Thanks! I was trying to combine 2 duplicated models and could not get it to work, this helped me very much. Good video

Its really sad that the boolean modifiers often break when you have complicated mesh.

Thanks, thats the way to do it, and not as others says it "use Ctrl + J"

I realize I'm relatively skill-less at this, but it's bizarre how some these functions effect seemingly simple meshes. I spent the better part of a day subtracting a cylinder shape from and extruded circle, and then couldn't bevel the inner edges. Couldn't make new faces between part of the shape. Just getting command of joining/separating simple shapes as easily as I used to do with CorelDraw is going to seem like a triumph.

honestly exactly what i want to do.. merge two cylinders and then bevel/fillet where they join... did you find out how to do this in the end? cheers Ben

@@benbutcher1595 It's been a couple months and I haven't touched the editor in a few weeks. I think I was working on modeling a metal kingpin that has a very complex shape to it, and uh...I think what I was doing was trying to skip ahead in my understanding and just join things that ought not to be joined yet. This isn't going to be helpful, but I think it really was just familiarizing myself with the way Blender's shape tools operate. Basically doing a bunch of tests in a separate file, playing with settings, playing with everything. And only when I had farted around enough, then go back, and look at the thing I had been trying to model and rework it. In fact, although I can't think of, now, specifically what I was modeling at the time...I believe I had to start over, because I realized a better method for achieving the thing I was banging my head against a brick wall over. Sorry if that's just anecdote and no help.

I'll be honest. A lot of my early problems were not being super careful when I do an extrusion and sometimes I'll work by faces, double click a thing. And then create some weird duplicate set of vertices and edges. Then try to do a bevel and can't figure out why it looks weird. Sometimes, you have to go into X-ray mode, and then spot at a real close level double vertices where the edges are crossing or something like that and then delete them individually. Then re-do like edges and faces how they are supposed to be. Real meticulous, aggravating stuff. Also, one thing I wish I had learned a lot sooner was before I do anything like a bevel or a modifier on a shape, make sure to "Apply All Transforms". Now someone better than me can explain why, but basically...after farting around a lot, you can build up a series of changes to your mesh that for some reason is showing as active in your 3D view but somehow is not technically set, and for which operations are not possible. I really wish I had seen this question earlier when I was super active on my project. But, anyway...the key thing is remember "Apply All Transforms" are a thing that can be important and I'd look that up. Best of luck with your learning and editing.

so i was making models for roblox studio (as a beginner and a complete newbie) and I was wondering why the parts kept falling off. The roblox studio union wont work cuz it wont combine mesh parts. I used ctrl + J first. But when I made another model which used boolean difference and I hid some parts, since I hid some parts it wont ctrl + J. I used boolean union and it worked thanks

Yeah... Technically you did. But usually when you want to do it you want to retain as much original topology as possible while keeping the seam as clean as possible.

Add a new Plane mesh to your project, go to edit mode and press the E key, this will allow you to extrude the plane to add a slight thickness to it. Head back to object mode, and move the Plane mesh you added into the object/the area you would like to cut. Select the object you want to cut now, add a Boolean modifier to it, and choose the plane as the object you're using to cut the Boolean. Hit apply, delete the plane. Now go to Edit mode, press A to select all in the mesh you've just cut, and press the P key. A context menu will pop up, choose "By Loose Parts". This will separate the two objects you just cut, profit!

So what if the monkey head does go inside of it and fails to merge? I am trying to merge Rings (Think the Olympics Logo) and they wont mesh together they just place inside of each other. They DO NOT do like this video and become one solid object.
