulley) is not held on with loctite. It is just high torque (159 ftlbs), and you install it back on with only clean oil on the threads, but not the contact surface of the washer. Another thing I would do if you can, get the proper tool to hold the crankshaft damper (or pulley) from a tool loan program. I got it from Canadian Tire here in Canada. It is a hex tool with a hole in the middle and a tab off to the side to insert a 1/2" drive bar or ratchet that fits into the hex inside the pulley. So much easier. You have to jack the car up to get enough clearance to break the attachment bolt free with another long bar. I used a similar tool like the chain vice grips last time I did it, and I damaged the pulley surface where the power steering pump belt is driven off the crank pulley. I filed the damage and it is still working okay, but I could have easily made the whole damper scrap. I have the original paper copy Honda Accord manual, that's where I got the information. Another thing of note is when you try to pull off the lower plastic cover, the tensioner nut has a rubber seal on it that will prevent the cover coming off easily. You need to carefully remove it by prying it off before the cover will slide over the nut. Best to replace that seal, or you can reuse if it's good condition and you haven't damaged it. Good luck!

Honda never puts thread locker on the crankpulley bolt. In fact, the threads are oiled prior to install at the engine plant. I was the bolt guy at the plant for 20 years!

What did you to to the bolt next to the oil filter, which you have to unscrew in order to drain coolant from the engine block? I have a 2.0i cb3 and tried my best to unscrew it, there is no way. If there was more space I could probably make it. Might be the engineers „fault“, or someone who drained the coolant before me just used too much torque.

Thanks! Your explanation is clear and you take the time to explain things so that I don't get overwhelmed. This is a great overview of a timing belt change. I actually have a 1998 Accord that I want to change the timing belt, but I'm watching additional videos so that I understand the basic concepts. This was really helpful and reinforces the information I learned from other videos. I did wonder, though, why you didn't change out the tensioner bearings since you were right there? Overall, great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it and share your knowledge. There are a lot of us who really appreciate it. -Robert

My cam pulley was also stamped on the rear (im assuming they all are), so with the valve cover off, you can look at the rear of it and get a much more accurate look at the alignment. For me, having the fender in the way makes it hard to get at eye level with the cam gear

I have same car, and in Michigan too. Tips: Buy Haynes manual. Tool to hold crankshaft pulley on eBay. May need to replace a tensioner spring if not causing enough tension. Takes me 8-10 hours to do, and I have directions. Use anti-seize cream on all bolt threads when assembling! Write on paper each step you do. Step 1: Disconnected negative on battery. Step 2: etc. And save the directions for future if you plan to do again. I replace the belts every 6 years or 90,000 miles. Use wire brush around bolts to remove dirt, then use "Liquid Wrench" spray and let soak. Do not break nor strip bolts!

Seriously bro, thank you so much for doing this... You have a great personality for it and you're easy to listen to and, well, you know what I mean... I'm sure you've seen videos where you just can't make it another 10 seconds before you want to turn it off, because some people are just so annoying. Kinda like me, right now? Lol. Doing this for my daughter on her 93 wagon that's in pretty mint condition on the body, Southern California car, really have a find for her here and the motor runs perfect but leaks like a pig out of the front, so I'm figuring it's probably the crank or cam seals or both. got to ask you a question, would you do water pump yada yada yada right now as well? 190,000 miles, I believe the water pump was already done but we can't find out when the guy did it I just don't want to be back in there anytime soon.

7 years later but maybe will help someone else. Have the tensioner bolt loose, then put tension on the crank pulley counter clockwise, till it rotates 3 teeth on the cam sprocket, then tighten the tensioner bolt. Harder to do with the belt covers on, but possible.

I have a question for everyone who completed the timing belt change. The timing belt tensioner (shown at 20:50) has a bolt on the left that holds it in place. I am not sure what to do with this bolt. Should I tighten it really hard so the bolt won’t loosen itself? Or should I just tighten it slightly so the tensioner can still work and adjust itself? I am afraid if I don’t tighten it enough, that it will fall down and rip the timing belt. But if I tighten it too much, I have to remove everything again just to re-tension the belt.

Great video, I do have a question, after tightening the 14mm tensioner nut that holds the two new belt tensioning pullies on, now the tensioners don't move. I put the inner (timingbelt)pully on, then the outer (balance shaft) on, two washers, then the nut. When I first removed the nut I could not break it loose without a cheater on my wrench.So I have tightened the nut but not that tight. Once the 14mm nut is tight should the pullies be able to move? If I keep the nut loose the two pullies will move and the springs will keep them in position. Just seems like I did something wrong.
@goddom8 жыл бұрын
I believe that you push the tension over to put tension on the belt then you tighten the tension bolt. The tensioner should still be able to spin but it won't move - if you know what I mean. Let me know if this doesn't make sense and I can try and clarify some more.

@goddom10 жыл бұрын
Tyler Carson Unfortunately it probably is. Honda's have what is called an "interference engine" - it means if the valve is fully open, and the timing belt breaks, the piston will come up and hit it and bend it. The easiest fix is to find a new head with the valves and swap it out. The pistons will probably be OK, its usually the valves that that messed up. I hope this helps.

Both the engien computer and the transmission computer are bolted onto the backside of that plate. All you need is a 10mm socet and about 15mins. I hope this helps.

Quick question when u adjust the timing an turn the motor too top dead center do u have to adjust balance shaft at all?
@goddom10 жыл бұрын
If you put the engine at top dead center with the balance shaft belt still attached then you lock the balance shaft and everything is aligned properly and no adjustments are needed. If you take the belts off then rotate the crank to top dead center, then you need to adjust the balance shafts. I assume they have timing marks, but I am not sure what they are off the top of my head. I hope this answers your question! If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Good luck!

Eric, do it while the timing belt is still on. That way the cam pulley is lined up. You can do it after the timing belt is off but you then have to turn the cam pulley until the timing marks are properly aligned. Dave, Sorry, I didn't get back to you earlier. I was travelling and then I forgot to reply. Again, very sorry. Chris Blais Sorry for the late reply. I take it the car was running when the bolt came out of the crank pulley? First your timing might be off. @Clearanceman28 жыл бұрын
If it helps anyone, that front corner top water pump bolt stripped out on my car. I tried to tap it but I would have had to pull the engine to do it properly. So it didn't work, the hole stripped. I noticed there is an access hole in the motor mount right above the bolt. So I got a 70mm long 10mm bolt with a thin washer and paid a shop to weld a M10 nut perfectly square to the center of the access hole in the motor mount. Then i put the water pump back on and put the stripped 6mm bolt back in that front top corner hole of the water pump. I ran the 10mm 70mm long bolt and thin washer down tight with locktite in the M10 nut. Once the motor mount is back on the block, the 10mm bolt fits the head of the 6mm bolt perfectly (the head for the 6mm bolt is 10mm). The end of the 10mm bolt pushes on the head of the stripped 6mm bolt in the water pump. That motor mount has three mounting bolts, it's solid mount. So it held the corner of the water pump enough to seal but not to distort. It's been almost two years and it's still fine. The other alternative would have been to drill and heiicoil, but there wasn't really room without lifting the engine up higher. Also, the edge of the repair would have been super close to the seal surface of the gasket on the water pump. I know if I used a nutcert, it would compromise the sealing surface and a helicoil would be very close. A helicoil could still be done, but this is still working. When I need to remove the water pump, I can just take the motor mount off the block and it will free that corner. Leaving the 10mm bolt bolted in the motor mount means it's lined up again to hold that corner in place when I put the motor mount back on. I assume the water pump should be changed every timing belt? Mine's a 95 accord , how often should the timing belt be done, 90,000 right?

what if the timing belt teeth are off and if so how can you tell if they are
@goddom7 жыл бұрын
I am not sure exactly what you are asking. The notches on the cam gear and the crank gear need to be lined up as I described. Sometimes to do that, you have to play with how you install the belt, in which order you go to get it all lined up.

Hi. I have a 1992 Honda Accord EX with the 5 speed manual tranny. I love my car lol and I recently sent it up to my mechanic to get the timing belt replaced . Well shortly after I got it back my car started leaking oil. Not a lot of oil but just a drip or two every few minuets from the bottom of the car, and Im still good on my oil level. I looked all over the engine and couldnt seem to figure out where it was coming from. But the engine looked especially messy around the timing belt cover area. So I took it back up to my mechanic and he said its most likely a cam shaft seal that is leaking and its getting on your timing belt which could wear your timing belt out really fast. The timing belt essentially is catching the oil and flinging it around in there and its then leaking out the bottom of the cover. I am also experiencing my car's coolant temp getting a little hot after Ive driven the car a little. My mechanic said the timing belt could be slipping on the water pump pulley from that oil leak which would be causing the engine to get a little warm. Could you possibly have any ideas on what could be going on there? Is my mechanic on the right track? I know this comment is alot but Im just looking for answers to see how much trouble I might be in lol. Also if my oil is leaking onto my timing belt, am I in any danger of the belt breaking soon? Any serious danger for me here? Thank you!

Mason Biery With this information I think he might be right. Luckily I don't think a cam shaft seal is that difficult to replace in the car. If you have the time and the confidence, I would take off the timing belt cover - at least the top part and see what you find. If there is oil all over the place and its coating the belt then he is probably partially right. With oil leaking on the belt it won't necessarily break it sooner, but it could cause it to slip which can be bad - initially the car will just run poorly but eventually it won't run at all. Secondly oil does cause rubber to become brittle - but that usually takes a while so that wouldn't be my immediate concern. I hope this helps!

Thank You! It does help. I just got the timing belt replaced and its just a bummer that I might have to replace it again. Hopefully not though. If its not that hard to replace the seal than I might try to do it myself. I looked under my car last night just to see how things were looking and I noticed I have oil dripping down from both sides of the engine so Im not sure what all is going on but being able to see what is happening behind that timing belt cover will help alot lol. Also what are your thoughts on putting like an additive in my oil which would find its way to the source of the leak and seal it up? I guess you would call that an oil sealer lol? Thanks again!
@goddom10 жыл бұрын
Mason Biery If you have oil leaking on both sides of the engine then it might just be a valve cover gasket issue. You might want to change that first. Thats easier than a cam seal. As far as an oil additive I say give it a try. I don't think it will hurt. Again, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

If your mechanic thinks the timing belt is slipping on the water pump pulley, the first thing to do is find a new mechanic. As the video above clearly shows, the timing belt and pulleys all have well-defined cogs or teeth on them, and if the engine is running, the belt can not be slipping. The engine is likely leaking oil because the mechanic used a torch to heat the crank bolt so he could get it out. This may have melted the front main crankshaft seal. It seems less likely the camshaft seal would start leaking that bad so quickly. Removing the top section of the timing cover to have a look inside is a good idea. If it's oily inside, the timing belt is not going to last very long. The oil stop-leak additive is probably going to have little or no effect. You'll want to get the oil leak fixed properly if you intend to keep the car.

Mason Biery How did you do on that oil leak? Shame that your engine started leaking from an area that was just serviced. I would look into seeing if you have any claim against the mechanic for not suggesting to you that he check or replace them while doing the timing belt. They're very accessible once you get to that point. If you did check into the camshaft seals yourself, then you already found out that you may need special tools to hold the camshafts still while you loosen their nuts to access their seals. Probably depends on which direction from which you approached them. WilkesJournal is probably right on the crankshaft seal theory if that is where the leak is coming from. Camshaft and crankshaft seals should be checked and probably just replaced when doing a timing belt job along with it's pulleys.

is it easier to do the timing belt on a honda accord or 01 pt cruiser
@goddom7 жыл бұрын
I have done one on a Neon, which in some instances has the same engine, though the mounting location and engine bay configuration may make it easier and harder on the PT Cruiser. So in short, I can't really say, but if the PT cruiser is anything like the Neon, they are about the same level of difficultly.

I have an 88 tercel and the gas pedal stuck to the floor, then the timing belt slid a bit and I shut the car off, but as soon as I restarted it the belt snapped while the engine was at 800 RPM idle, is it done for sure? Should I buy a new belt? Even if it runs on 3 cylinders its only a farm car
@goddom10 жыл бұрын
Shane Blandford-Scherr Since the car wa idling there is a good chance the engine is fine and any damage done will be minor. If any of the valves are messed up it should still run, but may not run well - which you don't seem to care to much about so I would repalce the belt if you have the time and inclination.

Matthew Eddy thanks for the help, I bought a new belt, for 26 bucks! I put it on set the timing and the Tercel fired right up, runs on all 4 just the top end of the motor is loud now, can't kill a Toyota lol, thanks

You mean to lock the balance shaft? If the timing belt moved you just line up the marks on the cam pulley and the crank pulley and you will be fine.

Jason Ford Spray some PB Blaster or WD40 on it. Give it a few minutes and then try using a short breaker bar (if you haven't already and you can get one in there). Other than that I am not sure what else you can try. Definitely don't want to have to pull the whole motor to drill it out...

BryanBeast13 I think I mention every tool I use during the video. Hmmm, not sure I can list them off the top of my head. The basic list would be 12mm medium socket, 19mm socket (crank pulley, 14mm socket, 15mm socket, 10mm socket, 10mm wrench, 12mm wrench, 15mm socket, jack and jack stands, pulley grabbing vice-grip, breaker bar, pry bar, and I think that is all.

What do it mean if the timing keep jumping
@goddom4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, is this in regards to something I said in the video or something I mentioned in a comment?
@pcrb1414 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how the timing would jump repeatedly. the only way I can see that happening is after you do all the work shown in this video, in which case you have reset the timing belt properly, and then it jumped again. I don't see how that is going to happen again unless the belt's teeth were already too worn out to maintain the belt's position. In that case, the belt should have been replaced to ensure that it won't jump. The other possibility is that even if a new belt was installed, it wasn't installed properly. This would be evident when the engine first starts up. It will be a rough start, rough idle, extra noise when it runs and decreased performance and fuel economy.

How can I tell If my timing belt needs to get replaced?
@goddom6 жыл бұрын
It needs to be changed as part of a maintenance interval. For this car I believe its every 80,000 miles. The problem is if the belt fails, you will likely damage the engine. If you know the last time the belt was changed, then you have an idea of when you need it done. If not, you may want to get it changed if you plan to have the car for a while. Sometimes when the belt is changed, if a shop does it, they will put a sticker under the hood showing the date and miles it was changed.

Matthew Eddy Thanks 👍🏿 Okay one more haha..Once I start my car (Honda Accord 92') I put mild pressure on the gas pedal but it seems like im not going anywhere especially when im in 2nd,3rd & 4th gear.
@goddom6 жыл бұрын
Does the RPM increase? If not, then likely you have some play in the throttle cable. You may consider checking the transmission fluid and changing it. If you do, I would get the Honda transmission fluid.
@ItsJusFrequency6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Eddy Yes the RPM does increase but I'm still going slow...but I will check the trans fluid (just in case)
@goddom6 жыл бұрын
Could be that the transmission is in a higher gear, it needs to down shift before your speed increases? Check the fluid and change it. It might help.

For the cam shaft? One option, depending on how much of the bolt is sticking out and you tools - you can weld a nut onto the end and try and remove it that way. You will likely cook the cam shaft seal though. You can replace the cam shaft. Try using an extractor. Or you can drill it out - very carefully! Using an extractor or drilling it out starts the same - try and grind it as level as possible. Use a center punch to put a dimple in the exact center of the bolt. Us a center drill to start drilling, then work up to bigger and bigger drills. You want to remove as much of the bolt as you can but leave enough meat for the extractor to grab it. If the extractor doesn't work, then drill it out a little more,then lightly grind the opening of the hole to expose the threads. Get a tap of the appropriate size (this is really tricky and may not work - I have had luck both ways), you try and start the tap. Takes some patience and feel to remove some of the bolts threads. If it works, you basically chase the threads in the cam and it removes the remains of the bolt. Good luck!
