Man, this was so helpful. I have the 6 Bay UGreen unit and currently running the default UGreen Software (UGOS) which is fine for me as I am new to NAS. BUT... I have been seeing a lot of the advanced users installing Unraid and TruNas, which, up untill your video I found very intimidating. I'm a visual learner so this was SO helpful. As such I am going to take advantage of the Black Friday special and buy this DXP4800+ today to install TruNAS on. This will allow me to practice learning more about TruNAS as a secondary system. I'm sure I may have questions along the way, so hopefully I can shoot those here form time to time should I run into any problems doing what you did here. Thanks again!!

I've been running Core on my DXP6800 Pro since day 1 off the Kickstarter. Even put 96GB of RAM into it. Not a single problem.

I tried getting into NAS before. Had really bad experiences with it. Every single one I bought had a Linux OS that wouldn't do file permissions correctly and if that wasn't enough every single one died on me due to faulty drives. Instead of NAS I now have a windows 7 machine with a 3770K on a Z77 Sabertooth with 6 drives on it and it has been running flawlessly as a media server for over 3 years with drives that have power on hours of over 7 years.

Sounds like a "you" issue. Linux doesn't have issues with permissions. Also, using Windows 7 as a server. Lol. I sure hope it isn't connected to the internet.

I have never seen anyone have to port forward to get Pi-Hole working unless it's a dd-wrt thing? Updating the IP your router uses for DNS will achieve the same thing. Great video! Gutted we can't get them in the UK. I'm looking for a smaller NAS just for my media.

You can try and use ventoy also so there’s less reformat of the usb and you can even multiboot among isos you copy off the usb

I set up Proxmox on my DXP8800 and it's been great. Running Synology on a VM and it's much, much faster than the slow-ass processor that was in my old Synology DS1821. The CPU in the DXP8800 is quite good for a NAS and makes it an ideal hypervisor/NAS all under 200W package. I even have a GPU installed in the single-slot PCIe slot for a headless gaming VM, too. My only major complaint is that the drive bays are prone to annoying vibrations, so I will have to probably just install some velcro strips or rubber strips on the drive trays as dampeners.

I bought a 128GB nvme drive on amazon (brand Orico for $15) and swapped out the built in drive with the new one so i can go back to ugreen if i want at some point. Thank you for this guide it helped me a lot getting through the software part of the setup. I got the 6 bay on kickstarter and 6 12TB drives. the Ugreen OS leaves a lot to be desired (I know it's very new) so i chose to move to TrueNAS to give it a whirl

i'm about to buy a 4 bay nas in the black friday if i found something interesting, so yes being able to install another OS is super important just in case, i'm not planing to install trunas at first, but if not satisfy i'm going to truenas that i already know thx for the video

does Ugreen provide their OS to download just in case you want to restore to it? What benefit does TrueNAS have over stock (other than being a more popular option)?

Great video. I was wondering if there was a driver or other os that would allow you to access the Nas offline. Rather than the web interface. I want to use one drive for a media drive but my ISP always seems to be flagging movies.

Nice video. I also have the 4800 plus and downloaded Truenas when I received the NAS (Juneish). It’s worked great for me. Only problem I’ve ran into is that CPU temps are way too high for my liking. I contacted their support and they say it’s because “their software makes sure the CPU stays cool”…. I heard people adjusting the fans in the BIOS but any advice on this?

It is used as a DNS server and you add URLs to it for blocking ads and trackers. Try it in docker container, Logan made several videos on it too.
