Thank you so much for making these videos. I just did this repair on my 03 matrix xrs. Wouldn't have been able to do it without them. It took me about one and a half days of steady off and on work. Also a tip, I didn't have to remove the ac compressor, It makes for tight clearance on one of the chain cover bolts but otherwise I would assume it's easier.
@2zzlow4 жыл бұрын
my hands are big and the ac compressor is only held by 3 bolts so its not much for me to remove but thanks for the tip, might help others.

My Dad and I just tackled this project and all appears well--we had an oil leak near the chain tensioner towards the firewall but it appears OK now. Thank you! I wanted to provide context to the last 2 minutes of the video. IMPORTANT: BLEED YOUR COOLANT OR YOUR ENGINE WILL OVERHEAT! The process involves running the motor with the thermostat open and the coolant reservoir elevated in order to bleed air from the system.

Great video, I'm planning on doing this on my Corolla xrs MLK weekend. My friend that's a Toyota tech in Chino told me it's doable without removing the engine but a PITA... He also warned me about the chain tensioner, which I'm still confused about, but will probably understand later. Yesterday I was cleaning around timing chain valve cover and passenger control arm/suspension area and there was serious fucking gunk almost sludge like stuff in that area. Has me worries... But engine oil isn't sludgy when removed from the pan. Got lots to do. Thanks for informational vids!
@2zzlow4 жыл бұрын
Just remember for the Corolla XRS you need to remove the exhaust manifold because the air injection tube that hugs the timing chain cover won’t let you remove it without taking it off. It’s not the worst thing but I thought I’d let you know before you tackle the job. It’s not hard but it’s very time consuming.

I did this on my 06 vibe gt. Tips: no need to remove ac compressor. Use oem gasket on timing chain tensioner or buy gasket from toyota dealer. If you break the nut or round it on ur belt tensioner u can use a c clamp to compress the piston and not have to replace the tensioner.

Instead of hammering the sliding dowels in for the power steering pump I just pressed them in using a ball joint/bushing tool. Bad idea, though, because some black plastic piece came out with it 😅

What torque wrench you have do the low end torque settings? I love my harbor freight icon but it doesn't go down that low. I have their cheaper Pittsburgh inch pound wrench but it's not nearly the wrench that the icon is. It's hard to even make sure you have it set on the correct number. Got my gaskets and such in the mail. Man...I'm amazed at how thin this timing gasket is. I guess I was expecting something a bit more like the engine cover gasket...a little more beef to it.

slowly working up the balls to do this in-car on my 04 matrix xrs....if its even possible? That metal tube from the air pump to the exhaust manifold(?)....is it even possbile with that in the way? I wish the factory shop manual was better on certain procedures. I do have an 03 ECU so I guess I could delete that pump and pipe...what would be involved in that?
@2zzlow4 жыл бұрын
that is the air injection tube. you need to remove it from the exhaust down pipe and from the engine. you can then move it out of the way. you cant just swap ecu, you need to plug up those holes on the back of the engine block.

The torque specs for the engine mount would be the same for a corolla xrs right?
@brinho1094 жыл бұрын
Never mind, they are the same after all. Doing this on a corolla xrs with 96k miles the gasket actually was in good condition (all the gaskets were changed of course). Despite the bad leak (oil covering the power steering pump, most of the timing cover) I think in my case the FIPG from factory on the 4 spots of the engine didn't hold up well.
@2zzlow4 жыл бұрын
yea that also tends to fail and become very brittle over time

When you mention disconnecting the fuel injectors before priming the engine, are you simply turning the engine over with the fuel injectors out?
