Fun seeing the BTS and your talking about the creator process. You don't talk like "our videographers are shooting people to look amazing", you're speaking like "our DP crafted the light to bring the story out of our talent". Essentially the same action, but way more powerful language. I love it.

For sure. The language creates meaning, and the meaning creates or erases value. Subtle word changes can make a world of a difference. Appreciate you picking up on that.

These tips and more I've learned from you all over the years create results, such as my client recently saying, "I feel like I'm talking to a friend during this interview." The biggest thing I've learned throughout interviewing is that it's an opportunity to be a listener. Think about it, most of our daily conversations are comments back and back forth, not questions asking to seek understanding. The conversation I have during the interview is partly why I create docs, to connect with others.

Loved this content, Patrick. This is the tool I'm most curious about mastering. Getting that more profound connection to reach for deeper emotions. The way you stop Romero from quick answering and getting to grab more emotional info before responding is impressive.

Thank you Tiago. It sure does take time to get really comfortable with the craft of interviewing and gaining that instinct to know when are where you can do deeper and when it’s best to move on and circle back later. Glad to hear this was helpful for you!

Patrick, this was a fabulous clip with some beautiful insight. 🙏🙏I have a question. When you interview someone, and they let down their guard, how do you manage how the end content? I'm sure there are times when an interviewee has opened up, and yet it either doesn't feel fitting to share, or the interviewee doesn't want it shared. I suppose that also comes down to great empathy and connection with the person.

Great question. What we touched on in the end of the film is key here - when you are truly there with them and it doesn't feel like there is another agenda, it goes a long way in having their support to then share and parts of their story forward. Another thing that is key is to show appreciation when you are done - so I will always take the time to privately thank them for their vulnerability, explain why that matters to strong storytelling, and ladder back to the larger why - the impact we are all trying to have with the story we are telling. Taking this time to ensure they know that what they shared is in sake of something larger goes a long way in having their full support to make the film how you best see fit. Hope that helps!

I really value what your team is sharing here. As a doc/corporate dp in Orlando I’m frequently on these gigs where the technical abilities aren’t enough. You’re there to get the emotion. I follow you guys on ig and now a new subscriber here as well. Lmk if you have a need for interview coverage in central Fl. 🤙🏻

I'm currently working on a doc and there will be celebrities in the film being interviewed - no one A list, but celebrity enough to go through their representation. I'm curious in this situation for your doc, did you pay these celebrities? I know you mentioned in the video that you had Arnold and Khaled for 10 mins - is that because that's what the budget could afford of their time? Is that because they gave you 10 mins for free and anything longer they'd charge for? A few local filmmakers say they never pay for interviews due to journalistic integrity, but if that celebrity is key to your story, how do you navigate that? Thanks! Love this video and all the content.

Great great insight, but seriously not a fan of the seesaw BTS camera, sorry! :D Loved the way DJ Khaled just opened up & became bright when you said about the underlying story of people being told No. He was like, "SQUIRREL!".
