Hi there. My baby is 12 months and I have been trying to get him to use open cup for months now but he won’t hold it himself. I didn’t do the hands over hands thing. Now he’s quite sensitive to being told what to do. How do you recommend I guide an older baby to holding a cup on his own?

My 2.5 year old son has been using a sippy cup, any tips to transition them to an open cup?

Lots of exposure and patience!! Practicing with a small cup and a little water. Expect spills but the more you give them the opportunity the faster they’ll learn!

I have that same straw cup, my son actually sips from it better than the traditional sippie cup

My daughter transitioned to a soft spout sippy cup around 8 months. When should we transition from a soft spout to a straw/ open cup? She's now 11 months old

Now's a perfect time to practice with both!

@@pedsdoctalk hey doc,I did leave a msg about topics I intended in days ago in the community section. Thx again. I thought about writing u a private msg, but didn’t find where …. I will have problem to ask, and if you’re available, I can talk to u online. My son drinks formula and has defecated 2-3 times since he was born. Recently, his stool is liquid n thin. The stool bacterial indicators are normal and negative. Now, the doctor says that if he needs to have a non thin stool, replace the normal formula he drinks with diarrhea milk powder (Nestle deep hydrolyzed milk powder), but his curve is normal. His height has been 50% and his weight is 75%. So if you’re available can we talk online

My 11 month old has been given both sippy cups and straw cups daily since 6 months old and he STILL csnnot figure either out😭 what am i doing wrong?? He knkws hiw to put both in his both but wont drink from them, with straws he likes to keep his mouth wide open and wont close it😂

Maybe try an open cup if you haven't already! Sometimes babies can figure those out faster than straw. But otherwise keep giving him plenty of opportunities to learn and use the tips in the video. Some babies take a little longer than others to master the skill but he will get there!!

Thank you because I’m becoming very stressed out trying to get my son to drink out of this sippy cup

My Mom told me "I knew it was way past time to give you a cup when you walked over to me and asked for drinks for you and your brother, holding out your bottles!" Don't be too hard on yourself, my Mom was pretty close to a super hero, but having two of us very close together must have been a bit overwhelming at times! She had us at 21 and 22.

If baby drinks already from open cup then why is the straw cup necessary?
@pedsdoctalk Жыл бұрын
You can do one or the other! Some parents prefer their kids to be able to drink from a straw so they can use a lidded cup in environments where spills are more problematic but up to you! If baby is doing great from an open cup you can definitely continue that

Does drinking through a straw cause gas?
@pedsdoctalk Жыл бұрын
No it shouldn’t, gas is typically caused by excessive swallowed air (and many other factors) but using a straw shouldn’t result in excessive air intake
