I am from South of India and we are usually mocked in India as we mostly have long names But after watching this video I understand that most of us have long names if we follow traditional methods. Here we actually start with our Guardian God's name or Family Diety name followed by Village Deity name, then we add name of our Village, ancestral place or name of ancestral house if it's prestigious enough that people around know it. Followed by ancestral lineage and parents starting usually with mother's name as we follow maternal lineage and then finally Our Name. So our actual name comes last or its family name that follows.

I've been in classes/groups with people from all parts of the world as they've developed their pepeha and have said it for the first time and many find it very emotional, it's a special thing to witness. It can be a big journey for people to figure out where they feel they connect and come from if they haven't done it before or thought that way before.

That would be hard for us name challenged individuals to remember everybody's mountain and body of water , meeting place and family members as well as their own title when exchanging introductions .. It definitely does make you think about where you came from though . When she asked about my meeting place , the first thing that popped to mind was my email lol .

Her Mountain is representative as her father, and her River representative of her mother?
@Ant101inia
@Ant101inia 5 ай бұрын
Kia ora! Her pepeha (introduction) outlines where she is from and who she is. Her mountain and river are geographical landmarks from the land of her iwi and people not necessarily representative of her whānau / family. When she says “who is your mountain / river” she doesn’t mean they are people, Māori see these things as living beings that bring protection and life to the people 😊

Subject : Exciting collaboration opportunity for your youtube video Dear [ TEDxTALK channel owner ], I am a huge fan of your content and have been inspired by your videos. I have a proposal that i believe could be mutually beneficial. I’d like to dub your videos into another language and upload them to reach a wider audience. I am willing to take care of all the work involved, including translation and dubbing . In return, I’m suggesting a 50 - 50 revenue share for our collaboration. This partnership could potentially open up new horizons for your content and help it recreate with a global audience . I’m confident that together , we can achieve great results. If this idea intrigues you, please let me know , and we can discuss the details further . I’m excited about the prospect of working together and amplifying the reach your fantastic videos. Looking forward to your response. Best Regards, Ankush

mi mountain is the garden of eden! My rivers are Pishon, Gihon, Hiddekel (Tigris), and Phrath (Euphrates). My ancestral canoe is Noah's ARK. My tribe are the blind hopeless sinners that found faith in Jesus Christ and became sons of GOD! My gathering place is with any fellow believers in Jesus. My great grandfather is ADAM, WHO MADE SOME TERRIBLE mistakes! He was the cheif of thw WHOLE planet. But he gave it up. I am a dirt bag saved by Gods grace. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! Oh, and btw, I was born on some dirt called New Zealand.

Māori is one of the official languages of New Zealand. The pepeha is a cultural introduction of who you are and where you’re from. She said it in English right after. I don’t see why that’s a problem?
