This is probably this clearest way I've seen to J a window. I'm in the middle of a small addition and struggled with the first one today (Never done it before). I might just take that small bit of siding and J down and have a do-over tomorrow. Thanks for the tutorial.

I appreciate you watching the video. Remember to leave a little space between the siding and the j channel when you put it back to allow for expansion and contraction. Best of luck! Let me know if you need anymore tips.

I see no tar paper anywhere on those walls, and some evidence of rot. Sorry bud, that is standard building code anywhere in North America. Also, flashing on top of windows. If the face of the window is 60" wide and the face of the J-channel is 1" then the top and bottom J-channels are 62" long. Done. Once the flashing is on, measure from the top of the (sloped) flashing to the bottom of the face of the J-channel and add 1" (I usually add 1 1/8" just for any slight discrepancy which you can trim off later). Saves you having to mark and cut while you're standing on a ladder. Other than that you're doing fine. Greetings from the Siding Guru in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Where it rains a lot. After 1,700 projects and counting, with no leaks, but repairing a whole lot of other companies crappy work I wrote the book on successful waterproof siding installation.

Peter Helmus dying for some ass hickeys 🤣 tar paper? What year was the article that you read written? You put ice & water on walls? 😂 I use Tyvek like the rest of North America 🤷♂️ where do you ... Peter ... apply flashing to a window or door with brick mold or pre - attached j channel aside from a flex wrapped sill? Since it IS building code ... where do you apply the "tar paper" on a building with zip sheathing?I didn't see nail fins on that window, where should he have flashed it? This man gave a good demonstration on exactly what the video was titled and you needed to try jacking some of that shine for yourself. Jump on his case when he changes the title of the video to "How to weather seal your exteriors". Until then go make your own fuckin video "expert" 🙄

Thank you for this video. May I ask you how much the window has to stick out of the ODSB board to allow proper matching with the J-channel? Also what nails I should use for the siding installation on the 1/2-inch ODSB wall? The siding nails in Home Depot are 2-1/2 and 2 1/4 inches loos too long for me.

You should probably wrap the windows first, bending a nail flange on your metal opposed to just bending metal and just sliding it in between the j-channel. That's one of the biggest no-no's in siding. You're guaranteed to end up with rotting wood trim. Or you can go the other route...try your best and caulk the rest lol.

@@haroldcrandall3445 Did you not see the water stains on the lower corners of the window plywood! Install the underlayment first then the j-channel. Also install the first j under the window then the siding then the sides j so that the lower j edge is over the lap joint of siding so the water won't channel behind the siding.
@haroldcrandall34453 жыл бұрын
I did see the water spot which was a problem with the original siding. I can't force anyone to put house wrap on. Was a subcontractor on that job. The siding also have weep holes on the panels which is designed to let water escape if for any reason did happen. I always do the bottom first then the sides then the top.
