Thank You for this video, easy to follow and funny. I've been working with every major OS from MS all the way back to DOS 4.01 (if I remember correctly) and Lan Manager 2.2c, and yes that includes OS/2 v.1.3, and up to current day including computers running in Azure, and Hyper-V and VMware ESX. Recently started playing around with 86box just for fun, this was a flash from the past! Great stuff, kudos!

Thanks for this, entertaining and educational! I always went for Win95 when I needed Internet support since I never bothered to figure out TCP/IP on 3.1. Now I’ll have to try WFW3.11!

Excellent tutorial, thank you! BTW the 16 MiB RAM limit was for Windows 3.0, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 can definitely utilize more. If you're playing around with RAM-hungry software like the Corel DRAW 5.0 suite, upping the RAM to 32 or 64 MiB really helps 🙂

A trick I learned in awardBIOS to make it faster is to use the IDE HDD auto detection. It will set the drive as “user” so it doesn’t waste time detecting it at boot.

You know what would be really helpful? Host PC requirements. It would make it a lot easier to figure out whether or not one's host will be powerful enough to simulate the necessary hardware.

I can help you with that... You can use any cpu as reference.. compare with PassMark Benchmark.. you only need to compare against single thread performance for CPU... 4 thread only for Voodoo Graphics. A CPU Mark of at Least 1017 works for 8088 to 486.. Pentium 50 maybe. Cyrix is better for 2D and you have a better performance in some escenarios. Office or pixel like games. Beware of Windowed Stretch Games if you stretch it you may have a bottleneck.

A CPU Mark of at least 2094 or more it works for Pentium 166. 1573 at least works for Cyrix 486 100 Mhz the Best for 2D pixel Games or Office... Pentium 90 for 3D Games with Voodoo maybe.. without Voodoo on Desktop is very adjusted surely you may have sounds problems.. Pentium 75 is better.

Using Voodoo you demand lower CPU requierements on Games that use it.. that's why it perfoms better for Voodoo Games. You can read that on the game's manual.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Windows XP are my favorite Windows systems and I have both since Dec 2010 (WfW) and March 2010 (XP) in a Virtualbox VM. I still use XP a few times per week to play the wma copies of my LPs and CDs with WoW and TrueBass effects. WfW 3.11 can still be used with an old browser e.g Opera on the old net (http). I used WfW 3.11 in 1993 on a 486DX66 with a whopping 8MB RAM and a 200MB or 300MB HDD. On that system I started to use the Internet. The internet card was a thin wire coax internet at 10 Mbps.

IIRC, WfW has a few issues that make a fresh install less than the definitive Windows 3 experience. For one thing, it seems to be missing some of the iconic sound effects like tada.wav even!

12:20 I cannot get past this point. Resolution set to 1024x768, 60Hz, true color. The screen is duplicated 4 times with distorted colors that sometimes change out of nowhere, there is no visible cursor (but clicking works) and it is pretty much unusable. Also happens if I don't change any setting, leaving it in standard VGA mode. Running under Linux, so maybe that causes the issue.

Hey, I seem to have my system locked up right after I install the sound blaster 16 drivers, well at least in Windows. When I start Windows it gives me the info message which it says it would install the windows drivers, then the system would just hang up. And after a few minutes it would restart the whole machine, any ideas why it's doing that?

Yeah kind of. When installing the drivers in the ms-dos portion they all went fine, but when restarted to windows it gave me the message saying I have to install the Windows drivers, then my mouse would freeze and the whole system would eventually hung up

Do you guys plan on covering Windows NT 3.51? I'm having trouble with the Realtek RTL8029AS drivers while installing. I don't think its an issue on my side - the files are all there. (Its requesting a setup ini file, which is there - but it doesnt read it)@@86Box

@@Unbreakify videos like these take MONTHS to make and unfortunately Windows NT 3.51 is not in the plans at the moment. worst case scenario, i can install it myself, test the driver and report back here as it may have been an oversight on my part when i found the drivers. but right now i'm not exactly able to put out videos at a regular pace due to real life constraints and other obligations, i apologize.

86box linux flatpak version has a issue that you can't hard reset. So for me installing the graphics drivers is not possible

Okay so I followed the instructions, and when I got to installing the sound driver, after the reboot I get "ERROR 1004: Invalid Base I/O Address." I double and triple-checked all the addresses to make sure things matched (and they were identical to what was shown in the video!) but it seems like it's not being detected? I am on 86Box 4.0.1 (the Flatpak version on Linux) EDIT: I think I figured out a fix. I changed the sound card to Sound Blaster 16 PnP and I was able to get it to work.

Try closing the emulator entirely. If anything, make sure you're on the latest version of 86Box (4.1.1 at the moment).

Which Windows OS do you think is the best DOS multi-tasker? Win3.11 or Win95? By multitasking, I mean having multiple 16-bit DOS programs running at once. I used to do this with OS/2, but I don't want to install OS/2 just to run DOS programs. Windows NT could sorta do this, but it broke a lot of DOS programs (we called the NT Command prompt the "DOS Penalty Box" back in the day).

I'm stuck at the install driver window where it asks you to insert disk 7. I have done that, and typed A:/WFW311 as you instructed, but it just refreshes the install window.

Only the files RTL8029.386 and PCIND.DOS should come from A:\WFW311 on the driver disk. All other requested files should come from A:\ on disks 7/8 as asked by the program.

I'm confused about one step. You use an installer to install a CD-ROM driver, to immediately replace it with another. What's the point of running that installer when you're not going to use the driver it installs?

The installer does several things for you, like update the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and install several other utilities. We are just switching the driver out because the one included with the installer needlessly uses more resources than VIDE-CDD.
