Hi, great video, I've a 10x8' shed and considering using the bubble insulation on the walls and ceiling, I see you've fastened it straight to the inside of the cladding, does it not not need an air gap, I had the shed wrapped in vapour barrier before cladding. What's your thoughts. Thanks.

Cheers! I would say yes it would be preferred if there was a gap although I didn't have one and it hasn't caused any issues for my shed so far. I wanted to get the most useable space from between the studs to hang up tools. It shouldn't make much difference with a wooden structure.
@jcorchards
@jcorchards 2 күн бұрын
Yes, same here I wanted to use the space between the studs, I have seen people put small strips of timbers to the studs say like 20mm depth, to then fasten any insulation to which creates the gap, but not sure if it's worth the extra time/work/expense. Good to hear yours doesn't have any issues. Thanks

Its pretty chilly at times in winter in there lol
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what your exact set up is for the building although it seems to be working fine for me at the moment. The shed has been up 3 years now with no damp or mould so far. Using insulation such as bubble wrap or polystyrene on the ceiling should help to lower the surface temperature of the ceiling therefore preventing dew from forming on the surface. If a ceiling is cold to the touch, it can form dew when the warm air rises up and hits it.

Hi Phill, it’s so good to find your this video, as I’m wondering 💭 how can I insulate my Shed/Workshop/Man-Cave. My Shed is same as yours (16’x8’) with concrete floor and Apex Roof. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! How many of these Rolls you had to get for your Workshop/Shed/Man-cave? What exactly you put inside the ceiling before you stick those Silver Bubble Wraps/Insulation? It would cost me £1,400 if those guys are building my Shed, which is way over my budget. It will be hard because I’m disabled, but I’ve to do it myself if I’ve to save that kind of money ££££. Just been in my shed for the 1st time in a week to find frost on the inside roof how can I fix the problem
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects Жыл бұрын
The frost on the inside of the roof may be caused by warm air rising through the floor during the evening and then condensing on the cold surface of the roof. I would start by adding sheets of polystyrene insulation to the roof sticking them in with an instant grab adhesive. This should help to insulate the roof and reduce the level of warm air condensing onto it. Also I would suggest adding an air vent up near the roof to allow warm air to escape out of the building at night when it rises up.

You could use a solvent free grab adhesive. Or you could buy the version of aluminium insulation which is designed for vans to dampen sound. This has it's own adhesive backing. You can find it online.

I bought this foil and have had a sensor going for 4-5 days now showing before/after being basically the same. I've not boarded over yet, but everything I've found has said that double foil bubble wrap is a "scam", certainly the data logger is showing it's having basically no effect. Did you go on to also add celotex to your workshop? How's it holding up now?
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 3 жыл бұрын
I have not used celotex. I wouldn't say that the bubble wrap is one of the best solutions but it may be the cheapest. I do not agree that it is a scam. It has its uses and for me it has made a difference. It does depend on your set up also.

@@PhillWyattProjects My setup is a 2x2m shed with shipclap cladding and 30mm framework on the inside. I wanted to insulate it and this video was one of the ones that took me in the direction of the double foil bubble wrap. I did expect some difference, but the charts are basically the same unfortunately. There are some small gaps in the door where it's warped and in the single-gazed window, but not massively. I think if I had the chance to do it again, and had the budget I'd get the 25mm foil-backed PU/PIR - but it would take 2x 35GBP sheets per side (3 sides plus roof, plus doors), and the same again on the roof, so works out a lot more expensive. Have you noticed that your setup is insulating and retaining heat?
@ciaranciaran100
@ciaranciaran100 2 жыл бұрын
Foil helps to reflect infra red ie radiant heat. Double foil bubble wrap has very little conventional insulation for convected heat, which is needed. You need thicker insulation for that, 25mm solid insulation or glass wool, but make sure the glass wool is protected from the condensation which will form on the cold wall behind it, as when insulation gets wet it loses its insulation value. You need a vapour barrier which can be as simple as plastic sheeting on inside of insulation layer and tape it at all joins to prevent as far as possible the humid air getting in to condense on the cold face. Ordinary packaging bubble wrap could provide some insulation very cheaply, say 2 layers with the bubbles facing each other.

The bubble wrap is fairly good but I think because I wrapped it with the membrane and sealed up all the seems with aluminium tape this really boosted it's effectiveness because it made the shed draft proof. Draft is a big problem in winter so that's the first thing to eradicate.

Hi Phil, thanks for the video. I need to insulate my shed/workshop and I'm going to buy some Superfoil. In some of your video footage, it looks as though the insulation on the walls has been fastened but without using the foil tape too. That's actually what I was planning on doing and just wanted to check if I really need to buy the tape too? I would eventually fit plywood over the top. Cheers, Andy.
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 2 жыл бұрын
That's correct Andy I haven't used it to apply the foil bubble wrap. The reason being that the shed already has a breathable membrane which has been sealed with aluminium tape. So I don't see a need to seal it again. If your shed doesn't have a breathable membrane already on it, then it might be worth using it. You can pick up a roll of aluminium tape cheaply online and they go quite far. Useful stuff.

I prefer to put it under the floor. If you do you just need to make sure rain can't get to it so that it doesn't act like a giant rain catcher. I am having problems with moisture in the shed causing mold and condensation on the items being stored (not the shed itself). I haven't done anything to the shed as yet, but I need to tackle this issue! I'm not sure what I need to do though... @PhillWyattProjects

Thanks👍 I would suggest providing adequate ventilation to allow the rising warm air in the evenings to escape. Add some vents around head height. If your floor is not sealed underneath with say a layer of damp course then you will always have warm air rising up through the floor. It depends, do you have ventilation in your shed? Do you have any leaks? and what kind of base is your shed on?

@@PhillWyattProjects I don't have any ventilation, it's pretty sealed, but Im sure I have some air leakage if that's what your referring to, and it's sitting on a few cinder blocks, so it's not touching the geound

@@PhillWyattProjects I did double layer of insulation and it seemed to fix the issue. One layer of the r13 and on top of that added a half inch foam board

Does this keep the temperature down in the summer?
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it does help to control the temperate although the main factor in summer is the amount of Windows. I have many windows that creates a green house effect. If you have less windows then it is much more effective at deflecting the heat from the sun.

I've got a 20ft x 12ft timber workshop...done loads to it ....getting mould problems and cannot use it or go in there now. I've had several ppl out who claimed they could sort it or find the cause ...absolute jokers. Its been a money pit and just taken away the excitement...its now the brain of my life ... and from what I've understood and what you've basically confirmed is a condensation problem... HELP 😬😩 Where are you in the country??

Hi I'm in the Midlands. Do you have a damp course under your floor or vapour barrier or any kind of insulation? Also, have you tried installing a vent?

@@PhillWyattProjects I'm in Reading ... want to go through what I've done and how i built mine then maybe you can advise. Already seen a couple of things on your videos i need to do. I built the base ....scalpings whacked down , rebar etc ..7-8" of concrete BUT forgot DPM 🙈 ...theres a 1 brick later of engineering bricks around the circumference of the workshop which were painted with 2 coarse of bitumen and before sitting the panels on the put a DPM covering the bricks even though they had 2 coats of bitumen. ...had to seal the floor with concrete dustproofer bc the concrete company were a joke so it was a bit porous ( created a fair bit of dust ) ... roof was 12mm structural ply sealed between each panel with GB pro silicone sealant as were each of the structural panels. On top of the 12mm structural ply i put a fair bit of bitumen then laid polyester lined felt ( overlapping by 5" and plenty of bitumen between the overlaps....then a metal box profile roof was put on .... Internal walls had a DP membrane put on from the company I bought the workshop from but i preserved the outside and back of the panels with Premier Q wood stain / preserve...it did coat a lot of the panel DP membrane but I've been told should affect it?? Walls inside were then insulated with 50mm polystyrene sheets leaving approximately 15-20mm between the outside cladding and foam insulation then boarded inside with 6mm structural ply. No vents were added at this time. That winter whole workshop inside was black mould ..under ceiling and walls ....added vents now andits just on the ceiling boards ( not the 12mm structural ply roof as I put a ceiling up with a void between the 2 if that makes sense? ..there are 2 x 76mm round vents either end of the workshop to air the roof space void . ) ...so basically only thing on the floor concrete is the floor dustproofer sealant which isn't damp proof .. just stops dust kicking up. I do have the bubble foil coated insulation under the perlings just under the 6mm ply ceiling boards ... doing my head mate. I'm on hoarders next week ..,you should see the bungalow 🤪😂 lawnmower ..tools everything

@@martynj-c4965 If it still getting cold and damp with the air in the winter then it will always accumulate mould...maybe put one of those greenhouse bar heaters on a thermostat on about 5 degrees to take the chill out the air....if its insulated well enough. Refit the floor with some barrier underneath too and exclude all draughts.
