Cool concept. However it does not appear to be running "bare-bones" on the phone as the video title suggests. Rather it seems to be running in a container on the phone and remoted into via VNC. This would cause performance issues due to the overhead of running virtualized. Lemme know what you think of my synopsis. I only wish to provide food for thought.

It's not emulated though. It runs on the same kernel as android, alongside it. It has poor graphics because it doesn't connect to the screen directly but you have to do it via a "remote desktop connection" to itself... It's also different from ubuntu on a normal desktop or laptop, because your phone doesn't have a x86 architecture... So some software is not available and you'd need to compile it from source code. Honestly it's more like a demo like this, but not really usable as a daily driver, because it's super laggy. You could run a lag free minecraft server on it, or nextcloud or something... But to really use it, you'd need to get the display to work properly, then it would feel normal.

No its like a VM but umbuntu has a tablet and phone distros so I'm like wtf???
@okdoomer6204 жыл бұрын
@@n.lightnin8298 It's like a VM in the sense that you run it parallel to another OS. From a technological point it's different, there is no virtualization going on. It runs directly on the processor, and that's pretty much all you all you get, because ubuntu doesn't support all the other hardware in your phone out of the box, like the screen, all the sensors, sound and so on. Neither does android by the way, the phone manufacturer has to customize it for every single phone.

antavent if you don't know what Ubuntu is, Linux or even Unix then this might not be something you would care to try. Essentially this; Android is built on a Linux kernel, meaning it's a Linux distribution. This tutorial essentially runs another Linux distribution through a VM that is standalone from your phones OS. How ever much storage you grant the VM will be set aside to the VM, like a standalone app. The purpose of doing this is to have a Classic GNU like desktop experience on android through an Ubuntu VM. So no u can't call/text, access the Google play store, many hardware devices probably wouldn't work, performance wouldn't be to great either since it's on a VM. I don't know what the purpose of this is really, besides being fun to try, or maybe as a potential lite desktop like experience from your phone

AR too is picking up, so you can position the projections to your liking. And phones are no sloths these days, they will be able to run a full blown OS in future. Tell us the truth, though, is this basically just Android's version of running a virtual machine, or can this be used to format and install Linux to the phone without any need the run Android on it concurrently? More specifically, I've my eye on a RCA Voyager tablet, and a Puppy Linux distro like this one: distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-tahr/iso/tahrpup64-6.0.5/tahr64-6.0.5.iso. I want to put Puppy on a cheap tablet, but directly and permanently, preferably via 16GB USB 2.0 flash drive (Puppy Linux was installed on that flash drive with Rufus and my desktop PC), and a female USB 2.0-male micro USB adapter. Can something like that be done without too much work or advanced knowledge of mobile devices, or am I as out of my depth as I think I probably am?

okay, On my Galaxy Tab 2 GT-P3113 ...after install, it said "deploy" so I pressed "start" and I get messages like "Starting desktop/dbus ...FATAL: kernel too old" and "ls: /data/local/mnt/etc/rc.local/: No such file or directory" What should I do? I was hoping to get Ubuntu with MATE on this tablet but then this happens and I'm kinda stuck at the moment.

I've installed ubuntu (18.04 and 16.04) on my android (Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 running Pixel Experience Android Pie) but every time after starting the machine, I go to VNC viewer, type localhost:5900 and it says 'the port on which the computer is listening could not be contacted'. Have googled around but cannot find anything I understand that will fix the problem. Can you help?

I’m completely new to raspberry pi, Linux and emulators. I’ve got a Nvidia Shield K1 tablet, can I wipe Android OS off it and install Linux or Ubuntu and run retro-pi and turn it into and emulator to play games? BTW I don’t have a raspberry pi yet. I know I can make an emulator with a raspberry pi but they are a bit expensive right now. The reason I want to wipe android OS is because I rooted it awhile ago, tried to remove the root access and completely ruined it. I’ve tried recovering android with a recovery image but no luck. The only thing you can use the tablet for is web browsing. Can’t download anything that has to do with google play/services Thanks.

I'm sorry, while this looks "cute"?....to me it comes across as being way too much work for limited returns. Not to mention, you stand a chance of straining your eyes! I'll stick to my 24" screen with my desktop, and the 14" screen on my laptops! My phone? Is really just a way to keep in touch when I'm AFK, and the only other thing I want my phone to do?...is MAKE A CALL!

Back in the day, where mobile phones weren't as powerful as they are nowadays, and there was no samsung Dex... Although android 12 is basically a chromebook. I was looking to install a full fledge ubuntu distro on my phone, a pixel 6 pro, but I realize, it wouldn't do much either way!

CheckM8 bootrom exploit. iPhone X down to iPhone 4. Jailbreak any iOS, A11 down to A5, you can dual boot. Run android and linux on iPhone. As of about a week ago. The golden age is back with Verbose.

Misleading... No mention of the GNU operating system, of which Linux is just a component. All you are doing is to install GNU userland on top of the main GNU kernel (which is Linux).

Completely skipped the unlocking instruction, making it a useless video for half the viewers, who will certainly NOT have a straightforward unlocking process.

I hate the title of these type of videos, they make people forget/don't discover than linux is 100% compatible with ARM architecture without virtualization.

What I really want is to be able to install and run windows 10 free on my s8. I know you can get the subscription based windows 10 on it, but I have a copy of Windows 10 I haven’t used yet. Why would I pay a monthly fee for a virtual copy when I have one already?

A bit disappointing that this came from an article on how to install ubuntu on your smart phone, but didn't actually cover actually installing other than a layered syatem akin to a shitty VM evironment that would have little to no valuable functionality, and didn't even cover the process of natively installing ubuntu which is actually possible. So aka, same exact article that 50 other people have written. Kind of annoying people just copy other peoples ideas anymore instead of offering anything of value.

Haven't seen the vid yet. Lemme guess... Download Ubuntu and set a mount point for its image or something, then chroot into it and set up VNC. Finally, VNC into the chrooted dist with an app
